Most consoles have a little hole in the box so that stores can scan the serial numbers of consoles directly... and this does go on the receipt. I can only imagine it's so that people don't try to exchange their old consoles for new ones.

correct. kmart, walmart, bb & compusa I know print the serial numbers of consoles on the reciepts. I've purchased something vg related from all those places.

RichC2 01-24-07 11:18 PM

You know, I know the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube had visible system serial numbers on the box (via a hole), but I haven't noticed them on the newer gen of consoles.

Decker 01-25-07 01:41 AM

The 360 has a little flap that reveals the serial number.
But when I recently took my Xbox back for credit (to get a DVD-HD for the 360), they definitely didn't scan or check the number, they just made sure everything was there and then they gave me the credit, no hassle at all.

Anyway, my new quandary is : do I buy a $30 replacement plan for the HD-DVD? We all know that this player is sub-optimal, but cheap. I guess it's a gamble. If I think I can buy a much better HD-DVD player in two years for around $200, then the replacement plan is worth it. If they're still $400 or more, it really isn't something I'll be likely to upgrade. So at this point my mind isn't made up either way...

WhooHooo! Finally got my third 360 back from MS. I think it might be a new one. It is perfect. Manufactured in mid-October 2006. Had the sticker over the drive bay and IR port. Glad they didn't send the broken piece-of-shit one back that they sent me the first time around.

Haven't had time to try it out though. Just set it up to d/l Crackdown this morning before work.

Huge Xbox 360 Sales Boost Microsoft Earnings

By Scott M. Fulton, III, BetaNews
January 25, 2007, 4:44 PM

One hour before Microsoft's Q2 2007 earnings conference, absolutely stellar numbers for any corporation in any market segment point to the likelihood of extraordinary sales numbers for the Xbox 360, as a Christmas season without the consumer edition of Windows Vista certainly isn't responsible for what are record revenues.

The initial breakdown shows only modest seasonal gains in Microsoft's Business Division, with $3.5 billion in revenue in the year-end quarter versus $3.4 billion in the previous quarter, a gain of just 2.5% from the prior quarter, and an actual decline of 4.8% over the year-ago quarter.

But Entertainment and Devices went through the roof, with revenue over the holiday season of just under $3 billion, a gain of 187% over the prior quarter (that is not a typo), and a gain of nearly 76% over the 2005 holiday season.

As a result, Microsoft is posting a $12.5 billion quarter, most likely its best ever in terms of revenue. From a profit perspective, though, the cost of getting to $12.5 billion is pretty steep. Operating income for the entire company fell just over 25%, with Entertainment and Devices posting an income loss even after all that revenue.

With the development money on Xbox 360 already having been spent, that cost could likely be attributed to Zune. Microsoft is saying it has deferred over $1 billion in revenue from sales of Windows and Office to Q3, which would account for some of that decline, but which must also be taken into consideration when Microsoft inevitably posts a huge increase in Windows income next quarter.

More information to follow in the update later today.

So, maybe the XBox 360 will be a success? ;)

(This has all been handled before, so feel free to skip over it. :) )

Off (current) topic, but I want to say how impressed I am with Microsoft's customer service. I bought a 360 a few months ago after getting that last push from the friendly people here and today, after only very mild use, got the red circle of doom. When I bought the console, I didn't opt to pick up the extended warranty, and wouldn't you know it... approximately 94 day's after my purchase the problem begins out of nowhere. I was amazingly angry, but then came online and saw that the warranty had been extended to a full year for everyone and had a complete turn-around. Quite the relief.

Still, my original 8-bit Nintendo works perfectly after 6 moves and huge amounts of use, while my $400 gaming powerhouse (vastly ventilated and perfectly cared-for) stops working after 3 months. Overall... BAD: how could they put a product out there that, for some, fails every few months?! GOOD: well-done, classy job of taking responsibility.

Michael Corvin 01-25-07 07:28 PM

To be fair there is a LOT more going on inside that $400 powerhouse than the NES. Not an excuse, just an observation.

Exactly. Hey, I'm sure a 10-speed bike ends up in the shop far less than a Mercedes too.

lmao nice one man! did you come up with that off the top of your head?

To be fair my 360 has had tons of use and zero problems, and I'd be willing to bet that I'm the rule rather than the exception.

DJ_Longfellow 01-26-07 07:37 AM

I finally got to play the Crackdown demo. The hour went by pretty fast, so I guess I enjoyed it. The aiming is a little off at time, but it's still pretty good. I like being able to jump high...I didn't build up my throwing power enough though.

Interesting though....I may pick it up.

RichC2 01-26-07 09:27 AM

I know it isn't much, but an Xbox 360 title made the top 10 list in Japan last week, not amazing numbers, but considering the genre and system it's on, not bad.

Jan 15 - 21:

1 .hack//G.U. Vol. 3: Aruku Youna Hayasade PS2 Bandai Namco 136,790 136,790
2 Kaitou Wario the Seven NDS Nintendo 91,249 91,249
3 Shining Force EXA PS2 Sega 72,306 72,306
4 Wii Sports Wii Nintendo 57,418 851,535
5 Hajimete no Wii [Wii Play] Wii Nintendo 45,724 764,813
6 Dragon Shadow Spell PS2 Flight Plan 40,541 40,541
7 Gears of War X360 Epic Games 33,212 33,212
8 Sekaiju no Meikyuu NDS Atlus 32,511 32,511
9 Imasara Hito ni wa Kikenai Otona no Joushikiryoku Training NDS Nintendo 31,753 1,130,647
10 Kawashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nouwo Kitaeru Otona no DS Training NDS Nintendo 29,626 3,868,279

Of course, had this been a few weeks ago, it would be, at highest, #18 on the list.

edstein 01-26-07 09:53 AM

Why isn't Blue Dragon on that list? I thought it was a hot seller over there.

KurrptSenate 01-26-07 09:56 AM

probably because everyone that is buying it is getting a system with it, and they didn't sell 30,000 systems over there in a week

RichC2 01-26-07 09:57 AM

Blue Dragon was released at the beginning of December, when it sold about 85,000 copies. I'm assuming most X360 owners already own it by now, so it selling > 29,626 copies (to make the list) last week was pretty unlikely.

KurrptSenate 01-26-07 10:00 AM

i saw a bunch of screen shots from that title yesterday for the first time. I still know little to nothing about it, and its gameplay

MS cuts 360 estimates, Xbox division posts $289m loss

Matt Martin 09:02 26/01/2007
Shipment figures reduced to 12m for fiscal year '07

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division has posted a US $289 million (EUR 223.6m) loss for the second quarter - and cut fiscal year estimates for Xbox 360 hardware.

The company now expects to ship a total of 12 million units by the end of June 2007, down from the original estimate of between 13 and 15 million.

"We are just being cautious about the second half," commented Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell to news agency Reuters. "There's a reasonable amount of inventory in the channel."

Despite the US $289 million loss, the Entertainment Devices division was responsible for US $2.63 billion (EUR 2.03) profit during the second quarter.

The Entertainment Devices division not only incorporates the Xbox 360 and software, but also the newly launched Zune media player, PC games, TV platform products, and mobile and embedded devices.

According to Microsoft, repair expenses and the extension of the 360 console warranty from nine months to a year in the US and Canada ate into the division's profitability.

Microsoft posted a revenue increase of US $1 billion (EUR 773m) for the division during the second quarter, with a US $1.3 billion (EUR 1bn) increase for the first half. Revenue for the Xbox and PC game departments grew 76 per cent and 82 per cent, respectively.

Results showed that the company has sold 10.4 million Xbox 360 consoles, as previously revealed by Robbie Bach at this year's CES. The second quarter saw 4.4 million units shipped ended December 31 2006, boosting the first half total to 5.4 million units.

The overall company profit was down to US $2.63 billion (EUR 2.03bn), a drop of 28 per cent, compared to US $3.65 billion (EUR 2.82) in the previous year.

It's really hard to comprehend those numbers. That's a lot of coin being spent of video games.
