I usually just auto-battle unless to cast a certain buff/debuff.
The first paradigm shift of a battle takes the longest.

Re: FFXIII Thread of chocobo ranching
Should be close to finishing the game and still have no idea what this buff/debuff thing you guys are talking about. Must be because i've only been using the 3 chicks. I don't think i've every used synergy, barely ever use sentinel. I even let Hope get up to 999,999 chrys points lol.
I think the main reason I never switched characters was because my set paradigms would disappear after changing, and i'm too lazy to reset them again.

I don't think so. I try to pay attention to the ammount of damage done. For example, against a Viking in Chapter 8, a Ravanger uses: Water, Aquastrike, Water, AquaStrike, and the aquastrike always seemed to do more damage. So once I stagger, I switch to manual and use all aquastrikes... not a very extensive data sample, but that's what I'm seeing...

Aquastrike is Water damage. They do pick what type of element they are weakest against, but they just aren't very smart past that. One of my big pet peeves is what the AI will decide to cast as a buff/debuff.

Anyone else still playing?
I made it up to Chapter 13 then went to farm for CP, components, and Chocobo treasures in an effort to get 1000/1000 and I realized this morning that I just don't care. It's not worth it to spend my time riding a Chocobo around pulse trying to 5-star all the Cie'th stones. So I'm just going to play through to the end of the story and leave it at that. Maybe I'll come back to it later and grind out more achievements, but probably not.
Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the game, but at 60-hours, it's time to move on.

I'm still playing, I can put it down for a week at time since I have no clue what the hell is going on the story and just battle. I'm on chapter 11, just got done with Taejin tower.

Re: FFXIII Thread of chocobo ranching
I finished it weeks ago. I have only completed about 10 missions. I was going to go back and try and do all the missions but it got boring, just doing the same thing. I traded it in and put the value towards "Resonance of Fate", another JRPG, and this is meant to be quite good. I may pick up FF13 again in the future when it hits greatest hits, otherwise I am done with it.
I thought it was a great game.

Still playing and I'm almost to Chapter 8. It's the first Final Fantasy I plan on playing through from beginning to end, been enjoying it. Beautiful game.

So, I got codes for registering my game that gives me avatar items. Does anybody know where I put those codes to get that stuff?

Oops. I misunderstood your meaning. I got codes in my package that gave you in-game items for FFXIV, but I have the PS3 version.
Luckily, pinata242 is not a complete idiot and steered you right.
I've accepted your friend request (I presume you are "Analrapist69"?)

Re: FFXIII Thread of chocobo ranching
About freaking time someone provided a useful review for this game! I can finally tell that, FOR ME, it's worth $20 and no more because while I find weapon leveling useful, I may or may not enjoy the paradigm system. So I'll see if I can get it at BB for $20 tomorrow.
Thanks for the link.

After battle, you get a ranking 1-5 stars, and some points.
Do either of those actually matter? I ask because I turned ATB down to Slow so I could actually appreciate combat [otherwise it seems like too much of a button masher, at least so far], and of course you get more points if you finish the battle faster, so now I'm getting 4 stars on some instead of 5.
I actually like Vanille so far, except that her accent seems to change sometimes, moving from Southern Belle to French or Cajun mixed with a little British or Islands and some other Whoknowswhat.

There's a formula the game has as to what should be an "optimal" time to finish a battle: based on your party's characteristics and the opponent. The better you do in regards to that time affects the points and the stars. CPs you gain always seem to be the same. But the points affect TPs and perhaps influence better item drops.
And of course there are trophies to be earned from some "5 star" battle results.
I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. There's not much of a difference between 4 and 5 stars. It's more important that you play in a manner that you enjoy. Your rewards will still be plenty good enough to build up powerful characters.

Re: FFXIII Thread of chocobo ranching
I actually went back up to 'normal' speed, now that I've got the hang of the paradigms.
I like what someone said, it's not a traditional JRPG, it's more of a "metagame" where you set your plans up and see what happens. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would, but part of that is the Crystarium. I think FFT's Job system, FFX2's dressspheres, and FFXIII's Crystarium are my favorite methods of character building.
In some ways the game is really different from all the other FFs I've played. Very linear so far [which I like], the meta-game, the very limited stats and equipment. It's a very slimmed down version, allowing you to really focus on the paradigms/roles. I can see where many people might not like it, but I do.
One minor complaint is that it's annoying to upgrade a weapon, then pick up something else that may or may not be better. Also, the fact that at least up to this point, you have no control over your party members. Which in a way is a mixed blessing - I don't have to work at constantly rearranging my party so that one person doesn't get left four levels behind, and it lets me really focus on optimizing the characters I do have.
Overall though it speeds up enough of the stereotypical RPG elements to keep it new and addictive [so far, about 20 hours in]. Hope I'll continue to be addicted once it 'opens up' and I have the multiple missions to work through [although I've never really been a completionist.]
