It could either be amazing or an absolute joke.
I'm, sadly, leaning toward the latter.

i can't remember if this site has been mentioned yet on dvdtalk, but check out www.wiisave.com to download save games to a SD card.
I rent most of my wii games so its nice to have everything unlocked and ready to play (Rayman I'm looking at you) when friends come over.

MK64 VC might be enough to get me turn my Wii back on. Zelda's been... underwhelming and I haven't touched it (or the 360, to be fair) in close to a month. I've got Wii Play on order (along with Wario Ware) so I'll pick those up in a few weeks.
Chris: As per controllers. My reco:
You need at least two Wiimotes. A third one is OK, but if you're going to get a third you might as well get a fourth for tennis. None of the other Wii Sports games require a third controller, and I wouldn't recommend playing any Wii game in anything past 2-player split screen if you want to actually see stuff.
The nunchuck you need a second of for boxing. I don't think we'll ever see a game that requires 3 or 4 nunchuckd.
A lot of VC games work OK with the Wiimote but it gets annoying. Getting a Classic Controller and a GC controller should solve those problems, plus let you play any GC games by yourself.
At the very minimum, I'd recommend: 2 Wiimotes, 1 Classic or GC controller
For extensive multiplayer, I'd recommend: 2 Wiimotes, 2 nunchucks, 1 Classic and 1 Classic or GC controller
The max I would recommend would be: 4 Wiimotes, 2 nunchucks, 2 Classics and 2 Classic or GC controllers
As far as each game's requirement, check the back of the box.

Thanx for the info. I downloaded about 10 covers yesterday with the back information and am starting a spreadsheet with that information. If I'm understanding correctly the Wii comes with 1 Wiimote & 1 nunchuck. I also ordered 1 more of each. I also have 2 Wavebirds that I didn't sell with my Gamecube. I guess those can take the place of the Classic controllers, which is better anyways, since I don't think I've ever played with a Classic controller. What system did those come with?

I finally got my hands on a Wii tonight due to a co-worker of mine who happens to work part time at EB. I'm about three months late to the party, I know. Then again, I was about 13 months late to the XBOX 360 party.
I hooked up the Wii tonight and set some stuff up, but I probably won't start playing it until this weekend, but I do have some questions.
1) Are the component cables worth it? I've been browsing through this thread and seeing that the S-Video cables might be the better way to go as supposedly the component quality isn't something to write home about.
2) What accessories should I consider picking up besides an SD card? For an example of what I'm looking for, I currently own three wireless controllers, the remote, and the wireless adapter for my 360 which I just got back in November.
3) Besides Zelda, are there any games that are must buy purchases or should I wait until the "bigger" Nintendo games start coming out for the console?

1.) This question is the new "BB or MS warranty for 360?" question. Component is night and day different over composite.
2.) If you are going to d/l games, the Classic Controller is a must, as well as Wii Points, to me the GCN controller does not suffice due to button layout.
3.) Everyone around here(lately) seems to agree on Excite Truck. It is a tremendous game, but like all launch titles(save for Zelda), a bit on the thin side. Rayman is also excellent. Neither are worth $50, IMO, but to me can be excused since they were launch titles. They are both a blast to play. If you can find coupons and/or discounts I recommend those two.

1) see Michael Corvin's reply
2) since you have 3 Xbox 360 controllers, I'm guessing you have friends around enough to regularly get in some multiplayer. There's been a fair amount of discussion on the right number of controllers to get, but the majority seem to think it's best to go with a total of 4 remotes, 2 nunchuks and 1 or 2 classic controllers, depending on if you want multiplayer in your NES & SNES games. And as far as an SD card, I'd got so far as to say it's not all that necessary. I haven't done anything with mine. That might change if I get a game that lets me play custom music, but for now it's just sitting there.
3) I'd say Zelda's the only 'must buy' out of the 10 or so games I've played. Wii Play comes out in 3 weeks and is pretty much a no-brainer if you need another remote, seeing as it's $50 and comes with one. Outside of those, there are several games that are a lot of fun and are probably worth picking up if you have the extra cash or find a good deal and are just looking for something to play. Rayman, Trauma Center, Elebits and WarioWare would all fall into this category. I haven't played ExciteTruck or Madden 07, but I'm guessing they would as well. You've definitely got the AAA titles covered with Wii Sports and Zelda though.

If you plan on lengthy play time, you might want to consider some rechargeable batteries. I believe there is a 3rd party charge station/rechargable pack being released soon, but I'd wait for reviews first.
Also, don't forget to register your Wii at www.nintendo.com to activate your warranty.

For batteries, I've been using a $10 generic bunch from Wal-Mart. I think the brand is "Digital" and they come in a pack of 4 with a charger. I've used them in my cameras for years. Certainly not bad for the $$$.

Thanks dude! Actually, i found the silver ones you were talking about and yes, there's a section on hooking the Wii on-line. Well, i don't know why they have to print that in a different manual. Maybe making the manual thinner? I know most people don't read them

I still haven't really read my car manual... The temperature control buttons are just educated guesses (well, most of them are common sense). Well, as long as i know how to defog the windshield and the rear window, i'm fine. I guess same as the Wii.
Do any of you know the # of Wiis connected to the net? It shouldn't be too hard to estimate, since we know the total # of Wiis sold...

i haven't register mines yet... too lazy to look up the serial#, i know it's on the console somewhere, but too lazy. Hooking up the Wii (and clean up the dust and wires behind the 56" DLP) took me about 30 minutes. And of course, i still haven't get it connected to the net (working on a good/cheap way to setup a wireless network, yes, up to this point, only my PC hooked on-line).
thanks for the reminder

If your TV has component inputs and available, then hell yeah. The cable is less than $20 anyway, got mines for $13 shipped.
2) What accessories should I consider picking up besides an SD card? For an example of what I'm looking for, I currently own three wireless controllers, the remote, and the wireless adapter for my 360 which I just got back in November.
Can't say much, but you'll definitely need a 2nd wiimote...

If you can't get a Wii, then you should wait, cause besides Zelda, i don't see any other big name Nintendo games coming out yet. Wario doesn't count...
My original plan was to wait for more titles if i can't score a Wii using the CC coupon (which combined with other savings, i got my Wii for $12, taxed). Hey, that's the beauty of waiting 3 months! If you missed out the launch period party, then you're already tested for patience. And good things happen when you don't rush things

I got a Wii last night.
I had $300 sitting in my checking account from a refund check I got from UNLV and since my co-worker called me telling me he had one with my name on it I said why the hell not.
Granted, I still have a MacBook to pay off, but why not be in debt even more?

Nintendo's Wii to provide AP news
By CURT WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jan 25, 7:53 AM ET
SEATTLE - Rabid video gamers could get some help keeping in touch with the outside world this weekend as Nintendo Co. launches an online news service through its popular Wii console.
The Wii News Channel, scheduled to debut Saturday, will primarily feature top news stories and photographs from The Associated Press.
Consoles with a broadband Internet connection and the Opera Web browser will be able to access the free news channel, which will offer AP news in multiple languages. Japanese-language news will come from a separate agency.
There were no immediate plans to sell advertising space, said Perrin Kaplan, vice president for marketing at Nintendo's U.S. headquarters in Redmond.
News will be displayed through an interactive map, which users can navigate with the Wii's wireless controller, Kaplan said.
"The beauty of it is it zooms in and out of areas of the world," she said. "So if you really want to focus on regional news or national news versus international, you just blow up the map of the U.S."
The AP has a two-year contract to provide news and photos to Nintendo and would like to provide multimedia in the future, said Jane Seagrave, vice president of new media markets for the New York-based news cooperative.
"It's a very innovative new application of what we're doing generally, which is to try to get our content to new audiences on new platforms," Seagrave said.
The AP will supply news for the Wii in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, and Swiss-German, Seagrave said. The Japanese news company Goo will supply Nintendo's Japanese-language news, Kaplan said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Wii has been a surprise hit for Nintendo as it competes with Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles.
A recent report from the market research firm NPD Group said the Wii has sold 1.1 million units since it was released in the U.S. on Nov. 19, with 604,200 of those units sold in December.
"The Nintendo Wii demographic is definitely a wider demographic than your traditional hardcore gamer," said Billy Pidgeon, a video game industry analyst at IDC in New York. "It kind of makes sense for other types of content to be made available on the Wii."
Nintendo isn't the only company hoping to offer more from video game consoles with online connections. The Xbox scored an early hit with its Xbox Live online gameplay system and has since begun offering more perks to Internet-connected users.
