Broussard: "We won't rush Duke Nukem Forever"

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6152687.html

Late last week, Take-Two Interactive filed a 10-Q earnings statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Buried inside of it, the company noted that in March, it had renegotiated its agreement with developer 3D Realms to publish the long-in-the-making shooter Duke Nukem Forever.

According to the 10-Q, the two parties agreed to new financial terms, which were listed in the 10-Q in thousands of dollars (figures have been updated to reflect real numbers): "In March 2005, the company [Take-Two] renegotiated a $6,000[,000] contingent obligation due upon delivery of the final PC version of Duke Nukem Forever through the payment of $4,250[,000] and issuance of a promissory note in the principal amount of $500[,000]. The payment of the promissory note is contingent upon the commercial release of such product prior to December 31, 2006."

With Take-Two holding out a $500,000 promissory note as a carrot to get Duke Nukem Forever, some PC gamers became hopeful that the project would be finished in time for the 2006 holiday season. Others worried that the storied title, which has been in development since 1997, would be rushed into production before it was truly ready.

Now, it seems the former group has had their hopes dashed--while the latter group has had its fears allayed. In a post on the 3D Realms forums started in part due to a GameSpot typographical error (which has since been corrected and apologized for), Broussard has dismissed the prospect that 3D Realms would be tempted by a half-million-dollar sum.

"As for the 500k completion bonus, I don't even know were that came from," said the outspoken executive. "I do know that we never cared or asked for it, and I think it was just tossed in as part of some other agreement. We're certainly not motivated by that amount of money, after all this time, and getting the game right is what matters. I would never ship a game early (even a couple of months), for 500k."

Broussard went on to outline the current status of Duke Nukem Forever. "Our deal is simple," he said. "We're making the game. It'll be done when it's done. We've funded 99.999% of the game (aside from a very, very small advance from GT Interactive, years ago, before Take 2 bought the game from them). It's our risk, our necks and our gamble. Under the deal we should be earning royalties from about unit 30,000 or so (that's a real small number)."

They're a biggest liar in gaming industry. I stopped waiting for them back in 1999 when they CLAIMED that they will release DNF and they never did. Sorry, Broussard, I ain't going to buy DNF if it ever release.

I am honestly surprised that DNF is still in development. This is the first official word on the game in several years. I had figured that the game was quietly cancelled.

I wish they would say what the hell is taking so long though. Duke is a rather old-school style FPS. Why would it possibly take 9+ years to develop? Half-Life 2 "only" took 6 years, and it is a much more massive and epic FPS game than Duke will ever be.

Somebody actually cares that this game may come out or not? I mean, Duke 3D was cute when it came out and the only other FPS on the market was Doom but will Duke 4 even have anything to make it stand out now when there's a trillion similar products on the market? Besides, I think Serious Sam filled any gap that Duke may have left open as far as action and humor in an FPS.

Duke Nukem Forever Plugging Away

3D Realms admits to screwing up, promises new Duke will be multi-platform.

Duke Nukem Forever has seemingly been in production forever. In fact, the long-awaited PC title has been in the hopper for 10 years. While some thought the game might be axed, it appears Duke Nukem Forever is closer to becoming a reality than previously in its long history. In an interview with YouGamers, 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller confirmed that the title was still in development and that significant progress was being made.

So why has the new Duke Nukem title been stuck in development hell for so long? We fully admit [we] screwed up the development of DNF, and it's now an industry joke," Miller told YouGamers. Adding that 3D Realms "set the bar too high" and "tried too hard to make the game to beat all games." That philosophy has changed over the past year-and-a-half. Miller said that 3D Realms has "taken a much more realistic look at the project, we've hired a truckload of experienced help, and I personally believe we are now on the right track…finally."

Many PC gamers were a bit fearful of DNF, assuming the game would be a true beast that only high-end systems could handle. According to Miller, that's not the case. "We try to support all of the newer, cool whiz-bang graphics features," Miller admitted to YouGamers, "but at the same time we try to make it so the game will run on middle-range machines, too."

Recent rumors suggested that Duke Nukem Forever was also coming to Xbox 360. "The plan is definitely to bring DNF to multiple platforms," Miller said, though he would not name specific consoles.

No release date is in sight for DNF, but it does appear the game is starting to gain some momentum. Perhaps we won't have to wait another decade to enjoy Duke Nukem Forever.

I'd consider buying DNF if it was a good/great game. That's all that's really important.

Duke 3D is my all-time fav PC game. Just watched the 2001 trailer they made for DNF. Despite the 10-year tease, I'm still looking forward to this.

Even though the game has been in development for 10 years and is the joke in computer gaming....all they need is some aggressive/catchy advertising to make sure the game is a top seller when it's finally release. I'm thinking something along the lines of taking out full pages ads with the slogan: "3D Realms is about to make you their bitch".

Hmm...what will happen first?

The end of the Iraq war,
the release of Duke Nukem Forever,
the release of Chinese Democracy by GnR,
a 'must have' PS3 game,
or a fully electric mass market family sedan.

It's funny how that list is already out of date, since Vista has been released. I generally like it, but certain entries, especially the one about Joss Whedon being our master, take away from their objectivity.

I think they should add that Martin Scorsese has been nominated 3 more times for the Best Director Oscar and won.

If they're going to mention Britney Spears at all, they should add her first marriage, annulment, "real" marriage, having 2 kids, and getting divorced, maybe with rehab thrown in there somewhere as well.

I meant to bump this last Friday when it was the 10 year anniversary of the game being announced.

I wonder if there are any employees who have worked on this project the whole 10 years?

When it comes out it will probably be exactly the same as the other hundred of fps games on the market.

I always get the feeling that people who claim every FPS is the exact same have not played a FPS since the Doom clone days of the '90s. The FPS genre has come a long ways since then. Sure you still get the typical Doom clone once in awhile, but there are also unique FPS games like Deus Ex, Half-life, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Far Cry PC, etc. Saying those games are all the same is ignorant.

The problem is when you're not a big fan of the genre it's harder to appreciate the differences.

So FPS's seem a little "samey" to me while I love platformers which I'm sure seem samey to people that aren't big fans of them.
