IGN is full of shit. Laser hockey is awesome (pong wii style), fishing is great for laughs, and the billiards is actually a pretty cool sim of the sport (although not really any modes obviously). I had more fun with those 3 games on wii play than anything on wii sports. Some of the others are a bit naff but take the good with the bad.

I actually read the IGN review. To be honest, the text of the review is mostly spot on. I didn't have the same control issues with billiards. And the slightly tricky controls of laser hockey, added a lot of fun for me. As long as you're with some friends and enjoying some beers, expect to have a good laugh at each other's own goals. They do seem to like the tank game a lot, but you need to understand that it requires the nunchuk so we couldn't play it 2 players. My friends all liked it, but I did find it a poor fit for the wii controls.
When it comes down to it, although they acknowledge it in the text of their review, the actual overall score of 5.5 doesn't factor in the inclusion of the wii remote in the package. It's more like the rating you'd give it if it was an actual $40 game.
Btw their Gain Ground review was pretty much spot on.

They also support two-player competitions.

I think a lot of people are buying Wii Play for the remote. I can't even find a remote around me, so the idea of getting an extra remote and a game for $50 is what sold me. $10 for a cheap game that I may or may not like isn't a big deal.

The score is just holding the game to the same standards of every other game, which is how it should be I guess. If Zelda, Gears of War etc. are 9-10 games, a cheap mini-game collection that's basically a tech demo for the controller probably should bet around a 5.5 since it's not really a full polished game.
But that doesn't mean it's not worth $10 for those who need an extra Wiimote, and that comes across in the text of the review as they generally thought the games were ok.
At any rate, I'm passing as I hate minigame collections and have no desire for a third Wiimote give I've played the Wii multiplayer for probably a total of 3 hours since getting it on launch day.

Yeah I wouldn't bother much with wiiplay for single player. But I'd say the same applies to wii sports, just it happens to be a packin in this case. Looking at the Japan releases, wii sports fully priced, or wiiplay with a remote, I know where my money would go in that situation.

The pool game was pretty fun
The Tank game was a fun game. I remember playing it on old school atari
Fishing game worthless
Twist the mii game not a replay
ping pong game was allright all it is keeping track of volleys
find the mii girlfriend had a great time with it i was like blah
ride the cow ok for a time killer
laser hockey fun against someone else boring against the cpu
the duck hunt like game fun if you loved old duck hunt
Id say pick it up if its under 40 with the wiimote dont buy for more than 19.99 without the wiimote

I got to Best Buy when it opened. I grabbed the Departed and went right to the Wii section. There were about 30 copies and at least 5 of us getting Wii Play. My cousin was there about a half hour later and said there were only 10 plus a few other people were getting it. Seems like its flying off the shelves pretty quickly.

If you're paranoid about it not being in stock at bestbuy and can't get away from work, you can always schedule it for in store pickup, since that option is now available from bestbuy.com. Not sure if you can use a coupon when you go to pick it up in store, though.

I think I'm going to pass. Now I have to go get my pre-order money back. I was down for the extra wiimote, but I already have two and don't really need a third. I think I'd rather get Sonic next week and possibly Lost Planet(on sale, BB courtesy of Speedy) or Crackdown.
