I love FPS games as much as the next guy, and played plenty of them, but seriously, they aren't all that different from each other.

So FPS's seem a little "samey" to me while I love platformers which I'm sure seem samey to people that aren't big fans of them.

For me there are mainly 2 types of FPS games. Ones with gimmicky/big weapons and ones with gimmicky/over the top powers. Serious Sam, Doom, Quake and Time Splitters all have outrageous weapons. F.E.A.R., Far Cry and Shadowrun have the powers going for them. I still play more FPS than anything else so I am ok with limited variety and now and then one is released that breaks the mold.

I'd love to see a next gen Serious Sam. Imagine the number of shit they could send at you at once. Pretty much the only game that made me laugh as well.

Deus Ex = FPS and RPG blended together
Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon = tactical realism
Far Cry = open ended environments
I would say those are all pretty different.

However, this isn't exclusive to FPS. It's just that if you're not a fan of FPS (or a mild fan), then it gets repetitive and old. I like FPS, but I'm not a "fan" of them. I loved Half-life though. I couldn't get into Deus Ex.

I remember once when I bought a new computer, I made sure it could play the recently announced Duke Nukem Forever. That computer had a Pentium II 350 processor and an STB Nvidia TNT 16meg video card! This was when it was still based on the QuakeII engine........
