Reviews are glowingly positive with most complaints being about needing a firmware update and not having user accessible RGB controls (both being minor in the long run). I'm just nervous because other TVs with those specs/size start at about $2500! I think pinata242 has this screen. My other major concern is how soft things will look in its non-native resolution as most of my use will be PS2/Cube/Wii/DVD at 480i and 480p for at least the next half year.

I do have the LVM-42W2. My FW is 1.16 and I've been trying for 3 months to get Westy out to update it. My buddy has FW 1.19 and hasn't had any of my problems. Also got it from BB so I imagine all their stock is up-to-date.

I haven't had any problems with 480i SD signals or my 480p DVD player. I haven't hooked a non-HD console up to it, though. If there's any softness there, it isn't enough for me to notice. Of course, my eyes are about 12 feet away from the screen when I watch.

I love it and for $1500, I think the price is right. I imagine that we'll see price drops after the Holidays, maybe around the Superbowl (maybe just after).

Just make sure you can get the Component cable for the Wii on release day. That is the situation I'm in now... I need that cable before I can hook it up to my 110" front projector. I refuse to play it with the composite video cable. But the rumor right now is that we can get it on release day, so i am hoping this holds true.

The latest I read on GoNintendo is that S-Video and Component will be in-store at launch. Actually, maybe a day or two before like the rest of the accessories. I'm hoping Best Buy puts their accessories out early that weekend.. I want to both GGC an extra remote, nunchuck and component cable to save $15 and pick my system up from Gamestop at midnight!

Target.com has the Olevia 32" Olevia HD Ready LCD TV/Monitor for $600 - 10% off coupon TCRCPTAB = $540 w/ free shipping. If you have a discover card you can get another 5% cash back on that.

Might be a cheaper route to widescreen in the mid-term.

I was shooting for at LEAST 37" (so that I don't loss size from my current set for 4:3 stuff). They have a 42" Olevia for $1499.99.. I guess before the coupon code. With the coupon that'd make it a little bit less than the Westinghouse but at the cost of 1080p. Engadget has a good review of that set with their only con (to me) being lack of 1080p.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/10/18...i-42-inch-lcd/

Though I guess for under $600.. that'd probably be a sweet deal to hold me off for a year or two until I've got two incomes coming in and can lose some of the apprehensiveness of near $2000 purchases.

But.. the size difference. :(

The comments section for that review are nothing but "Get the Westinghouse instead!" posts. Gah, I guess I should just do it.. if I'm not happy it's not like I can't just take it back. Maybe Best Buy will let me bring a Cube up there so I can see how it looks not hooked up to their crappy setups.

How about on a DLP TV? Do they handle black colors very well? I was actually looking at an LCD, but I will look at other options now.

I was actually looking at getting either an LCD or DLP for our new Wii

37" - 40"

Any suggestions?

Money is a factor though :(

BOOOO! Just a slide from a presentation, but no reason to think this isn't what we'll be seeing in 1.5 weeks. http://gonintendo.com/?p=8073
Luckily I have some white DVD cases that my some Disney movies I've recovered came in.

Well that sucks - they probably just wanted to keep the box small.

Just received an email from Amazon. I assume most of you received it... but for those that didnt. Looks like you'll get the same bonus as that Target launch day deal except for 2 games @ Amazon plus some change if you can add .02 somewhere... without having to go on launch. And I personally find $20 Amazon more useful that Target dollars.

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

Get a jump-start on the holidays: Shop Toys & Games for kids of all ages. Order now and get FREE Super Saver Shipping* on orders over $25 shipped from and sold by Amazon.com. Want to save even more? When you spend $100 by November 12, you'll get $20 to spend on a purchase you make in December.**

The fine print in the email says the following: "This offer does not include video games, video-game consoles, books, DVDs, or baby products."

If you are concerned about black levels, the new Sony Bravia LCDs look tremendous in my opinion. I personally never liked DLPs because of the narrow viewing angles.

If you want more info, I highly recommend the AVS Forum:

Anubis2005X 11-07-06 06:29 PM

I second the AVS Forum. That's where I got info for my DLP front projector last year. However, I too am looking to get a 1080p set. LCDs have made tremendous strides with black levels. Don't knock it until you check it out at the store. Seriously, the contrast ratios are tons higher than they used to be...

I prefer quality over "quantity"... Toshiba 34" CRT widescreen HDTV. My brother just picked one up at Best Buy for $850. (a far cry from the $1800 I paid 4 years ago for the older model).

msdmoney 11-07-06 09:31 PM

Pixy, I have been looking at the same Westinghouse, with the latest firmware 1.0 it seems like people are very happy with it, especially for the price. It looks like Best Buy has stopped stocking this TV, although there still might be some left in stores. They now stock the 42w07 which is 720p, I think a 1080p set for so cheap was hurting their price bubble.

The rumor right now over at CAG is that Best Buy is going to have the 42w07 (720p) Westinghouse for $1000 on Black Friday, along with some other TV deals.

This tv seems like the right fit for me, good picture for a reasonable price. The tech on these things is changing so fast, and even the top of the line tv's still seem to have there inherent flaws and quirks to iron out, I think I would regret spending a huge amount of money on one of these only to see the price drop big time in 6 months. It reminds me of the computer market 5-10 years ago. I figure I will get one of these now and then upgrade to a much bigger TV in a few years when the prices have stabilized somewhat.

But I think I want to play all the next gen games on an HDTV even if the Wii games are only 480p.

Phineas444 11-07-06 09:37 PM

I read a while back about the Wii being able to connect to VC via an adapter rather than a wireless connection. Has any hardware for this been announced and be available at launch?

eatntae 11-07-06 10:46 PM

I stopped by the Gamestop in my local mall today during my Gears of War search, and I saw the Wii display unit. I asked the employee when they were going to turn it on, and they said they weren't going to because it was supposed to go to the Gamestop down the street. I asked when his location would get the display unit, and he said "hell if I know."

So I stopped by the Gamestop down the street from my house and asked when they'd be getting the display unit in. They said they had it in the back, and just had to unpack it. They said they couldn't use it until tomorrow though, when the Nintendo rep comes with the controllers. They also said there were going to require ID to play with it, because the controllers are wireless. With this in mind, I almost forgot about Gears of War; I'm excited to go back to Gamestop tomorrow to try out the Wii!

Obviously I'm just speculating, but by the size of the graphic, it looks like it could be a DS sized case for WiiSports. Whatever it is, I hope it's not a cardboard sleeve.

I popped into an EB near me yesterday afternoon and picked up Gears of War. While I was paying for it, I turned to look out the store's front window and saw a Wii kiosk. Somehow I completely missed it while walking into the store. I asked the guy if it was playable and he said that it was, but I would have to give him my drivers license. Like all the other Gamestop/EB Wii kiosks I've read about, it only had Excite Truck. I played through one race and it was more fun than I expected. I knew the controller was small, but it still surprised me as I picked it up for the first time. Nice and light, too, and it fits into your hands comfortably. It's amazingly responsive, and sensitive enough that you can make very subtle movements, and your truck will turn noticeably. Rotating the controller towards you and away from you to nail the landings just feels right, and you can pick up the controls in a minute or two. I was in 1st place until I smacked into a tree right near the end and dropped to 5th.

I'll definitely be picking up Excite Truck at launch now, but I think I'll avoid the kiosks until I get my own system. It was great to try out the new controller, and it proves to me that it's not just a lot of hype, but I want the experience to be at least somewhat fresh when I fire up the Wii at home for the first time.

Nope, they even use sleeves for DS games bundled in with systems. I seriously doubt they've gone out of their way to create a new half-height DVD case for this game. now, if they did it for all Wii games, we'd have something special. Expect cardboard.

Wow. Talk about misleading. They include a link to video games through the email.
