if were discussing the PS3 remote I have a quick question
What are the colored buttons used for?

BBEANLPHIE 08-22-07 10:04 PM

What would you guys recommend the nyko or the official ps3 remote?

Is it possible at all to turn off the system using the nyko one?

That is a drawback, but I find the white words/symbols against the black background make it easy to read even in low light.

No, the PS3 can't be turned off by IR commands. As far as I know the Sony remote is the only one that will turn the system on/off. That being said, I haven't used either of them. The sixaxis has worked fine for me when watching a movie.

I think Lionsgate started adding book marks to their Blu-rays and one of those buttons activates them. Other than that, nothing I know of yet.

Yes, that is the BIGGEST flaw....I have it, enjoy it, but I have to memorize all the button placements since I watch movies in the dark generally.

I guess we'll see backlight in V2.0 ;)

Sony launches TV tuner, recorder for PS3 (Europe for now)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070823/..._playstation_2

By MATT MOORE, AP Business Writer
Thu Aug 23, 9:33 AM ET

FRANKFURT, Germany - Sony Corp. took another step to lure new customers for its high-end PlayStation3, saying it would sell a device to let users record live television that can be stored on the game console or transferred to the PlayStation Portable for later viewing.

The combined television tuner and personal video recorder, dubbed PlayTV, is aimed at helping Sony boost sales of its high-end gaming console as well as its portable gaming unit. Sales are due to start in Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Britain in early 2008.

Sony announced the new product Wednesday at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany.

Using a format known in Europe as Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial, the PlayTV integrates into the PlayStation 3 console and lets users record individual episodes or entire series to its hard drive.

Sony said the device's twin TV tuners are high-definition ready and able to view, record and play back in that format. Recorded video can be sent wirelessly from the console to a PSP.

For all its advances, Sony's PS3 has faced formidable competition from rivals like Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

Sony had sold 4.3 million PS3 consoles as of June, compared with 11.6 million Xbox 360s and about 8 million Wiis.

The PS3 retails for 599 euros ($808) in Europe and $499 in the U.S. The company did not say how much PlayTV would cost or when it would be available elsewhere in Europe, Asia or the Americas.

Jonathan Arber and Jonathan Coham, analysts at Ovum, a London-based research firm, said PlayTV was the "next logical step" for Sony in competing with the Xbox 360, but said Sony still has to overcome the console's price and bring out more games.

Heavenly Sword gets a 7.0 on IGN UK

9.0 Presentation
Superficially at least, Heavenly Sword is an almost impeccable display of sheer, unrestrained talent.
9.0 Graphics
Minor framerate and tearing issues aside, Heavenly Sword is an absolute tour de force of visual splendour.
8.5 Sound
Voice acting, effects work and soundtrack hit all the rights buttons with gusto, although occasional dodgy level mixing hurts.
6.0 Gameplay
As solid as its component parts are, poor design decisions and awful structure mean they never make for a cohesive, satisfying whole.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
Despite the wealth of combos and extras to unlock, you'll be constnatly battling with tedium on subsequent play-throughs.
7.0 OVERALL
Ouch. First Lair gets mediocre reviews, and now Heavenly Sword? What is happening with the PS3 exclusives??

I don't understand why people expected either of these games to be AAA titles. The last games each of them made were garbage. Why would these be classics. Heavenly Sword looks alright for a God of War clone, but I would rather just play God of War.

Well, for me, God of War is an awesome AAA series, and I was hoping Heavenly Sword would be good too since it is basically "more of the same".

Plus, the PS3 needs all the AAA exclusives it can get to stand out from the competition. Since most gamers don't care about Blu-ray movies, there needs to be a lot of AAA exclusives to make the $600 more acceptable.

What made God of War so great is that it felt rather unique. The sequel took what was good and made it better, while taking out the stuff people complained about. They both have great stories, too. From the beginning, Heavenly Sword looked like an attempt to capitalize on that success, so it's really no surprise that just aping GOW didn't provide them with grade A material. Usually people don't use the word "clone" as a compliment in the video game world.

Anyone know how to tell if the 60gb PS3 I have has the EE in it or is it just a given that they all do?

Not true. I love Blu-Ray and my desire to watch HD movies will probably prompt me to buy a second PS3 for my bedroom plasma. That said, when I want to game, I play my Xbox 360. PS3 has nothing to offer yet.

It's been hyped as one of the big titles for the PS3. I personally think it looks about as good as Ninety Nine Nights, another big title that was hyped but seemed to disappoint (although I loved it).

I believe they all do in the US.

I think that all 60 GB models do (except the European models). I am not 100% sure on that though. I seem to remember that the price drop to $500 was later revealed to be more like a clearance sale since Sony plans to quit producing them and make the newer 80 GB (that does not have the Emotion Engine chip) as the one and only model available.

I did say most gamers. DVDTalk is not a fair representation of most gamers since this is a somewhat hardcore A/V site. Remember the survey not too long ago which said that 40% of PS3 owners did not even know that there is a Blu-ray drive in the PS3. That is a more accurate representation of "most" gamers.

Michael Corvin 08-23-07 08:59 PM

Yea! I just got my PS3 hooked up.

Boo! Sitting here waiting on a firmware update.

Supermallet 08-23-07 09:07 PM

So, are you getting Strangehold on the 360 or the PS3?

Michael Corvin 08-23-07 09:11 PM

Still not sure. I haven't looked into the online features yet. I would probably say 360 just because that is the bulk of my gaming library, and I much prefer the 360 controller to the Dual Shock/Sixaxis controller. Form factor is a huge selling point if you play in long sessions and right now the 360 pad can't be beat, IMO.

Supermallet 08-23-07 09:15 PM

I myself am going to wait to see what the reviews are on the PQ of Hard Boiled on the PS3 version before making my decision. I've got more than enough games to tide me over until then.

Folklore demo up along with videos and trailers.

Am I the only one that has to wait hours to download a demo? I have a 3MB download and things are lighting fast on my notebook and other wireless devices. However, the PS3 takes forever to download large files. I started the Folklore demo and ended up turning off my PS3 90 minutes later. The demo was only at 45%. Is there a setting I need to adjust in my Wi-fi settings?

Ocelot 08-24-07 10:19 AM

Nah, that happens to me too... i had stuffs stuck at 80% for a long time... i'm guessing it's a traffic thing.

I'm not sure this is me only or not, the other day i was downloading Darkness demo and at the same time updating the Wii's FW. The Wii's update never got finished while all downloads completed on the PS3 (a lot of stuffs). I left both system on for the night... The Wii got stuck in some kind of infinite loop or something, i can't turn it off, reset it, nada. I had to unplug the power cord and start the update all over...
