That's an over generalization. While they aren't ruined, the 3D Mario's and especially the 3D Metroids are a far cry from their 2D counter parts. I've not revisited any of the 3D versions when I've played the shit out of the 2D games and still play them to this day.

Zelda, on the other had, was a raging success in 3D, with TP and OoT being the pinnacles of the series IMO.

I'm guilty of that on all three counts.

Many years later (well, maybe one year later in the case of Metroid) I was served three warm plates of crow.

Agreed. I loved AC for about 2 weeks, then I realized it was the same as doing the dishes. Not really that fun but you do it anyway.

That's why I've been afraid of AC (haven't played it yet). I was afraid that there wouldn't be enough to do. I'd like some of these games to have more goals to "advance" -- to actually feel like you're accomplishing something.

KurrptSenate 03-09-07 03:41 PM

you wind up spending all your time procuring some frigging furniture set, then realizing you didn't spend 10 minutes picking out the actual living room set in your house. Weird

I hated all the 3d zeldas, but loved the 3D metroids

Sunshine was OK, but it disappointed me. That stupid water pack actually made the game feel less fun, and ironically the best sections were the challanges where you had to go to the end of the course with out a water pack, IMO.
I still enjoyed the game though.

I'm still waiting on a lot of GOOD sequels to N64 games. I felt nearly ALL continued franchises on the Gamecube were inferior to their N64 brethren.

Mario 64 > Sunshine
Mario Kart 64 > Double Dash
Mario Golf 64 > Toadstool Tour
Mario Party 1 & 2 > MP 3-5(haven't given 6&7 a spin yet)
Waverace 64 > Blue Storm
Zelda: OoT > Wind Waker

F-Zero GX was the only sequel that surpassed the N64 title, IMO. Fortunately Nintendo brought us new franchises like Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion and revisited forgotten classics, Metroid Prime.

grim_tales 03-10-07 08:25 AM

Paper Mario: TTYD surpassed the N64 original, IMO. :)

I'd have to disagree on Mario Kart (I didn't care for Double Dash, but the courses were much better than the 64 snooze fest) and Waverace (I liked Blue Storm more), but you're spot on with the rest (save for Mario Party, which I haven't played through).

Didn't care for Pikmin/Luigi's Mansion so much but Metroid Prime made the system for me (didn't like Echoes) and is the best entry in the series imo, and Wind Waker may of been no OoT but was fantastic in its own right (hell nothing has lived up to OoT yet).

I have as much nostalgia as anyone for the N64, but aside from 3-4 huge titles, it was a wasteland of a console. The Gamecube has a much better library in just about every regard, and I even disagree on most of the sequels you mention.

Mario 64 is better than Sunshine, but it's also better than just about any platformer made since as well. Sunshine was a very fun variation on Mario, but was admittedly much less accessible.

I like Double Dash better than 64...I like the handbrake better than the hop and I like the tracks better.

Mario Golf? Pretty much the same...but the cube added other Mario sports titles, including the absurdly fun Mario Strikers and the pretty good Mario Baseball.

I'm hardly an expert on Mario Party...but they all sort of seem the same to me.

Blue Storm > Wave Race

As for Zelda, Twilight Princess > Ocarina of Time > Wind Waker > Majora's Mask...I'd call it a wash with all but Majora being absolutely brilliant

Starfox Assault > Starfox 64

Rogue Squadron II > Rogue Squadron

Metroid Prime >>>>>>> no Metroid

Jeremy517 03-11-07 01:33 AM

The N64 easily wins the platformer battle.
N64: Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Space Station Silicon Valley, plus arguably a few others
Gamecube: Mario Sunshine, arguably Wario World, and not much else.

I like the N64 Zeldas better on average, with Majora's Mask > Wind Waker > Ocarina of Time >>> Twilight Princess

Besides Mario 64 I find the platformers like Donkey kong 64, Banjo games havent aged well. So slow. and pretty much all about collecting items. I tried to play them recently and found them to be pretty boring compared to todays platformers.

I'd probably give the GC a slight edge over the N64 as well, but both were pretty poor systems in the long run due to the lack of third party exclusives that I enjoyed. Nintendo's games are great, but they can only make so many a year and keep the quality up.

As for the game discussion.

Mario 64 is much better than Sunshine (though it is still good)
Twilight Princess I liked a good bit better than OoT or MM, but Wind Waker is probably my least favorite Zelda.
Mario Kart 64 I liked better than Double Dash (The DS game is much better than either though)
Mario Party's and Mario Sports titles I don't care for on either.
Rogue Squadron II is the best in the series by far.
Wave Race: BS is better than the first--their more or less the same and the GC game looks much better.

And the GC has some nice exclusive series that give it an edge too with stuff like the RE 1 and 0, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime and so on.

But the biggest thing is graphics. While everyone knows I'm far from a graphics whore, first gen 3D console graphics (N64/PS1) are pretty tough on the eyes and I really can't stand to play those games today. So the GC has the advantage of having games that will hold up visually, and thus I can see my self playing some of these games in 10 years just like I still play SNES games a lot but rarely touch any NES games.

Oh, forgot above...

Melee > SSB

As for me, I lilke the SNES iterations of the big franchises over either their N64 or Cube versions.

Mario World/All-Stars > Mario64 > Mario Sunshine

Zelda Link to the past > OoT/MM > WW/TP

Super Metroid > Metriod Prime

Donkey Kong Countries > DK64

etc.

I think for their time, but some games haven't aged well. I still like to play old games (especially on a handheld), but I have to admit, like Josh, I'm not a graphics whore, but some of those older games are hard to look at. :)

(Un)Fortunately I never owned a N64 or GC, so I can vist all of them for the first time. I am actually excited at exploring the GC library (which is vast, despite to lack of 3rd party support -- 700 titles, I believe, with well over 100 scoring 80% or higher in metareviews).

It's funny how people point to GC's failure. Failure compared to the PS2? Sure. Failure compared to the SNES and NES? Ok. But really, Xbox didn't sell that much more than the GC and people don't generally call the Xbox a failure. It may have come in 3rd, but it was a close 3rd... and both the GC and Xbox were just REALLY far behind the PS2.

110%. In a drunken stupor I caved to the overpricing and got Super Mario Wold, Super Castlevania IV and Link to the Past on the virtual console last night. :D

The SNES is far and away my favorite system of all time, and the one I'd want on a desert island.

SNES games hold up fine, they are second gen 2D graphics and still look good today, as the 2nd gen 3D games (GC, PS2, X-box) will similarly hold up. It's the first gen 2D (atari, NES, SMS etc.) and first gen 3D (N64/PS1) games that I could go the rest of my life without looking at again.

Maybe for the 8-bit NES, but I think the hand-drawn sprites for the SNES look just fine now, and haven't really aged (mostly because huge strides in 2D gaming having really been achieved since then). They hold up a hell of a lot better than the blocky polygons and blurry textures of the N64.

Yeah, the NES is the one I have the most experience with. I think I've only played 3 games on the SNES. :)

Then the virtual console is going to be a lot of fun for you!

The wait is killing me!

I've been waiting for new footage of Mario Galaxy since E3, the demo was incredible. I've played every Mario platformer, and Sunshine was my favorite. I can easily see MG replacing that game. Something I noticed in the trailer though, the star pointer is not present at all times. In the E3 demo a small star is always on screen, as a small fairy is present in Zelda when using the Wii-mote. I'm glad that we finally get two Mario adventures in the same year and not five years apart.

Nothing for me this week, but Tecmo Bowl should make some nostalgists very happy.

Tecmo Bowl™ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Tecmo Bowl pits the player versus the computer in 11-game, single-elimination playoff action. Players also can go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. The player can select from 12 teams. On offense there are usually two run and two pass plays to choose from. The player takes control of the quarterback before the snap and then either hands off to the running back or works through his receiver progression from the top to the bottom of the screen. Defense consists of trying to guess which offensive play the opponent will select and then taking control of one of the defensive players before the snap. A very simple power-meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points and punts.

Sonic Spinball™ (Sega Genesis, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points): Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) has taken over Mt. Mobius and turned it into a mechanical base. He is using energy from the magma flowing under the volcano to power his Veg-O-Fortress. He has the power to transform helpless animals into robots. Sonic the Hedgehog must take down this fortress to free the enslaved animals. The only way to make that happen is to trigger an eruption in the volcano it's built on. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcano stable. Dr. Eggman, however, is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

Double Dungeons (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): Double Dungeons is a dungeon role-playing game that features smooth-scrolling 3-D game play. Two players can play at the same time, which makes this game truly stand out from the rest. There are 22 unique scenarios, spread out among six levels. The higher the level is, the harder the scenario. Because each scenario is independent, players can choose to start the game from any scenario other than the final one. Players defeat monsters in each dungeon to gain experience while searching for the "key" that opens the door to the room with the boss. They buy equipment at the shop, team up with characters and defeat the boss to clear a scenario. Players must conquer all 21 scenarios from levels 1 through 5 to obtain passwords. If they obtain all of them, they make their way to the final scenario!

PixyJunket 03-12-07 08:09 AM

Double Dungeons! I might just grab that one, I have good memories of playing that co-op.

kurupt 03-12-07 08:19 AM

Does Tecmo Bowl have the real "classic" teams (i.e. Bears w/ Payton and the Browns w/ QB Browns) or is it the Red team vs. the Blue team?
