I finally got a Wii today, and this is the first game I'll be buying.

Man, I loved that game...

Just wanted to say I recently moved to New Brunswick so we're practically neighbors.

Details on Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

April 4, 2007 - If you were expecting a full Resident Evil style adventure game in Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii, you'd better sit down for this one. The latest issue of Famitsu has a first look at the game following the teaser look provided last September in the build up to the Tokyo Game Show. Surprisingly, Capcom has opted to make a gun shooting game rather than a survival horror adventure.

Umbrella Chronicles takes place from the first person as your characters move through a fully 3D mansion. Using the Wiimote, you take aim at enemies and fire away. You have control over your path only at the occasional branch points in the stages. Everywhere else, you're on a fixed path, although you are free to look around. Doing so is apparently the key to discovering secret items.

Outside of the first person shooting, the game will bring back the command-based event sequences of Resident Evil 4. During these sequences, you'll get to see the main characters directly face off against attacking zombies.

Umbrella Chronicles brings the original Resident Evil hero and heroine back into the spotlight. That's right, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine play prominent roles this time around. Famitsu hints that they'll be adventuring together, although we're not sure if this means we can expect multiplayer support. The two S.T.A.R.S. members will be joined by some other recognizable characters, including Albert Wesker, Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen.

The game's storyline looks like it will fit the name "Chronicles." You can expect to be filled in on the details behind everything from RE0 all the way to collapse of the Umbrella Corporation at the start of RE4.

Your first look at Umbrella Chronicles will likely come in late May, as Capcom will be including a trailer for the game with the Wii version of Resident Evil 4. As for the full game, it's currently 25% complete and without a final release date.
So the game is going to be an on-rails shooter a la arcade light-gun games. :thmbsdwn: :thmbsdwn:

This is what I had heard about the game before this point. Personally, I can't wait.

I wouldn't mind an on-the-rails shooting game a la House of the Dead, but I'd prefer House of the Dead and a real Resident Evil game.

Supermallet 04-05-07 05:28 PM

Umbrella Chronicles was never going to be a "real" Resident Evil game, as it was always planned to be alternate takes on events that occurred throughout the series. This wasn't going to be a Code Veronica X or even an Outbreak. It was always meant to be an aside for the series.

taffer 04-05-07 05:34 PM

Umbrella Chronicles is meant to be a "real" RE game in the sense that it is to cover the entire RE saga from RE0 through RE4 and explain plot holes like what happened between the time of Code Veronica and RE4. The "side" games like Outbreak and Survivor have nothing to do with the characters or story from the "real" RE games.

DodgingCars 04-05-07 05:40 PM

Ok.. I mean real as in genre/style of gameplay.

KenKeith 04-05-07 07:33 PM

i hope they put n64 paper mario on the VC on monday, never got a chance to play it and i'd like to pick that up w/ star fox 64

My SO went to the Nintendo store (at the Rockefeller Plaza) today hoping to buy the Wii. She got there at 8 a.m., and there were over 100 people in line in front of her. She saw at least 25 people walk out of the store with a Wii. Needless to say, she wasn't able to get one.

Where can you find a Wii nowadays for the $250 price? And, how long until I can walk into any store and find one?

I had originally guessed end of Feb, mid-March at the very latest. Here we are nearly a week into April and it is still difficult to find a Wii (at least in my area). I'd say that mid-May/beginning of June.

tonyc3742 04-06-07 07:52 AM

Yeah, I was thinking around now they'd be more available. According to itrackr, the Wii has 13% national availability (PS3 shows 94%). Also according to them, 1 EB and 1 GS near me has them. I lucked into mine at a WalMart on a Saturday in what appeared to be a not-very-gaming-oriented area. But that's the only one I've seen live.
A combination of staking out stores and dealing with the ticket/voucher things, or just getting lucky, I guess.

Wow, they're still hard to come by?! I wasn't planning on getting one, then was bored the night before launch, so waited in line and got one. I hadn't paid any attention to availability since. So this is why people are proclaiming Nintendo has won this generation already?

Michael Corvin 04-06-07 09:58 AM

No people are proclaiming that because it is basically outselling the PS3 2:1 and has nearly caught up with the 360's year head start in a matter of months.

Well yeah, I figured they were hard to find because they were selling a lot. :)

Exactly. I find it strange that people accuse Nintendo of deliberately holding inventory back when the Wii is still far outselling the PS3 and 360.

Michael Corvin 04-06-07 10:17 AM

Well they have always maintained that the Wii is simple to produce, so I suspect it is a little of both.

I just don't think it is the extreme most people think where there is a warehouse somewhere stockpiling Wiis and only shipping out a fraction of them at a time.

PixyJunket 04-06-07 10:22 AM

I don't think it's quite fair to say Nintendo is "winning" this generation (and I always thought the concept of console wars was pretty stupid anyway), but it does show that they definitely succeeded in their goal of delivering a new gaming experience and bringing in (or back in) people that were, understandably so, turned off by game pads with three controllers and sixteen buttons. They've also succeeded in brining developers back to thinking about making a game fun instead of thinking about a game in terms of its concept, cinematics and salability.

tonyc3742 04-06-07 11:00 AM

Well, or helping developers realize that a fun, novel game *can* be sale-able and profitable. That initial developer resistance or rather wariness is part of why we've got a bit of a third-party game drought right now.
What I heard/read was that the hardware sales availability issue isn't due to production so much, as it is due to shipment to stores.
I don't know if the Wii is 'winning' but I think it's doing a hell of a lot better than anyone expected.

aktick 04-06-07 02:37 PM

So since I haven't been paying attention forever...what games should I look at? At launch I got Zelda, Trauma Center, Monkey Ball, and Marvel UA.

Looking at ratings on various sites, it doesn't look like many games have been too highly praised?

What are your suggestions? (looking for any type of game, really...but also have a 360)

Michael Corvin 04-06-07 02:59 PM

Owned:
Excite Truck - Very fun. I was surprised how fun it was. Not a very deep game though. Supports custom soundtracks which is great.

Sonic & the Secret Rings - Pretty good. Controls aren't perfect, but it is a solid little title. My first Sonic game. The layout of how you progress through the game is less than ideal, but it is doable. You have to replay each area 10x with a different objective each time.

Rayman: Raving Rabbids
- was very fun. Good for some silly multiplayer action. Although not all games are simultaneous play.

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves - is decent. Not my cup of tea, but it did use the Wiimote pretty creatively. There are a bunch of people here that like it.

Wii Play - again, more mini-games, but worth it if you need an extra controller.

Madden 07 - Pretty fun. I'm not a huge football game fan but running the offense was very fun. Defense, not so much.

Others:
the Godfather: Blackhand Edition - Kurrpt Senate has praised this game so much that others are slowly picking it up. I'm going to wait for some more feedback from other users. :)

SSX Blur - Very mixed reviews. Supposedly has a very steep learning curve to the more difficult tricks but it seems the payoff is worth it from those that take the time to master it.

Super Paper Mario - Comes out Tuesday and has been getting steady 9's in early reviews. Sounds like they took the Paper Mario franchise and mashed it with the original Super Mario Bros. series. Looks very cool.

The first 5 games I've owned/played and would say none are worth more than $30. So buy used or on sale with coupons/gift cards. Out of the above list though if you are itching to buy something, I have had more fun with Excite Truck than any of rest. Sonic is about as good though. I listed them in order of my preference.

DodgingCars 04-06-07 02:59 PM

Super Paper Mario should be really good. Early reviews agree. I've heard really good things about Godfather.

I've enjoyed Sonic, SSX, Warioware, and Excite Truck
