I'd like to see a non-CRT TV that was NOT a fixed-resolution display though. :(

Don't bother waiting, just pipe-dream promises. If the makers of Plasma and LCD had been right, we would have $300 42" LCD's by now, but we don't. It will take a lot longer to see those prices on laser TV's, if they even make it at all.

UncleGramps, was Excite Truck in the Wii kiosk the actual game, or just a demo version?

jeffdsmith 11-08-06 11:40 AM

Pixy: BestBuy has Hewlett-Packard PL4260N 42" Plasma HDTV for $1300 with free shipping a Bush TV Stand for free.

It seemed like the full version to me. I didn't see any indication that it was a demo, although I didn't look at the title screen too closely. This close to launch, I would imagine they'd just use the final retail version of the game.

Oooh, thanks. Though anything I get is going to have to wait until next Friday anyway. I'm actually going by Best Buy after work to pick up Final Fantasy V (yay!) and do my usual window shopping on TVs. I think I'm going to drop by Sam's as well.. Sam's has such an awesome return policy that it might ease me up a bit to pick something there so I can know that I have time to play with it (and if I wanted to be a bastard, take it back later to simply upgrade).

I'm also going to try to pry when Wii accessories are going to be out at Best Buy. :)

I wish you greater luck than I had yesterday. The kid I talked to said they didn't know anything because, "techincally, [they]'ll be able to buy them, so knowing things like launch numbers and dates will make it possible for [them] to call up a buddy and spill the beans." That's paraphrased, but it made very little sense. I just want to know if I can get the controllers and games on the 18th or 17th or 16th or whatever. Anything to alleviate the mad midnight/morning rush.

I tried out the Excite Truck demo at Gamestop today, and it was pretty cool. I'm not sure how I feel about that actual game, but finally holding the Wiimote and seeing how the whole thing works was great. I was the only one in the store when I was playing, but I imagine I had a silly grin on my face the whole time. November 19th can't come soon enough!

NiCK Crush 11-08-06 06:22 PM

none of my local Gamestops/EB Games had kiosks out today... rats...

Wow, I have to give a total different opinion. I've been a pretty huge Nintendo fan with the Cube, GBA and DS. However, I may have to part ways on the Wii. I found Excite Truck to be anything but an enjoyable experience. The Wiimote was a nice size and weight and I like that it shakes slightly when you are over something you can click on, but as a controller I found it very lacking and I found Excite Truck to be nothing more than a Dreamcast game with bad controls. Maybe one of the worst games they could have picked for the demo. Wii Sports would have been a better choice.

The Wiimote is fairly precise, but slight shakes in my hand when pressing a button would cause the cursor to drift just enough for me to click the wrong selection. However, I did see the promise of what this system will offer and I think many will be happy with it. However, I am not going to come aboard anytime soon. Excite Truck was a pure gimmick of a game and the kind of crap I expected from Sony and the Sixaxis, not Nintendo.

Maybe I am just too old to change, but I would not want to play most games with the Wiimote and maybe this is not the system for me.

Like it or not, I think the days of the traditional controller are numbered. I think the Xbox 3 and PS4 will launch with "Wiimote"-like controllers. The X360 and PS3 will most likely be the last consoles to ever use traditional controllers.

Anyway, does anyone know if there will ever be a playable Zelda kiosk? I hope Excite Truck won't be the only game set up to be playable.

For those worried about Wii Sports in a sleeve case...stop by Target! Where they have all the Wii accessories, they also have a DVD of 'Marvel Ult/Tony Hawk' for the Wii. It comes in a Wii style case for the low price of a penny!

I seriously doubt it. The Wii still has the potential (albeit very small) of turning into the next Virtua Boy. There's some games I want to play with a Wiimote. But not every game.

No offense but haven't you been fairly against the Wii from the get go? It's hard to remember everyone's stance so if I'm wrong I apologize in advance, but I thought that was a vibe you have continually put out there, so i will definitely take your mini-review with a grain of salt. Especially since Excite Truck seems to have "sleeper hit" written all over it due to all the positive buzz it gets from people that have played it.

It is nice to go from being slammed for a Nintendo fanboy most of the time I've been on the forum to now being a Nintendo hater. That is pretty cool actually. :)

No Rumble Pak for N64 games on the VC? :(

 Okay, see, that's why I said my memory was hazy. It's all good. I appreciate the mini-review. :)

What does that mean? Why compare it to a Dreamcast game? Is it the graphics? The content?

And very easy to accomplish in these here parts. ;)

I do want to stress that I totally see the potential of the system and see why many are going to love it. I just think I may be one of the old fogeys that wants to play most games with a controller. Even with the DS there have been a few games where I felt the stylus control was forced and wish they had gone more traditional.

I really didn't like the feel of having my arm out using the remote the way I see people in videos. This is a case of the Wii working the way it should, but maybe just not being for me.

I also honestly hated Excite Truck. It just felt too much like a Midway racing game from the 90's and the control really wasn't that tight or precise. I would have loved to demo it with Zelda or Wii sports instead.

darkside 11-09-06 08:15 AM

Another list of VC games and tons of great titles. Not sure when these will come out but they have been submitted to the ESRB. Mario RPG, Super Metroid and Kirby Super Star are all AAA titles. I still own them for the SNES. They will definitely be worth $8 when they come out. Other great stuff for the N64 and SNES on the list, but I have Ocarina for the Cube already. Not interested in the NES titles though. I already have many unlocked on animal crossing.

Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Super NES; rated E for Everyone)
Kirby's Super Star (Super NES; rated E for Everyone)
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64; rated E for Everyone)
Starfox 64 (Nintendo 64; rated E for Everyone)
Super Metroid (Super NES; rated E for Everyone)
Kirby's Dream Land 3 (Super NES; rated E for Everyone)
The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64; rated E for Everyone)
Excitebike (NES; rated E for Everyone)
Ice Climber (NES; rated E for Everyone)
Dr. Mario (NES; rated E for Everyone)
Mario Brothers (NES; rated E for Everyone)
Ice Hockey (NES; rated E for Everyone)
Soccer (NES; rated E for Everyone)

I can't believe the Wii is just an overclocked GameCube, that sucks! Of course, everyone can argue it's all about gameplay... but still, i got a GameCube...

Ehh. I still don't have a problem with this. Nintendo doesn't feel it can compete with the 360 and PS3 in the hardcore gamer department... and it probably can't, so why waste the time and money to do so? Instead of playing a game they can't win (I think that's evident by the support for the Gamecube in the last generation), they just made up a game that played to their strength through innovation.

jeffdsmith 11-09-06 09:06 AM

I can't believe people really believe its just an overclocked GameCube.
