No, but they might make some more impulse buys for Halo 3 with a price cut.

Josh H 06-08-07 10:27 AM

Good news. Have a new HD set and would love to pick up a 360, but no way at $400.

edstein 06-08-07 10:28 AM

Maybe they should just drop the premium sku and lower the price of the elite to $399.

There have been rumors for a while that the premium is going away, so that might happen. I don't know if Joe Sixpack would accept that as a price drop though. I don't think it would affect sales much.

I agree. Wouldn't get me to bite. Premium at $300 probably would be enough.

Price drop + new 65nm chip + Elite = Me finally owning a 360

Michael Corvin 06-08-07 10:43 AM

The article implies that it is competition from the Wii, rather than the more expensive PlayStation 3, that is leading current thinking on Xbox 360 pricing and software, with Microsoft apparently planning to add more family games and change retail displays to make children’s titles easier to find.
I guess Nintendo has succeeded at being the "disrupter." No longer are they just outselling the competition they are causing the competition to rethink their strategy. Nice.

The premium should go away? Do you mean the core? It makes more sense to drop the core than the premium...

Anyway, I think a price drop is overdue. The 360 will have been out 2 years this November. Has any console gone 2 full years without a single price drop?

The rumors I've heard have been the Premium going away. But really, both the Premium and core should probably go away.

edstein 06-08-07 12:32 PM

I thought the Core was already dropped.

Michael Corvin 06-08-07 12:49 PM

The core is MS's best chance at a uber cheap system like the PS2. That is why it exists. It doesn't makes sense now, but once they can get it under $200 they will move a lot more.

The Core will not go away. Especially if MS is truly intent on battling Nintendo now instead of Sony. There's no way they will get the Premium down to $250 anytime soon. The average consumer that has been weened on the Sony method is used to buying a system and a memory card. It's just the way it works.

The hardcore crowd knows better, but for the past 10 years, you buy a system you buy a memory card. It's just the way it is.

Decadance 06-08-07 03:09 PM

Anyone else having an issue with xbox live? I can connect fine, system auto logs in like normal. I, however, cannot connect to a single game of Catan. I just checked on my PC and I am timing out when attempting to ping www.xbox.com also. Anyone else or any ideas?

1998Nole 06-08-07 04:38 PM

It is doing the same to me as well. I just finished playing an arcade game and it took at least 30-40 seconds to go back the games blade. It was totally locked up. People are also posting about this same issues on the xbox forums, so at least MS should be aware of the issue.

Why should the premium be dropped? There are only two things the elite has that the premium does not: a 100GB bigger hard drive and HDMI. Very few people have an HDMI capable TV to begin with, so many people don't need that. A bigger hard drive is only necessary if you like to download TV shows and movies and whatever. For someone like me who only downloads demos and deletes them after playing them, 20GB is more than enough.

Yeah I get that the average consumer is not knowledgeable enough to know that you really should get a hard drive rather than a memory card. However, they should learn that lesson. When the PS1 came out, everyone had to learn that you could not save games directly to a CD-ROM like you could with old Nintendo carts. The original Xbox had a mandatory hard drive, and now suddenly the 360 does not. Isn't technology supposed to progress, not regress?

Josh H 06-08-07 05:07 PM

Personally I think they should drop the Premium to $299 and the Elite to $399 and drop the core this fall.

That would be a real kick in the nuts to Sony IMO.

mrglass 06-08-07 05:10 PM

I was having some problems earlier downloading some new demos, but everything seems to be working fine now.

The funny thing it seems like almost everyone agrees that would be a great move for the last 6 months. Everyone except Microsoft I guess.

Well, the fact is the Premium is still $200 cheaper than the PS2, so they don't have much incentive to drop.

Apparently they are starting to worry about the Wii some, so hopefully that will spurn a price drop by fall.

Just to settle an argument from a few pages ago.

When I watched the GTA IV trailer posed online, I KNEW I was gonna have to buy a console in september, so I just bought the 360 now.

the GTA IV TRAILER sells consoles

DJ_Longfellow 06-08-07 09:39 PM

Wow, I just got done playing a majority of the new demos....what garbage ;)

- Pirates - Junk, horrible controls
- Hour of Victory - Maybe original XBOX it would pass
- Shadowrun - Has some potential, but I was a bit confused at times.
- Tenchu Z - I gave it all but 2 minutes.

Oh well, only demos...they are free and I love them :)

Flatout trailer looked promising.

Supermallet 06-08-07 09:41 PM

Try the Overlord demo. I've already played it multiple times.

MasterofDVD 06-08-07 11:01 PM

Overlord is pretty cool. I called my buddy as soon as I got off work to see if he tried it. He didn't care for it but said that he knew it would be right up my alley. He was spot on as always. It's simple gameplay but it's very fun.

Another thing I like is having a home to come back to in a game. Once I bought the one tower download for Oblivion I always went back to it to save. There is just something neat about having a virtual home. I'm not sure what you can do, if anything, to customize your Tower in this game but I am curious about what the Tower will evolve into.

Michael Corvin 06-08-07 11:39 PM

 I cracked the top 50 on Pac-Man: CE. I made it to 47 on Extra 2. I have already dropped to 50 though.

xmiyux 06-08-07 11:54 PM

If anyone has Shadowrun for Vista and is going to be playing this weekend let me know. I have it rented and would love to snag some of the cross-platform achievements.

Microsoft says no price drop on the way

Summary:
In response to the vibrant buzz caused by rumors claiming that Microsoft intends to make the Xbox 360 competitive by cutting its price, the company has clarified its position by stating that it has no immediate plans to do so.

Although most rumors these days center on the price of the PS3, the gaming press was all abuzz about price cuts for the Xbox 360 for a change, due to a report today from Bloomberg. Utilizing the opinions of analysts and the quotes of certain Microsoft execs, the article reached the conclusion that the next-gen console may undergo a price cut in order to compete with the more popular Nintendo Wii.

"We are well aware that the sweet spot of the market is really 199 bucks,'' said Xbox product management director David Hufford, who was quoted in the article.

However, despite heightened enthusiasm shown by much of the press and gamers across the internet, Microsoft later explained today in their official Gamerscore Blog that the original Bloomberg piece used his quotes somewhat out of context.

"Some are getting really spun up about the Bloomberg story and inaccurately reading tea leaves that don't exist," Hufford later explained. "I spoke to Bloomberg nearly two months ago and we were talking about NPD data that had just been released, and chatting generally about price points of consoles in the market. The comment, which is accurately reported, unfortunately has now been taken way out of context and being reported as if I am signaling a price drop. I was not, I am not."

"With Xbox 360s selling well at their current price point, Elites selling out at $479, and an insanely great portfolio of games in the market, there's no reason to announce any kind of price drop anytime soon," Hufford concluded.
Of course, MS would not want to confirm a price drop for fear of sales stagnating until then...
