I'd do that too, especially if I was at a big box store. You need to nip this ridiculous behavior in the bud.

By having more people camping out than necessary at your store? :hscratch:

ChrisHicks 11-15-06 08:01 AM

a question about dumb people. if a store puts up a sign that they have a maximum of 30 items why do 200 people line up for it?

Um, because they're dumb?

Bingo. Same thing happened at the Best Buy I waited at for a 360. Before the manager left for the night before he told us exactly how many they had and put a sign on the door. 26 systems and there were still about 70-80 people waiting taking their chances on false hope.

They could be hoping for stupid manager like the one at the (Southfield, MI) Best Buy who basically said "screw you" to those of us who had waited overnight for the 360 and just started handing out tickets to anyone who was able to run up and get close to him.

If someone spends two days sitting outside and gets nothing, they are less likely to do it again.

From my wife's friend:

When I left work last night, I saw people camped out in tents in front of the Richfield Best Buy... waiting in line for Playstation 3 that comes out on Friday. I couldn't believe they were going to stay there for 3 days just to get it... CRAZY!

gmal2003 11-15-06 10:24 AM

From the sounds of things, Im gonna show up Thursday morning and everywhere will be packed. Ill then say o well, and start shopping for the rest of my stuff for my home theater project (which is why i was gonna ebay a PS3, I'll still have enough dough but anyway). Then Ill try to go to a store with no line structure and do a mad dash Mike Alstott run to the PS3 when they open. if that doesnt work, I guess Ill have more saving to do to pay off the few hundreds of dollars that I dont have in cash for my HT.

Sony Plans 500 PS3 For Taiwanese Launch

Following the announcement that the PlayStation 3 would launch in Hong Kong and Taiwan on November 17th, the same day as the North American launch, an article on technology website DigiTimes suggests that only 500 units of the console will be available on day one.

The information reportedly comes from the Taiwanese branch of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong (SCEH), which is organizing a launch ceremony in downtown Taipei where 150 consoles will be made available. An additional 350 units are to be sold through thirty-five selected retail outlets – each getting only ten units each. These include seven Tsann Kuen electronics stores, eight Fnac chain stores and Sony’s own franchise stores.

As previously announced, only the larger 60GB version of the console will be launched initially, with the 20GB version due in December. The 60GB version will be priced at TW$17,980 ($545) and the 20GB version at TW$14,980 ($454).

The news follows suggestions yesterday from an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets that Sony’s day one allocations for the PlayStation 3 in North America could be as low as 150,000 to 200,000 units. Proportional to the size of its market, the Taiwanese allocation would be generally comparable to these figures.

Wow, only 500 for a country that has a population of 23,036,087 (July 2006 est.)

Age structure:

0-14 years: 19.4% (male 2,330,951/female 2,140,965)
15-64 years: 70.8% (male 8,269,421/female 8,040,169)

There going to be some rioting going on in Taipei! ;)

Ziff Davis To Discontinue U.S. Official PlayStation Magazine

U.S. game magazine (EGM, Games For Windows) and website (1UP.com) firm the Ziff Davis Game Group has announced that it will discontinue publication of the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine after the January 2007 issue.

A statement from the company explains: "The Game Group is laser-focused on continuing to expand its rapidly growing digital media presence and on further strengthening its multiplatform properties and powerful integrated network. As such, the Game Group has determined that Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, a property licensed from Sony Computer Entertainment America and limited to print, no longer fits its strategic vision."

According to the firm, Sony Computer Entertainment America will remain a key content and marketing partner for Ziff Davis Game Group, which will cover SCEA's PlayStation 3 and first-party games extensively across all of its media outlets, including EGM, 1UP.com, and GameVideos.com. The Game Group editorial team will also "work closely with SCEA in the development of digital content for the PlayStation Network, accessible only through the PS3."

Due to the long-term decline in the magazine advertising market, Ziff Davis has been gradually transitioning away from print for some time, aggressively building up 1UP.com as its central website portal. The company, which has previously closed magazines including XBN and GMR, most recently posted a quarterly loss of $0.5 million for its game division, citing "a decline in print advertising and circulation revenues", partially offset by online revenue increases.

Scott McCarthy, President of Ziff Davis Game Group, explanied of the overall move: "The powerful online capabilities of the exciting PlayStation 3, coupled with ever- increasing broadband penetration in the U.S., allow for much more efficient distribution of game demos, videos, and trailers. With this next generation of game consoles, the days of having to bundle a disc with a magazine to distribute games-related content are over. And the disc has clearly been a major driver for consumer interest in premium-priced, platform-specific magazines in the past, when the magazine disc was the only way gamers could get such content."

Oh man, I need to swing by there and take some pics. That particular Best Buy gets a TON of traffic and has a very narrow sidewalk. I'm talking 4 feet wide at the most, with the wall of the building and the curb as the edges. They have to be blocking pedestrians to be there.

Did you get in on the pre-order in October? So this was just the confirmation that you would get your system then, right?

KurrptSenate 11-15-06 12:17 PM

well yea. I had pre-orders from 3 separate stores, but was told I had to cancel them (this was weeks after). It was never conveyed to me at the time that I could only have 1 pre-order per district

Since my gf was with me, we had one switched to her name. The other store said that they have enough to fill their pre-orders, but they didn't give me any specific information. I still don't know 100% if I will get both of them. I might have to make a call to their district manager to see WTF is going on with my second pre-order

spainlinx0 11-15-06 12:50 PM

Just went into a Circuit City on my lunch break, and they had signage by the PS3 that said their initial allotment of around 20 or something from the flyer had been cut to around 6-10 and no $500 versions.

Joeboo835 11-15-06 01:06 PM

It just gets better. I hope no one is planning on camping out at a walmart.

A friend of mine who was planning on it called and the "10 minimum" is crap. Two stores he called said they have 4 and 6 available respectively. He was told 6 or 4 people left over will be getting rainchecks.

dvd182 11-15-06 01:17 PM

I would not be surprised at all to see Best Buy's reported 20 per store get slashed as well. It doesn't seem like anybody is getting the amount of systems they thought they would.

KurrptSenate 11-15-06 01:19 PM

if anything, this will sky-rocket the price around the christmas season

ChrisHicks 11-15-06 01:23 PM

Circuit City just did a preorder bundle for the 20Gb version for 745.00. of course the site was trashed and I kept getting errors when trying to add it to my cart. about a minute later it was over.

Joeboo835 11-15-06 01:25 PM

Oh, and of hte 4 the one Walmart had, 2 were 20gig versions

Same with all the walmarts around me. One of them is only getting 3. It's certainly becoming clear that within the last week or so, almost every chain was told their allocation was being reduced, with many of these stores having already printed ads.

At this point, the only way I'd wait over 24 hours for this thing (which seems almost mandatory at this point) would be to eBay it, which is something I'm not interested in doing. It seems that finally my list of "reasons not to get one at launch" has overwhelmed my compulsive need to get everything the first day, which was really the only thing remaining on my "reasons to get one at launch" list. I will leave my pre-order at FYE stand until January, and then if I still don't have one, I'll get my deposit refunded and wait until I can walk into EB and spend my $400 in credit towards one.
