Here is a video of how the Wii controls will work with Mortal Kombat. It looks pretty cool actually plus it supports the classic and Gamecube controllers if you want to play in a more traditional way.

That actually looks pretty interesting, but, I wonder if it will really translate into being that easy to control.

Well, I downloaded the News Channel at lunch today and I have to say I am very impressed. For those of you that don't think you will use it that much, I think that will change over time.
It is great to be able to read the news on a 60" screen. It is clear, legible and there seems to be a lot of content, at least in the Sports area. I see myself using this feature quite a lot. And it's all free baby. Chris |

A couple of weeks / month ago, someone posted a website that was Wiicentric. Meaning that if I saved that website as one of my favorites on my Wii, the layout of the website was perfect for the Wii and it had great links to other websites that optimized your Wii viewing. For example, there are webpages out there that have links to music that you can play live on your Wii. I thought I had bookmarked the page a while back, but I cannot find it now. Can anybody summarize the helpful Wii pages out there? Thanx Chris So, does anybody remember the page I am talking about? Thanx Chris |
I haven't downloaded the news channel, but I can't see using it much as it's too much hassle to power up the Wii, put the TV and receiver on the right inputs, hit the button on my s-video selector for the Wii etc. vs sitting down at the PC and having CNN.com up in 5 seconds flat.

Not that i'm lazy, just that other members of the family need the TV, so i can't be hogging up the TV for reading news, which i can do else where... Also, i don't think still pictures/text are good for long term displays on large screen TVs. I don't wanna change the bulb or TV yet. Nontheless, it's good to know and good to have :) For instance, the wife wants to know the weather forecast while i'm playing the Wii... Oh wait, can you pause the game channel and go to another channel? |
Actually, now that i asked the question about switching channels, how do you return to the Wii menu when you're done playing a GC game?
Last night, i was playing Windwaker on the Wii, after saving the game and select NO to continue, i got the game's title screen. I hit the home button on the wiimote, nothing happened, got bunches of blue lights... I hit the reset button on the Wii, nothing happened. So, i rejected the disc and then hit the reset button... Still, there gotta be a quicker and better way? Maybe i should read the manual... |
That's it, thank you very much! Chris |

Problem with the Weather Channel on the wii is that it isn't current, even more so for people like me that don't leave Wiiconnect24 on (Wii stays too warm, and wastes a lot of power--especially since I haven't turned it on in about 3 weeks, no point to have it in that standby mode). |
Well I just finished downloading the news channel and I'm very impressed. I love being able to sit back and relax on my couch while surfing the news. The little song that plays when you select the channel is very cool. Reading and selecting the different news stories is all very easy. Also the globe view is really slick. Nice job Nintendo. :)

Can someone explain the WiiConnect24 standby mode? I saw it under the options, but have no idea what it does.
I don't want the WiiConnect always on b/c I don't always have my pc on, so it wouldn't be able to connect to the net anyways. Plus I heard that the system gets hot with it on. At first I had WiiConnect set to 'off', but when I first tried dling the news channel it gave me an error... so it looks like it has to be set to on (at least to dl it for the first time). |
Taken from Nintendo's website:
The Wii console can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. The WiiConnect24 service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if the system is idle. When you turn your Wii on each day, you'll never know what to expect! (Internet connection required). Green light = Wii is on. :) Red light = Wii is off and WiiConnect24 is also off. Orange light = Wii is off and WiiConnect24 is enabled. So far I've had WiiConnect24 enabled for the majority of the time since I've owned it. I've had no problems at all with my Wii. Also I have my Wii hooked up through a wireless network, so even if my PC is off, the Wii is still connected to the net. So for example today when I woke up, the blue light of the Wii disk drive was blinking, letting me know that I had a new message from someone. So I turned the Wii on and saw that Nintendo had sent me a message telling me that the News Channel was ready to download. I think the WiiConnect24 is a great feature of the Wii. Currently you can send and receive emails, use the News, Internet, Weather channels, and share Mii's. I can't wait to see future games take advantage of it. Plus it's always cool seeing the blue light on the disk drive when you receive a message! :D |
So what does the 'standby' mode do?
|
So whats the next channel?
|
hopefully the DS demo channel.

From Computer and Video Games:
Nintendo to offer original game downloads for Wii Friday 26-Jan-2007 11:46 AM CVG gets Nintendo's response to 'New Game Channel' rumours A statement made by Hudson Entertainment's director of marketing, John Lee, in an interview with Game Informer, sparked a rumour that Nintendo could be making a new 'Games Channel' for Wii through which it will deliver new downloadable games. When asked if Hudson plans to release any original content through the Virtual Console, Lee responded: "Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No. "However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer." Curious as to what he may have meant by that, CVG contacted Nintendo and got this response: "Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service. "We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop." For those of you who don't know, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, spoke of such a development tool at various games events last year, allowing low-cost game production for Wii. Anyone who got hooked on Geometry Wars on 360 knows how exciting this prospect is. It's currently unknown when the proposed original game content will be made available to download, although it is unlikely that they'll be delivered through the Virtual Console. |
The news channel is really well done and might actually help me read the news more often.
|
I love both the News Channel and the Forecast Channel (and the beta version of the Internet Channel, for that matter.) Nintendo has really gotten it together this "generation."

Got the news channel today. It is pretty decent. Still doubt I'll use it much for the reasons posted earlier, but it is a neat feature.
