they do have montana passing the football, and ronny lott returning kicks BTW, I would play this and Super Tecmo Bowl over any of the Maddens. |
yea, im in the same boat. I'm more apt to play classic nes sports game compared to their "next-gen" counterparts

The key is to find a reviewer (or review source) you tend to agree with on it. The reviews from site to site/magazine to magazine have been all over the place. But it seems like within site/magazine they've been pretty consistent. For me EGM/1up.com have been pretty spot on as I too have just not liked most of the motion control stuff I've played thus far outside of Zelda and Wiisports. |

Speaking of great LB's, is it Tecmo Bowl or Super Tecmo Bowl where you can basically block every single extra point/field goal attempt with LT? |
I know I'm part of the minority, but, I always enjoyed NES Play Action Football much much more than Tecmo Bowl or Tecmo Super Bowl.

OMG, I played the HELL out of Tecmo Bowl back in the day. I'm very tempted to download that one and grab the old NES controller.
And I agree with darkside, I would much rather play Tecmo Bowl than any of the new Madden games. As someone who isn't football crazy, the near simulation that is Madden just goes way over my head. I feel like you really have to know all about football to do well with Madden, rather than just be a good gamer. |
Whoa, this Tecmo download may just make be get into VC's.
|
|
Just downloaded this and they did go in and remove all the player names. Still a fun game, but this ruins the experience a tiny bit. I think I would rather play my unaltered version on my emulator.
|
Grabbed Tecmo Bowl and Donkey Kong Country... two of my favorite games of all time.
I was immediately disappointed by the lack of player names, but the game is still a blast. |
Just downloaded and played Tecmo Bowl. As fun as it was, I always remembered loving Super Tecmo Bowl even more on the NES. Hopefully, that one is coming soon
|
I downloaded Tecmo Bowl as well. It's as fun as I remember it being, but the lack of names does diminish it just a bit. I talked my son, who whips me in every modern game, into playing a game against me. I promptly stomped on him 55-0 (I missed one field goal messing around). He'll never play against me again, and complained the whole time how much the game "sucked". What a difference 17 years in game development makes.

I played several games of Tecmo Bowl tonight and it is still a blast (go dynasty 49ers). I really love the Classic Controller so all in all it was worth the 500 points which in real money for me was about $3.75 since I picked up my cards for $15. Now if they want the rest of my points they will hurry up and release Super Metroid and Super Mario RPG. |
Is Super Swing Golf a deal at $30 (on sale next week at Best Buy)?

I've finally knocked the dust off the Wii playing Resident Evil 4 (GC) and some VC games the past few days.
I'm still having a love/hate affair with RE4. It's very good, but it just feels "off." With the new action oriented design (rather than the scary survival horror design of the past games) the still cluncky (though improved) controls and still semi-scarce ammo just don't feel right and kind of annoy me. I think part of the problem is playing this after Gears of War which is just a much better 3rd person shooter IMO...I guess I'm kind of wishing the game just either played more like that, or you had more ability to run away rather than killing everything as in past RE games. My other gripe is a typical one from me, the game is just too fucking hard. :p If there was an easy mode, I'd already be in it. I just beat the third boss and finished up chapter 2 and saved at the beginning of chapter 3-1. My death count is at like 37, and is actually higher since I've had several times where I saved, died a bunch and just turned it off to come back and try again later. My biggest gripe is a lot of deaths are in little staged sequences where it's just sheer trial and error to either figure out what to do (i.e. the truck running down the hill at you) or memorizing where enemies are to shoot them (i.e. the cable car section). But I'm still having fun with it, though I'm starting to doubt if I'll finish it. Definitely need to look at some faqs to get some tips on weapon purchases upgrades, I'm hording some money now mainly in case I need first aid sprays later on and want to make sure I don't waste it on useless upgrades or weapons. As for the Virtual Console, I've been playing a lot of Super Mario World. Man I love that game, either my favorite or second favorite game of all time (Super Metroid being the other--pretty much a toss up here). I've played this game countless times before, and this time actually figured out some stuff I hadn't before by using the blue Yoshi to open up the Special World before finding the blue switch palace--and also to open the star road early in the 3rd world. Hard to believe I hadn't found that before given how many times I've beat the game with the full 96 exits! I've also been playing a little Super Castlevania IV. Haven't played enough to say much about it, but so far it isn't as good as I remembered. Finally, I also downloaded A Link to the Past, but haven't touched it yet. That will have to wait until at least after finishing SMW. |

Josh, regarding RE4, unless you completely go off a FAQ, I recommend you buy the treasure maps from the merchants. If I remember correctly, they give you the location of valuable treasures that you can sell back for a lot of money. I remember the first time I played it, I was stingy with my money, but found out it was worth it to get those maps.

Patman, I think Super Swing Golf for $30 is a steal. I freakin love the game and even at $50 I thought it was well worth it. Although I think I'm in the minority here as I've heard almost no praise for the game on these forums.

JH, Kakihara1, thanks for the feedback on Super Swing Golf. I reckon with Tiger Woods 2007 now on Wii (tomorrow), SSG was probably ripe for a markdown, even temporarily.

There's a ton to do there to keep you busy and if the swing controls don't work for you (and they're perfectly fine if you don't swing too fast), there's always a standard button control to fall back on. $30 is a steal and with the coupon sheet Corvin linked to from CAG in the Xbox thread, you can get it for $25. |

Buying the right weapons also goes a long way. Buying the latest weapon they give you isn't always the best idea. After playing with all of them, I like the Red 9 (most powerful basic gun), the Striker (fastest shotgun), and the Broken Butterfly (most powerful and free)...all upgraded to the teeth. Easily one of my top 10 of all time...and I thought the difficulty level was just enough to keep you on edge without making you want to huck your controller through the TV. I'm with Josh on one thing though. I hated those button pressing exercises in cutscreens. Ugh. Anyway, hope you stick with it Josh. |
