It's not passing DSD as is (which requires HDMI 1.2); it's converting it to PCM and passing that.

Hey, that's neat! I have an SACD player and only 4 SACDs

Anyone been having problems with the blu ray drive freezing for like 10-15 seconds during movie playback? I have had this happen on Crank and The Descent but The Prestige played fine.

It's a known issue since 1.50. It seems to have something to do with the network, so disabling the network connection fixes it for most who have the problem. Have you updated to 1.54 yet? There are reports that 1.54 fixed it for some.

I haven't had it happen yet, but I have the 20GB model (most affected have the 60GB version).

cultshock 03-02-07 09:50 PM

I have 1.54 and still see freezes when the network connection is enabled. Disconnecting seems to do the trick though, but I hope that Sony will fix this.

So basically the same thing that happens with 6 channel analog, right? The player does the decoding and outputs PCM. I have around 50 SACDs and having this feature gives me a second player. Heck, my Denon is probably out of the living room all together. I will upconvert with my Toshiba A2 and be able to watch whatever I want now in HD DVD or Blu-ray.

I ran the PS3 for about 12 hours today. Downloaded stuff and watched 3 BD movies. Never had any freezes or problems with any of the movies. If it happens though I will remember to turn off the network connection. I'm using it with a Linksys router, BTW. Not sure if that matters. I had lots of trouble in the past with other brands of routers.

I'm surprised how quiet this thing is for a game console. Its a bit louder than my Toshiba A2, but probably only half the noise of the Xbox360.

BBEANLPHIE 03-02-07 10:37 PM

Strange this is I have the 20gb model and it has happen to me a few times already and I have the newest update. I keep saying to myself its only a layer change as the DVD's had the same problem with dual layers when first released but when I count 15 seconds of me starting at a frozen scene during a important part of a movie it worries me lol

Harry Lime 03-03-07 12:03 AM

I had a dvd freeze on me a couple of nights ago I thought it was defective but I guess it was because of the new firmware. thanks guys

Picked it up today. Very good for what it is and more challenging than I was led to believe. Sure you can just cruise through it, but the eat or be eaten actually can get very tough since you can only move by tilting the controller. The tilt control actually works very well, but gives you enough of a swimming feel where trying to eat some of the bigger creatures before they eat you is tough. Its a really great way to chill and kill an hour and I see myself easily getting $8 worth of play out of it. I think there are 5-6 different creatures you can become.

This actually seems more like a game Nintendo would release than Sony and the tilt control on it works much better than most tilt controlled Wii games I have played.

Noonan 03-04-07 10:56 AM

I agree with darkside. Flow isn't anything amazing but it's really fun to play around with. Worth the $8 IMO. I'm sure I'll get a good few hours out of it before it gets old or boring.

I opened/hooked up my PS3 last night, after I got home from seeing Zodiac. So far, after playing a couple of games (Resistance and Virtua Fighter 5,) and playing one Blu-ray disc (The Prestige,) for a few minutes, I'm quite impressed. I like the simplicity of the design, but I wish some of the menus weren't so complicated. The keyboard will also take a little while to get used to, but that's a minor problem.

I really liked the games that I played, but I figured Resistance would have looked a bit better. I pride myself on not being a 'graphics whore,' and I'm always the one saying that graphics don't make a game good, but I couldn't help but notice the mediocre visuals. Then again, I had read that the graphics were underwhelming and that it was rushed. Other than that, what I played made it look like an incredible game. It's hard as Hell, that's for sure. The great framerate also deserves mention.

Virtua Fighter 5 is excellent as well, but it would've been a lot better with online play. Right now, I have that and Dark Kingdom rented, as Resistance is the only game I've actually purchased. I'm considering buying Virtua Fighter, but I'm not sure yet. I've never been a big fighting game fan, but I've always liked the VF series.

As of right now, I don't have it connected to the internet, but I'll have to do that tomorrow.

Also, I decided to take my one PS3 back to EB. Their warranty was shit and I couldn't see myself paying $100 per year for a shitty warranty where I would just get refurbs back in a defective console exchange. I went with Future Shop, where their warranty is only $130 for 3 years. They'll ship it away 3 times and, if a 4th defect arises, then they'll replace the console.

So, has Sony announced about offering DEMOS through the service for the downloaded games (Flow, Qbert, Tekken, etc)

Liver&Onions 03-05-07 06:16 PM

On tonights episode of Heroes they give a sneak preview of Heavenly Sword...

Check it.

Sony always does little irritating things that drive me crazy. I bought the memory card adapter tonight thinking I could copy my save for Symphony of the Night off the PS3 and play it in the bedroom on my PS1. No dice. The saving only works one way. Thanks for nothing Sony, can I get my $15 back? Actually I am going to get it back.

Anyone know a way to copy PS1 & 2 saves off of the PS3?

The quick fix seems to be turning off the wireless connection. Mine is off and I haven't encountered a freeze so far.

Pretty simple clip but it looked good and I'm happy to be interested in a PS3 game. Each game I look forward to makes the money spent a bit easier to deal with.

XavierMike 03-06-07 08:25 AM

Looks like there are going to be new map packs for Resistance.

Draven 03-06-07 08:59 AM

I was watching Heroes and said to my wife "Well, that's a PS3 - what game is that?" because it actually looked cool. For a second I thought it was God of War II, but it was obviously a female character. Looks neat.

DJ_Longfellow 03-06-07 10:01 AM

So, am I the only one who feels like Sony should offer DEMOS for the downloaded games (FLOW, QBERT, TEKKEN). I see no one complain about this (except myself). Am I just SPOILED by XBOX Live?

They are also supposed to release WARHAWK as a downloaded multiplayer ONLY game. I probably won't pay for that either (w/o a demo)

Well, they've done it for some of their other games like Lemmings and Blast Factor, so it may just be a matter of time before the new games get demos.

XavierMike 03-06-07 10:35 AM

Yeah,

Maybe after the rumored update, Thursday.

Look up to post 313 - it was Heavenly Sword. :)

My wife had the same exact reaction! And I thought it was God of War 2 as well.

Wick 03-06-07 03:18 PM

What I've seen of Heavenly Sword looks badass. I'm most-likely going to buy it when it comes out.
