It was a good game, but probably in the 8.0 range for me. Controls were still to clunky for me compared to more recent third person action games like Gears of War, and I hated the damn interactive cutscenes where you had to press buttons when they popped up on the screens.

It was also a bit to long for an action game for me (22 hours to beat for me). I'm a casual fan of the genre, and kind of like the 8-10 hour action games like God of War or Gears of War that I can power through in a few days. With RE4 I was really laboring to get through the last half of the game.

no worries...you make some good points. i just got the game about a month ago with my new slim silver ps2. the game hasn't left my ps2 since i got it. i absolutely love it, and I was not a Resident Evil fan before RE4. RE4 just corrected everything that i despised about the other Resident Evils. This is the only Resident Evil that I actually finished(several times by the way). I hated those friggin ink ribbons in RE1 -- dumbest idea ever IMHO. As far as the interactive cutscenes go -- I liked them -- reminded me so much of Shenmue on the good ole dreamcast.

I was never a fan of the RE games since there'd be too many dudes coming at me and I couldn't manipulate the controls in time and would just freak out at some dude on my neck while there's another about to get me from the front and so on. Maybe the new controls will be better. Maybe I'll get it with that gun thing and just Laser Tag it up.

Yeah, Shenmue was one game I absolutely hated. Between those damn cutscenes, having to wait around to meet people are certain times, often having no where near enough guidance on what to do to trigger the plot along, mundane tasks like working the forklift to earn money etc. they game just bored me to tears.

The gun shell would be utterly useless in RE4. Would make the game pretty much impossible to play.

It would work with RE: Umbrella Chronicles as that is just a light gun game that uses the Wiimote.

once again -- BLASPHEMY!!! Shenmue was a fantastic experience. i didn't like the sequel too much, but I have such fond memories of playing Shenmue 1 on my dreamcast.

The arcade was pretty cool, but I wasn't a fan of the Sega games you could play.

Yep, admittedly I have pretty narrow gaming tastes.

Platformers (especially 2D), Japaneses RPGs, adventure games (zelda not the point and click crap or stuff like Shenmue) and the occasional action, puzzle, sports or FPS game are about all I like.

I've gotten more critical with age too as I'm some what "grown out" (though I hate to use that term for games as it's not really a maturity thing IMO) and generally would rather watch a movie or read etc. when I have some spare time at home.

But I do still love a great game, I'm just more critical in what classifies as great and worth my time these days.

I picked this up. Man, I suck at this game. I'm stuck about 10 minutes into the game. I haven't played a RE game in years and was pretty good back in the day.

Gamefly is sending this to me. I had other stuff in front of it, but they all had low availability, so I'm getting this. It will be neat to check out the new controls. I hope I don't like it too much more than the GC version -- cause I don't want to want it.

The beginning bit at the village is one of the toughest spots in the game. Once the bell rings, the game will get easier.

You have to wait until the church bell rings. There are two possible triggers for it. Either kill about 20 or so villagers or wait a certain amount of time, and the bell will ring. Then you will be free to move on. Explore around in the houses too, there is quite a bit of ammo in the houses. Also, one house holds a shotgun...

I picked it up for $20 and some change (I had a $5 Reward zone cert, and the $5 couponette from gamepro, via cheap ass gamer..). I'm going to fire it up now...I can't wait to see what the controls are like, as I haven't played RE since Code Veronica on the Dreamcast...

Honestly, finding that is one of the most important things you can do to make the game easier, as it's a while before you can buy one, and you save a lot of money by not having to buy it that you can use in fully upgrading it (was my go to weapon) and buying other weapons etc.

The second most important thing is to find or buy the Broken Butterfly (the magnum) and upgrade it to the teeth and save any magnum ammo you find for the last 3 or 4 bosses. They go down pretty damn easy with it. I probably should have used it a bit more earlier though, as I had a lot of ammo for it left over after the last boss.

Mine shipped from Buy.com...hopefully will be here by the weekend.

My weapons advice:

I wouldn't upgrade the shotgun too much other than power...rather, save your money for upgrading the Striker the moment you get it. Still cool that they give you a free shotgun and it gets you at least half-way through the game.

The Broken Butterfly is just a nasty weapon when fully upgraded. Don't bother with any other magnum in spite of their larger clips, faster firing, and faster reload. The sheer power of the Butterfly puts it over the top...and it's free to boot.

Don't bother too much upgrading handguns either...other than the Red 9. It's the most powerful 9mm, and it's all about conserving ammo...though I'm sure you'll finish with plenty leftover.

Striker, Broken Butterfly, Red 9...all other weapons are not worth the time or money.

Well, picked this up last night. Picked up RE4 GC to play on the Wii already, but got a little frustrated with the aiming mechanics and put it aside for a while.

What an improvement!!

I picked of a whole mess 'o villagers once I got the hang of it. Kneecap, kneecap, headshot!!

Haven't gotten too far, just wanted to get a feel for the new control scheme. I think slightly tweaked, this control scheme could work very well for FPS.

I think this game is better than every other RE combined

The controls are good, but their sorry excuse for a 'strafe' kinda aggrevates me.

I like the bolt action rifle. There are several places in the game where a sniper rifle is handy. One of the bosses you have to shoot a small target from a long range, so a sniper rifle makes it really easy. It also makes the shooting gallery easy as pie.

I do agree that the sub-machinegun is completely useless. The damage output is too low, and there really isn't that much ammo for it either.

It is also pointless to have 2 handguns or 2 shotguns, etc. You only need one of each type of gun. I never bothered with the Red 9. Although it does have the highest damage of the handguns, by the time you actually need the high power, you probably won't be using the handgun much anymore anyway. The last 3/4 of the game, the shotgun became my primary weapon, and I hardly ever touched the handgun again. You can get a free Punisher handgun very early in the game (do the "shoot the 15 blue medallions" minigame for it), and that handgun is sufficient.
