Ebay idiots... Halo 3
Ebay
Yeah, you wouldn't want to walk into a Gamestop and have them push the pre-order on a game that doesn't come out for 10 more months! Get it from some schmuck on Ebay for more than you would pay retail!

I don't get the deal with pre-ordering games and movies unless you get some sort of extra goodies with it. I've worked at two Best Buy's and both have had hundreds of copies of the big game releases (Halo 1 and 2, Madden, World of Warcraft: BC... etc) that took days to sell out. I really doubt Halo 3 will sell out. In fact, I will guarantee you could come in a week after it's released and find multiple copies sitting on shelves.

Gamestop and their ilk are squarely to blame for crap like this. Every time I walk into one of their stores they insist that if I don't pre-order "X" game I will not be able to find it for weeks/months. One guy even told me last year that Nintendo purposely short-ships their games to create false-hype when I told him I wasn't going to pre-order Super Princess Peach. Yeah, that turned out to be a rare game. It depresses me that these stores are still in business.

Totally. In 20 odd years of gaming I've never once not been able to find a game I wanted.
Preorders are worthwhile with consoles at launch, but not for games unless you get some kind of preorder bonus.

Not to mention having to put up with employees and customers in the game store TWICE.

True, I just don't like handing over money for nothing.
The second point is the main one for me as I hate setting foot in game stores. I preordered my Wii just to be safe and use store credit from trade ins, but I hope to not set foot in a game store anytime soon (haven't since picking up the Wii on Nov. 19th).

well, i can easily understand the hostility, or the want to not set foot in a game store, considering the negative situations i've been through. I have a friend who is a manager whom i started pre-ordering games from. If it weren't for that manager-friend, I'm sure I wouldn't pre-order games either.
I will say, from all the free sh!t i've gotten and re-sold, its easily worth it

Wow, $25 for a pre-order? o.o I thought it was only $5 dollars. If anyone's worried about full MSRP, try Best Buy's price match. Doesn't apply to online prices or webstores though.
We bought GC Twilight Princess at BB then a few days later, Target had it for 39.99. So we brought the sales circular in and got a 110 % price difference.
