Yikes! But I can see that happening. Like Twilight Princess. That pre-order was up forever. Several stores around here had it offered, but they have since went out of business before the game came out. Then GS and EB had only the stock they pre-ordered. That wasn't a smart move for non-limited item. Especially since the big retailers order tons of games.

I haven't pre-ordered a game since Wind Waker when you got the Bonus disc with the N64 Zelda Game. I used to preorder for specialty games like Castlevania Chronicles for the PS1 which ended up being rare and some dreamcast games that ended up being in limited quantity.

Same here on the pre-order thing, basically. I pre-ordered Gears & Zelda: TP, but only because it was a trade in bonus offer(didn't actually pay for either). The ony game I willingly put money down was Wind Waker. Since then, nada, until WiiPlay. I did throw down $5 on that when it was announced because I knew with the Wiimote being a hot item they would go quick.

Ok, fess up, I know some of you are holding "Halo Camp-out Parties" in front of C.C and B.B so you can pawn them off at $200 a whack.

Preorders are worthwhile with consoles at launch, but not for games unless you get some kind of preorder bonus.

You guys obviously weren't around for the Nintendo Entertainment System's early days. Trying to find Super Mario Brothers or later on Double Dragon was like trying to find a TMX Elmo in early December.

I picked up Super Mario Bros 3 on launch day with no problems at a K-mart. Same with all the other big games.
Maybe it was just easier in West Virginia than in urban areas.

And isn't this all a moot point as there weren't chain game stores or preorders back in 1986 when SMB came out anyway?

The only game I remember being notoriously hard to find was Grand Theft Auto 3. I found out about the game a few months after it came out but couldn't find it for weeks. But that was more because the game was a sleeper hit and not a huge franchise (yet). The buzz was bigger than they expected.
