Maybe there could be a level past expert. Maybe call it 'guitarded'

Even if you wanted it harder, you wouldn't need an extra button, you would just need more songs like Trogdor, Jordan, Beast and the Harlot, Institutionalized, Hangar 18. But really, there are so few people that score that high that another level is really unnecessary.

The only song you listed I have a problem 5* consistently is Jordan, and I just plain don't like playing that song. Just because it is insanely fast doesn't mean it is fun. Trogdor I actually like, but its really easy. Institutionalized can be 5* as long as you can fudge through the 3 solo parts and hit the chorded parts with star power. Blah blah blah.
I'd much prefer an extra button, 4 or 5 button chords (which im sure we will see), something along that line. The thing I want the most that would never happen is keep the 5 buttons, but have an open note (just strumming). I hate having to hold down a set of buttons when the real artist is just strumming away and thats it.
I'm also really glad to see the new guitar, I'm going to take back my 360 version of this game and just stick with the PS2 until they release it. I hate the explorer. Hate hate hate.

Personally I don't see the need for a 6th button (other than a little more symmetry with the real thing). I'm not sure what it adds. Technique wise it's not really any different than 5, it just requires moving your hand more. They can make the songs more difficult that way, but as you mentioned with Jordan, I'm not sure it makes them more fun.
Open notes could be an interesting addition though. Definitely different than just adding a new button.

Of course, there's the issue of having to get all-new guitars, so it's unlikely that they're going to go that route.

Something's not right...
In GH1/2, when you miss a note, only the guitar gets muted.
In Weezer video, when you miss a note, it sounds like the whole song is muted.
I thought they were getting the master track, with each instrument on its own track, not the song off a CD.

My buddy is working on GH3, as one of the guys who
place where the dots fall on the fretboard. Fun stuff!!
Will be interesting to see how the Beastie Boys song works out.
Personally I don't think the guitar should only ever control guitar sounds,
I would be cool with mapping it to scratching and all kinds of stuff.
But I'm sure that would piss some people off, hehe.

The battle mode is really weak, especially if both players are same-handed (lefties or righties). Who cares if they lefty flip you, just loo at the other person's screen. Who cares if the notes are all shaky, just look at the other person's screen. Who cares about difficulty up, I already play on Expert. So, the only ones that would even affect most people are the whammy, the one where you have to hit the fret a bunch, or double notes, which seems to be the most evil. I'll stick to pro faceoff, more than likely.

As for activation, I'm assuming it's probably done the same way you activate star power, as I don't think there's any star power notes in those videos (I could be wrong). It also looks like each powerup you get overwrites the last one, so you can only have one at a time.

That new guitar with better button placement (especially the xbox button), wireless and the addition of Weezer, smashing Pumpkins, The D, Beasties and EVEN FLOW make this a no brainer completely for me... I have played 'life wasted' a lot, but that won't even come close to the amount of times I'm going to be playing Even Flow, Jonas and Cherub Rock.... can't wait!

One of the early articles from a couple months ago mentioned something about customizable faceplates. Maybe the faceplates will have the pick guards.
