PSP or Xbox 360
I feel the need for a new "toy" and I'm trying to decide which new game system to get (if either, since I'm being ambivalent about it I might not get either)...
PSP advantages
- cheaper
- portable (not a big deal for me though)
- seems to have a better overall selection of games and they are usually cheaper than 360 games (esp. used)
360 advantages
- already have an Xbox/HDTV/surround system so direct replacement w/ plenty of games to play
- Better "experience"/don't run the risk of going blind looking at such a small screen
(hopefully that makes sense)
- I prefer FPS and the 360 seems to have a better selection than the PSP (are there any FPS or are they all 3rd person?)
any input from the peanut gallery
BTW it's extremely unlikely I'll get anything like this for Christmas so waiting for that is not really an issue...

Go with the 360. I own both the 360 and PSP as well as a Wii and a PS2. The PSP gets the least play out of the 4. Comically the real only time I use the PSP is when I'm using the porcelain throne, it's better than reading in the bathroom :

I have a PSP and it saved my life when I was touring across Canada. I was able to play tiger woods golf on the long drives and then use the web browser to steal wireless internet signals and download naked pics from my wife...I voted for a 360 though, because that's what I really want right now. There are definitely some great games for the PSP though. I'm going to change my vote to 'buy both'

If FPS and other shooters are your favorite genre, then the choice should be obvious. Xbox is the king of that genre. You said you already have an HDTV and surround sound, so you are ready to maximize your 360 gaming.
FPS on the 360:
1. Call of Duty 2 and 3
2. Condemned
3. FEAR
4. Rainbow Six: Vegas
5. Bioshock (coming out Spring '07)
6. Halo 3 (comes out sometime next year)
TPS on the 360:
1. Gears of War
2. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
3. Lost Planet (coming out next month)
4. possibly Alan Wake (I am not sure if that is a shooter or not. What genre is that game? It is being made by the people that did the Max Payne games, so I just assume Alan Wake will be a shooter too.)
5. John Woo's Stranglehold (comes out Spring '07)
There's probably more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I really haven't touched my PSP much, after I beat me and my katamari.
When my Ipod broke, I got a gig card for 30, and it absolutely saved my life, music wise.
I haven't played/touched it since I got another Ipod. I do want to get the near Metal Gear, though

That's sort of asking if you should get a DS Lite or a PS3. Two radically different things.
Do you have any of the old game systems? I'd get a PS2 and a DS Lite if you don't have either.
And then a 360.

Or get a $30 GC with a 360 purchase and game at CC. Bring your total to $500 and you'll get a $50 GC.
TRU is giving away a $100 GC for a 360 purchase.
Or do BB as mentioned above.
Target has 10% off + free ship offers in its weekly emails. They're also giving away Ghost Recon with a 360 purchase in-store (not an awesome deal though as GR is going to be on sale for $29 soon).
Voted for the Xbox, obviously. As far as I'm concerned, the DS is the only handheld option worth thinking about.

Since portable isn't a big deal to you then I would say get a 360.
I love my PSP now that there are alot of good games for it and more coming. After it was released last March, I sold it a few months after and didn't think I would ever own one again. In the past few months some pretty solid games have come out for it -- Metal Gear PO, SOCOM 2, Killzone, Dungeon Siege, Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins, GTA: VCS, Lumines II, Gitaroo-Man Lives, & Power Stone Collection. There are others I'm probably missing. But it being portable is a big deal to me because I mostly use it at work or sometimes I'll use it at home if my Wife is watching her shows on TV and I can't play my PS2.
If cost is an issue for you then I would definitely go with a PSP. The core pack runs $199 or for $50 more you can get the value pack with a game and 1gb memory stick. New games run about $40 but they have some GH titles out for $20 and I even saw some PSP games at BB going for $10. If you go the 360 route you're looking at $400(I wouldn't even consider the core) and $40-$60 for games.
You really can't go wrong with either system you choose. I would say if cost isn't an issue, get a 360 and if it is, get a PSP.

I'm one of the PSP's biggest supports here, maybe the biggest, and I voted 360. I love the PSP and think it has some really great games and is a very impressive piece of technology. But the advantage is that it's portable. I bring it with me on trips and places I'll be witing a long time (my daughter's gymnastic class ... ugh). The games are a great divesion and the ability to watch movies on the go is very nice as well. If that's not the big factor for you, I'd definately go with the 360. Got mine a couple of weeks ago and just love it. There are so many deals right now at the stores this week and next. Go for it.

360. The PSP is the only of the current consoles and portables I'd advise people to stay away from...for gaming anyway. It's a great multimedia device, but close to worthless for gaming IMO.
99% of the games are either ports or spinoffs of PS2 games, and one might as well play them on the PS2. Combine that with the analog nub and d-pads sucking, and it's just pretty awful for gaming IMO.
With the 360 you get top of the line graphics and a solid line up of exclusive games you can't get anywhere else.

Get the 360. Do what I just did. You'll still end up spending $400, but you'll have a 360 system and at least $100 to spend on games.
Buy the 360 at Circuit City and PM it against TRU.
Factoring in the gift certificates and eventually selling the xbox, I figure it'll cost me ~$200 to upgrade to the 360 system.

- If you can find the CC flyer that shows the gc offers in the store, buy it in -store, use the flyer to get a $25/$50 gc (depending on if you spend over $500), & go to customer service to pricematch it against TRUs ad (a $100 gc with the purchase of a 360 system).
- If you can't find the flyer (they didn't have any in mine), go to a kiosk and buy it online. Here's the link for the rebate. Go to customer service to pick up the 360, and then have them PM it to TRU. You'll have to wait for the standard 2-3 months for the $25/$50 gc.
- Sell your Xbox system to defray the cost. Depending on the games that you sell with it (that aren't backwards compatible with the 360), you can recoup $60-$100+.

There's like 2-3 PSP games I want to play (and hell one of them is a PS1 port), and this is from the guy that until recently owned 9 consoles.
I figure I'll get a PSP when someday they are like under $100.
Get the 360. Or even better, a DS lite if you don't already have one.

Overall I think I have decided to go w/ the 360 (if I decide to do anything, they're still pretty expensive [esp the games
]). Thanks everyone... keep the opinions coming though if you have them.
