I got Zelda last week as well. Unfortunately the game I bought a DS for will have to wait, I'm hooked on Puzzle Quest.

ZaphodVM 12-29-07 09:12 AM

I got a DS Lite, Mario Kart and Zelda PH for chirstmas, I am one happy bunny.

I have a $10.00 Gift Card that I have to use at Toy's R Us by December 31st. I got it during a promotion. At any rate, I'm looking to add a game to my very small DS Lite collection.

I'm thinking about Ultimate Mortal Kombat. I haven't played a Mortal Kombat game since the Super NES days. I also read that the first Sonic Rush game released back in 2005 is good. Then, there are puzzle games. I'm looking for something that will make my total no more than $20.00, after the $10.00 Gift Card. I only have two games (which I play a great deal of), which are Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. Any suggestions on what games to get? Anyone played/own Ultimate Mortal Kombat? Is it worth picking up? Or, should I go with Sonic Rush, or something else entirely? I really would like some input.

I saw the post by Michael Corvin earlier in the thread (did a search), but I thought I'd ask this since it's been a few months and more people have likely played the game by now.

What do more of you guys think of Duck Amuck? I'm looking for a new DS game, and this one really interests me.

If you are interested in puzzle games at all i can't recommend Puzzle Quest enough.

It's a fun diversion. I wouldn't pay more than $10-$15 for it.

Its ok. I would pass on picking it up. The controls aren't ideal for on the ds, they don't really flow. The commands don't change in the top window if you remap them. For some odd reason they show the button name ie "a" instead of the action ie "LP" you know for light punch. Not a problem if you don't remap the moves, but I did so it is a problem for me.

On the plus side it looks good and doesn't seem to be missing anything. I have't played online yet so have no idea how that is.

If you want a fighting game Bleach is better choice. Ultimate Jump Superstars would be even better but you'd have to import it and use guide since it is in japanese.

The premise was interesting, and I really liked the new lines of dialog written for Daffy that are more current with the times and about video gaming, in general. Interacting with Daffy is fun for a while, but the minigames are droll and after an hour or two, you just don't care enough to keep playing and finding new ways to piss Daffy off.

Here's a full review that I wrote a few weeks before starting my tenure here:

“Thanks for the sour persimmons, cousin.”

Duck Amuck remains as one of the funniest animated shorts I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never heard of it or are scratching your head trying to remember it, Duck Amuck was a Looney Tunes short that featured Daffy Duck getting messed with by an unknown animator who made Daffy’s life miserable for about 6 minutes. Daffy eventually has enough and demands at the end to know who is responsible for his antics after blowing his top several times. Watching Daffy’s reaction to his abuse is as funny now as it was when the short debuted back in the 1950s.

Now, over 50 years later, Nintendo DS owners are given the chance to be that animator and torture Daffy all over again, courtesy of Warner Brothers Interactive. Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck allows players to interact with Daffy, with the ultimate goal of angering Daffy so much that the game ends. The game is based on the animated short, but combines it with new ways to tick off Daffy that Chuck Jones might not have ever thought of. The game looks fantastic, and Daffy has got a fair amount of speech in the game; unfortunately, the game’s flaws cancel out the gorgeous aesthetics and leave the game smack dab in the middle of mediocrity.

In order to piss Daffy off, there are a few things you can do. You can job at him with your stylus until he gets mad. You can drag your stylus across certain portions of the white background to rip it, causing Daffy to try to tape it up. You can even try closing the DS while turned on for a hilarious reaction from Daffy. Once angered, and depending on what actions you took to make him mad, Duck Amuck proceeds to a minigame sequence.

The minigames can be fun, but the game makes a grave error in that it assumes that players know what to do. There aren’t any pre-game instructions or objectives; Duck Amuck basically says, “Here you go. Have at it.” For some of the minigames, this works just fine because the objectives are obvious. For others, though, it takes some trial and error to figure them out. Thankfully, there’s no way to “die”, per se. Successful completion of these minigames serves to fuel a thermometer, which is basically Daffy’s anger meter. Once that’s full, Daffy freaks out and the game ends.

The good news is that the minigames are rather varied and are fine to play, once they’re figured out. One sequence has you dealing cards to the appropriate player as Daffy becomes a sheriff in the Wild West. Another sequence has you trying to drop TNT on Daffy as he skis across a winter wonderland. Robin Hood Daffy and Duck Dodgers also make appearances in the game, which will please fans. There are also minigames to be unlocked throughout the game, which can be seen by collecting character coins and fulfilling certain requirements.

Perhaps the biggest attraction of Duck Amuck is the interaction between the player and Daffy. Daffy’s got brand new dialog that brings him into the 21st century, as he waxes about graphics engines and algorithms and mixes that in with classic lines from the original cartoon, delivered masterfully by the new voice of Daffy Duck, Joe Alaskey. Alaskey’s interpretation of Daffy’s voice is eerily similar to Mel Blanc’s famous voiceover work, and that’s certainly a good thing. Seeing Daffy get mad and hearing him call you names is amusing. The music is exactly what you’d expect from a game of this ilk, although it is interesting that the traditional Looney Tunes jingle is absent.

The presentation is as good as it gets for a Looney Tunes game, and especially in the DS. WayForward Technologies does a great job of combining full-motion video (FMV) sequences with very pretty minigames visuals that closely resemble the original cartoons that the game and characters are based on. Duck Amuck is as close to an interactive Looney Tunes short that has ever been seen. Daffy’s expressions are priceless, whether you poke him, blow him up, or run him around.

As good as Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck looks and sounds, the gameplay becomes tiresome quickly. It’s too easy to run through the game by completely filling Daffy’s anger meter; in fact, it’s possible to do it more than twice in less than an hour. Unfortunately, aside from unlocking more minigames, Daffy doesn’t have an infinite number of reactions and repetition occurs way too soon for a fully-priced video game. Duck Amuck winds up becoming a conversation piece to show off to friends and get a laugh here and there. There’s just not enough depth here, and that ends up costing the game any replay value.

Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck pays homage to its base material and can be a fun diversion… for a budget price. Daffy Duck in the 21st century is as funny as he was in the beginning, and that’s a tribute to WayForward’s attention to detail, the original cartoon’s script, and Joe Alaskey’s stellar voice work. Unfortunately, the underlying game just doesn’t have enough substance to warrant a full-price purchase. Pass on this one until the inevitable price drop occurs.

Wondering what everyone is using for game storage. Between me and my gf, we have around 30+ games.

Currently I'm using one of the Penguin United cases which is ideal for 24games, but before I order another one, I'm curious if there is already something out that could hold more or have additional storage added as the collection grows.

why would you remap the controls for MK? (LP= low punch, not light punch)

the online play is great. no slowdown except when a TON is going on.

ive had the DS since it came out (and i also upgraded to DS lite)- so far, Ultimate Mortal Kombat has got the most Replayability. pick it uP!

MadonnasManOne 12-30-07 05:01 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to go to Toy's R Us, tomorrow, so, I am still open to suggestions. So far, it looks like I may end up going for UMK or JQ.

Guess not. Bummer.

anyone get Contra 4 how is it, the original game in it?

The Original and Super C and be unlocked in challenge mode.

The game is really good and really, really hard. Easy is not bad, but they leave out the last two levels which really need to be experienced. Some of the best looking boss sprites I have seen.

It is a great game, but again it is very hard so be in old school gaming mode when you play it.

MadonnasManOne 12-31-07 04:43 PM

Well, as usual, Toy's R Us didn't have ANY of the titles in stock that I was considering. Big surprise. In fact, they said they hadn't even got Ultimate Mortal Kombat, yet. Strange. Anyway, I ended up buying Geometry Wars: Galaxies. I've never actually played any version of the game, but, I've seen people here talking about it, and I've heard good things about it. Did I make a good choice? It was $22.99, after the $10.00 Gift Card. I may not open it, and hold it until Ultimate Mortal Kombat comes in. However, if it is a game that several people recommend, I'll keep it. So, give me your opinions. Thanks!

If you enjoy shooting games where things get more and more intense, it doesn't get much better than Geometry Wars.

Panda Phil 01-03-08 11:05 AM

Picked up Geometry Wars this morning based on your comments. Played it for a few minutes on the bus ride home and yep, its definately intense. I was a bit worried at first that it was some sort of ASTEROIDS clone. They do deserve props for doing such a good job simulating an old school Vector-Graphics display.

Despite some serious frame rate issues at times, the DS version of Geometry Wars Galaxies is pretty damned good. It's a great game for a quick run-and-gun session and the allure of trying to eclipse your best scoring efforts will keep you coming back long after you've unlocked everything.

I'll have the full reviews up tomorrow for both the DS and Wii versions of this game.

Maybe you can help me. My wife loves puzzle games and I've heard nothing but
praise for this title, problem is it seems color-based from the pics I've seen and
she has achromatopsia (complete color blindness). Is this the case, and if so,
does the DS version have an option whereby she can change the shapes or add
big enough markings to the jewels (the DS screen is small to begin with) so that
she can differentiate them? It looks like there are markings on them already that
carry between different colored jewels so I assume the latter isn't possible, but
was hoping. Thanks for any help.

Ok, i turned the game on this morning to check it out. I couldn't find any options to lay bigger symbols or increase the size of the gems. The gems do have different symbols on each color, but i'm not sure how easy it is to distinguish between the symbols. They look different, but as you said, the DS screen is small.

If you have an Xbox 360, the game is also available in the Live Arcade, and therefore could be played on a larger screen. It is also a PSP title.

Personally i prefer the DS version (even though it is a smaller screen) for the stylus control. I would look at it yourself though and see what you think of the symbols. Not being colorblind i never think of stuff like that and would hate to say it would work and then you be disappointed.

I picked up the DS version, but the first thing I did was turn off the stylus control. Either my hands are shaky or I wasn't making quite the precise movement sometimes (not straight down or whatnot), and I'd end up getting illegal moves and losing 5 health when I should've been chaining together some gems to drop down and trigger some skulls for massive damage! Grrr!

Well you can do the drag technique, or just two taps. Tap one stone, then tap the second legal stone and they switch. :)

Thanks for checking and the suggestion of trying it on the 360. I forget the
name, but there was a puzzle game on the PS that allowed for flags from
different countries to be used as a different skin on the jewels, was hoping
there may have been something maybe not as extreme as that, but enough
so that it would change their appearance to where she could tell them apart.
I also wasn't sure if the DS may have had an extra option such as this due to
the size of the screen.

Thanks again.

I've been playing this for about two weeks and can't imagine playing it without the stylus. So convenient, quick and easy. Like miyu said there are two methods, I use the 'two tap' method and it works flawlessly. Whenever I try the 'drag' method is when it fucks up.

And a fine review it is too. I haven't noticed any framerate problems myself. But maybe thats because I'm too busy fending off swarms of baddies to notice. :) It really is a nice time-killer for that 15 minute bus ride home in the morning. Or if you just need a friggin break from planting turnips in Rune Factory.

So what you're saying is having things slow down when there are fifty objects onscreen gunning for you is a BAD thing?! ;)
