Idk. It seems logical to me that they would have both on the same day, but I guess your scenario is easily possible.

Exactly. That's why I have a shipping box on it's way from Microsoft as we speak. Hopefully my third machine will be the one that lasts (*sigh*)

I haven't bothered checking lately, so I was wondering if there is a fix, or ever going to be one, for error messages received continually upon startup? (The single red light variety specifically.)

Did anyone else get a system update last night? I didn't notice any changes. Major Nelson didn't give any details either.

I got the update - not sure what it did though. It would be nice to get some info as to what the updates actually do.

So that explains the dashboard update message when I logged in yesterday.

The GoW update only came when you tried to launch GoW.

I was wondering what the other update was as I hadn't read anything about one coming. Thanks for that post, Shagrath.

I've never played it so I have a question. I love the original Castlevania & Castlevania: IV(and enjoyed II & III). Other than those four, the only other title I've played in the franchise was Circle of the Moon on the GBA which I wasn't a a big fan of(and Castlevania 64, but we will ignore that one). On to the question, is SOTN more like the original titles on the NES/SNES or the recent GBA/DS titles?

Sub-question, what other GBA/DS titles in the series would you recommend based on the paragraph above?
My favorite old Castlevania was #2, due to the open endedness of it. Symphony of the Night was the first Metroidvania title, but feels more like the older titles. There's just an all out classic feel to the game, and it is an absolute blast to play (plus, it's rather lengthy). The recent GBA/DS games are kind of spawns of SotN, tho Circle of the Moon was, imo, a bit of a misstep. I was a fan of Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, though they're very similar games.

I just started Portrait of Ruin so I can't really comment yet.

Also, this is more an all consoles note but ah well:

Wii Rules Japan in 2006
Nintendo takes top honors in next generation race.
by Anoop Gantayat

January 9, 2007 - Despite promises of a million systems at Japanese retail by the end of 2006, Japanese publisher Enterbrain reports today that Sony has managed to sell just 466,716 PS3 units to Japan. This figure covers the period from the Japanese launch on 11/11 to the end of the year.

In comparison, Enterbrain reports that Nintendo managed to sell 989,118 Wii units from the 12/2 launch to the end of the year, with the number quickly jumping over the million mark for a total of 1,135,671 units by 1/7.

The firm didn't provide 2006 results for the Xbox 360, but did list the system as having sold a total of 290,467 units total from its 12/10/2005 launch to the end of 2006. In particular, spurred by the release of Blue Dragon, Microsoft managed to sell 99,798 360 units in December 2006 alone -- the highest month ever for the system (yes, that includes the launch).

Portable gaming has been Japan's big star over the past couple of years. Enterbrain reports total Japanese DS and DS Lite sales from 2004 until the end of 2006 as 13,950,000 units. The PSP, while nowhere near the DS, has managed a respectible 4,510,000 units since its launch.

In the case of the Wii, IGN has had trouble finding a system since launch, making today's reports of a million plus Wiis sold to Japanese consumers all the more impressive.

The PS3, on the other hand, has been readily available since the New Year began. We were able to find a used 60 gig unit today at a major retail for $50 less than the new selling price. This would suggest that the lack of sales is due to more than just supply constraints.
Impressive for a system that, on average, sold less than 16000 units per month. It isn't going to win the war with those numbers, but.. at least it is a sign of life.

Thanks for the Castlevania feedback Rich. I wonder how they will do a demo of the game. First level or two? I'm definitely interested. Sounds like I should revisit the franchise on the DS.

So with all of the Apple hype, I have a question regarding the 360. As far I know, you can stream certain video types using WMP11 without needing Media Centre. If you have WMC, there are hacks that allow you to stream pretty much all video types (like xvid, etc). Is there a way to stream xvid, etc without having WMC?

With TVersity uPnP server I can stream all sorts of video types (including MPEG, XVid, Divx, etc.) to my 360 without the need for WMC OR Media Center... just WinXP.

I recommend TVersity as well, works well and transcodes most things I've thrown at it pretty well. A bit testy at times tho.

Is it difficult to setup? When i installed MP11 suddenly i stopped being able to stream things from my computer running XP and following some of the directions to share my media library so far hasn't worked. A simpler solution and being able to stream more things would be awesome.

With your 360 running, go into MP11 under the sharing tab and you should see the 360 there as an option to allow sharing. I have WMC and can access my music, pictures and, video either way. Another nice benefit with WMC is I can also stream XM radio from my online account.

TVersity sounds interesting. Where can I get it? I did a quick search, but I am at work and most sites are getting blocked because they are blogs.

That is what i did and see the icon for the 360 and it has a green check mark next to it but on the 360 i still don't see the computer as an option to stream music and such.

I'm not 100% sure my 360 was turned on when i worked through those options so i will run through them again when i get home this evening and am downloading the Gears maps.

So if I understand correcty the media is on your PC. The Xbox 360 can read the media from your pc and display it by connecting to TVersity. At no time is the media on the xbox itself. Is all that correct?

If you are playing a movie or song can you stop and play it from the xbox 360?

Yes, that's correct. It streams from your computer.

You can do Music and Pictures with Windows Media Connect.

You can do Music, Pictures, and Videos (in .wmv format) in Windows Media Player 11.

You can do Music, Pictures, and Videos (in .mpeg, .wmv, .avi) in TVersity. (This works by transcoding the .avi into a .wmv on the fly and streaming the .wmv to your X360, it requires a little PC horsepower, so be warned.)

You still need Windows Media Center Edition to use the full Xbox360 Media Center (Extender) though.
