Well, I got my system today. I just have to wait until after work to hook it up and test it out.
But it looks like a new system. It was in the microsoft bag like when I originally bought one. It had the plastic over the infrared sensor and the sticker on the dvd drive.
The manufacture date is 1/3/06, which is the same as what a friend had when he got his system a week or two ago.
So, right now, I'm really impressed with the service response. One week turnaround is great. Now I just have to hope this unit doesn't have any problems.

I may call for my warranty then. They BETTER let me switch my serial #'s as many times as a I want with the warranty period. It was their fault both times my system died. I wonder if they switch it automatically when they send you the new 360. BTW, mine had a manufacture date of 1/17/06...so I was happy. Now I have TWO 360 retail boxes....yeah.

For those that had problems, did you have the white dvd drive?

I have the gray one, which from what I've read is more more stable and made by Samsung. I've not had any disc read problems, etc. If you did have that drive, just curious if you now have a gray one.

I bought my 360 in Jan. and it had a 12/26 manufacture date on it. I'm wondering if they are producing new 360's with the gray drive only.

My problem has nothing to do with drives...it just died: (I think mine is gray now, not sure)

first one: I D/L mandatory LIVE update, and the system crashed...3 red lights
next one: I could not connect to LIVE (MS fault, sent out defective refurbs)
third: Works great....so far

What brand drive are you using and how big? Also are you using an external power source for the drive or is it drawing power from the USB port? I bought an external 250GB Seagate with an enclosure from TigerDirect, formatted 2 partitions to FAT32 and plugged it into the 360 USB ports - tried both fron ports and the one in back. Drive was not recognized. Can't seem to figure it out. Maybe its the 2 partitions (196 MB and 42MB, using Partiton Magic - would only allow 196MB per partition)? The use of an external power source for the drive? Any ideas?

I think it is a Western Digital. It is a standard 3.5" IDE drive, I bought an enclosure off ebay and use it as an external. It has its own power source. I think it is only 80GB. I have about 40GB of music, so anything bigger than an 80 would be a waste sitting in the stereo setup.

As for formatting, I formatted on my Mac so that it would be recognizable on both Windows PCs and Macs. Not sure how that would factor in though.

Yeah bahgee you need to be using an external power supply for the drive the enclosure you got with it should have one. If it doesn't you need to get ahold of Tiger Direct cause I'm sure they were supposed to come with one. I actually got a couple other people to buy that same drive and I will see one of them tonight so I'll be sure to take a look at it. Anyhow you should have been able to format that entire drive under a single partition.

Unexpected "secret" game announced today:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/693/693369p1.html

Table Tennis from the last company you'd expect, Rockstar!

It's already getting panned on some of the message boards, but I think it has potential to be pretty fun. Nice price point too, $39.99.

Got the enclosure and assembled it. Used the power supply while trying to connect it to the xbox. No luck. Partition Magic 8.1 would only let me partition 196 GB Max on one partition under FAT32. Let me know how your friend fared and if he was able to get the drive to recognized by the 360.

Edit: Just got it to work! My mistake was that I created logical as opposed to primary partitions. I also created two FAT32 partitions and then merged them into 1, so now the entire drive is one large FAT32 partition.

MS patents motion sensing tech. Very interesting.

Microsoft patents motion-sensing technology

New spatial-measurement system detailed; will the Xbox 360 eventually incorporate a Revolution-style player interface?

Nintendo has made no secret of its "blue ocean" strategy for the next generation of console wars. Instead of getting bogged down trying to do the same thing its competitors are doing, only better, the company is looking to explore new waters, creating markets where there are no competitors. One of the prime examples of this strategy is the motion-sensitive controller for the Nintendo Revolution, but the blue ocean Nintendo had envisioned could be getting pretty crowded by the time the system comes out.

Last week, a post on the flash-game and movie site Razoric.com sparked rumors that Sony was hard at work on a Revolution-style controller for the PlayStation 2, and now there's evidence that Microsoft is exploring similar technologies.

A little over a week ago, a US patent was granted to Microsoft for a new method of spatial measurement. Basically, the setup proposed in the patent application can track an object's path through 3D space using multiple-range cameras in a more accurate and consumer-friendly manner than has previously been available. The patent was originally applied for in August of 2004.

The patent makes no mention of the technology being used for anything game-related, but it does say it would ideally be implemented with something that has the basic components of a personal computer, and also emphasizes that a number of modifications and variations to the technology are possible. The only use for the technology explicitly described in the patent is that of tracking a user's path walking around a room.

Microsoft has already announced that a camera peripheral is in the works for the Xbox 360. And while the company has been talking about video chat and video mail as future Xbox functions for years, recent reports indicate that the Xbox 360 camera is more than just a simple webcam. A recent report on Xbox 360 Fanboy cites a member of the Microsoft hardware team as saying that the next-gen system's camera will allow for gesture-initiated gameplay. As an example of such, the article suggests a game where players can uses gestures to silently give their teammates orders to advance or retreat.

Microsoft representatives did not immediately return requests for comment.

Microsoft updates 360, DOA4

Two updates out for 360 owners; dashboard fix prepares consoles for further updates, DOA4 fix includes option to reset online statistics.

Xbox 360 owners who turn on their machines and load up Tecmo's Dead or Alive 4 may be hit with consecutive loading screens. Microsoft has announced that a new autoupdate for the Xbox 360 is ready and will be downloaded the next time gamers log into Xbox Live. What does the update do? Microsoft doesn't mention anything specific, only saying, "The March 2006 Xbox 360 update will prepare your Xbox 360 console for future system and title updates."

A new DOA4 update is also up, reports Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb on his blog MajorNelson.com. Hryb reports that the update will also give gamers the opportunity to reset their online statistics at the time the patch is installed, giving those who have been pummeled black and blue a fresh start. However, other than that option, it's unclear what the update actually does.

Xbox Live has been busy of late, with new demos and customizing options appearing several times a week over the past few weeks. Upcoming files expected to be posted soon include demos of THQ's The Outfit and Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

I just have to say that I am loving the 360 more and more. I was up till almost 2 playing PD0 capture the flag last night. I got in a great game and I am learning PD0 more now. I really like this game the more I play it, especially online. Any of you guys here playing PD0? We should get together sometime. I will be on today and tonight again. I really need to throw Halo2 in and see how it is on the 360 too. I hope it looks good on my HDTV.

I play PD0 pretty regularly. My GT is Cardiff Giant11 so feel free to add me to your list. Hopefully I'll have my 360 back by early next week.

My understanding is the white one is made by Hitachi and LG and the gray by Toshiba and Samsung.

I thought Nintendo trademarked their controller in such a way it would prevent anything similar?

the big difference is that this will be a peripheral for Sony/MS where as out of the box for Nintendo where only a handful of games will probably work with it. Versus the majority of games for Nintendo. I know Nintendo's isn't out yet, but it still seems like it would be an uphill struggle for both companies since they won't be included with the system.

I'm not familiar with Nintendo's patents on it, but every innovation in controllers they've done, analog sticks and rumble, has been copied. I've even seen Reggie say that they expected it to be copied.

A good bundle could solve the attach rate problem. If something like Halo 3 supported the control scheme and came bundled with it. It's alse very early this gen, they could start bundling them with the system.

Weird I got an email from MS today saying they shipped my replacement XBox on 2-28. Tracking info was given but it doesn't work yet. The odd thing is that I didn't even send my unit back until 3/1. Very odd indeed!

I'm sure they will try and copy it, but I definitely remember reading that is why they were comfortable showing it so early, b/c they had the patents in place so neither company could steal their thunder like previous controllers.

Quick question: I bought the core system at my local target and was wondering if I can buy any external HDD with a USB 2.0 instead of the XBOX first-party HDD. I know the XBOX brand HDD comes pre-loaded stuff but can I use any external HDD instead?

That could be your TV doing that. My TV locks into 16:9 mode when receiving a 480p signal. doesn't do it for 1080i though.
rabbit-i don't think that'll work.

No. You must have the official Xbox360 HDD to use for saving games, playing backwards compatible games, etc. While you can connect an external USB HDD to the 360, you can basically only play music or view pictures you have stored on it.

Following up what Cardiff said, I've watched Buffy on my 360 on my HDTV, and it plays back in full screen like it should and doesn't stretch.
