On the plus-side, if this whole "no used games" thing takes off, it'd KILL Gamestop.

But realistically (if they actually go through with it), I think it'd instead kill the PS3.

Based on the other thread that may not be a bad thing.

When has Sony said they are going to do this with the PS3? Could they do this? Sure. My problem is that all this talk has been speculated by journalists & Analyists none of which know what is really going on at Sony. The point to a patent filed in 2000 and say that Sony will use this on the PS3. Maybe they will and maybe they wont, but until Someone from Sony tells us all this stuff is just talk aimed to take the console down a peg or two.

slop101 07-11-06 10:30 PM

I doubt they would do this too, but they're still taking a "no comment" stance on it. After all these articles and talk, they still won't issue a statement about it. Why?

But even if they went ahead and did it, I guarantee that there will be a hack to get around it within a week.

eau 07-12-06 12:46 AM

WTF! If you PS3 console dies, all your purchased PS3 games die with it ?!

mrpayroll 07-12-06 11:13 PM

Don't know if this is legit!

PS3 Cell Yields In The Toilet

In plain English, this means the PS3 Cell processor is so big and complicated, they're having a hard time making enough to satisfy the demand. An IBM Semiconductor VP says they're "lucky to get 10 or 20 percent" out of a chip like the Cell. The other 80-90 percent aren't fit to be used in PS3s, meaning they either get used in another application or thrown away if they can't be.

What this means to you is that the PS3 is probably going to be available in very limited quantities, at least until they can get the yields up. Also, Sony's going to be bleeding money on these chips, since they need to make so many (5 to 1 ratio?) to get one good enough to use in a PS3. Better get your pre-orders in now. – Jason Chen

I would hate to think what will happen when people start getting faulty systems in the first batch.

slop101 07-12-06 11:37 PM

^ add to that the fact that they're running WAY short of the blu-ray diode needed to read the discs and you have a potential cluster-fuck.

What a fucking mess...

I don't know. They could still make money on used 360, Wii, last generation & hand held games. I think it'd affect Sony a lot more negatively than it would the used games stores. Doing away with the used games market would take a concerted effort by all the major players.

As for the supposed blu-ray and cell manufacturing problems, if true, this could turn into a serious nightmare for them. Ever since the price has come out at E3, I've been dead set against picking up a PS3, but I don't want to see Sony get knocked out of the market entirely. I'm sure some of the doom and gloom stuff is exagerrated, but it's still sounding like this has the potential to be a huge disaster for them.

Nope. Did you catch this:

McNealy estimated that game fans spent about $990 million buying used games, primarily from GameStop or through EBay. Much of that spending — about $620 million — is for used PlayStation 2 games.
That is roughly 60% of their used game business. I think it would be a disaster for used game stores.

yeah but those people who now wouldn't buy a PS3 because they can only buy new games would be buying another system to replace it. I figure most of that number would be offset by the rise in the number of Wiis and 360s sold.

I want Sony to lose some of thier business due to their elitist mentality thinking that they are king shit and no one can beat them. Knock them down a peg and you won't see them trying this crap next time around. I'll be getting a PS3 but not till the cost goes way down and with all of the proprietary shit going into this thing I don't expect that to be too soon. Unless of course it ends up being another Dreamcast in which case I'll be buying one for $50 in about two years ;)

I don't know. Last I've seen, total consoles sales were 101 million PS2's, 24 million Xbox's and 21 million Gamecubes. So Sony's got about 70% of the market as far as current consoles. I could be dead wrong, but I'm guessing those ratios will be vastly different this go round, with the PS3 only getting 30% to 40% of total console sales, if that. That would obviously translate into a correspondingly smaller percentage of used game sales and less of an impact on the market.

That assumes that Sony will keep their roughly 70% of the console market share that they have with the PS2. Which I don't think they will with the price and other factors.

I think they'll still come out on top, but it will be very close between the three companies this time.

Supermallet 07-13-06 07:31 PM

Why do you think they'll still come out on top? I think Nintendo will, for the simple fact that almost everyone who is buying either a 360 or PS3 will buy a Wii to go with it, and thus Wii will sell more than 360 or PS3, and almost as many as both combined.

Solid point I hadn't thought of, as well as the point that those sales Sony loses might be picked up by MS. I stress might because PS2 was the hot thing so everyone bought one whether they were a gamer or not. I don't think we will see that again either.

Brand loyalism.

Many people say they want to go play "playstation" now like they used to "nintendo."

I think that alone will keep sony on top...unfortunately.

I'd love to see you be right though, as Nintendo is the only company who's gaming vision still interests me.

Nothing is wrong with it. But it doesn't make sense if you are Sony and telling people that one of the reasons you should spend so much money is because this is also a HD Blue Ray player.

Think about how many VHS player only units sold compared to VHS recorders. One of the big selling points was that it recorded, even though the majority of people only used it to view tapes.

Not to be argumentative, but I don't necessarily agree with that.

I'm more loyal to Nintendo, but I have friends that owned both a PS1 and PS2 with a ton of games that are not interested in this $600 movie player. I have a PS2 and, of the three consoles I owned this generation, the PS2 is really the only one I'm still playing. If they came out with a $400 system like the 360, I'd pick the PS3 in a heartbeat. Because of the price tag and the Blu-Ray mess I'm 100% non-interested in a PS3, and I've never felt that way about a major console before.

I predict mass exodus from the Playstation brand and the 360 and PS3 running virtually neck and neck with the Wii in a solid second place.

Im wondering if a scenario like this would be the best win/win situation for consumers, maybe with wii on top and the other two battling for second?

I dont think it would help consumers if one console completely bombed this gen.

I hope you're right, but I can of figure for the first 6 months to a year they'll be in limited supply and fly of shelves to the fanboys and geeks that have to have everything new, and after that we'll see a price drop which will make it easier for the people like your friends to buy.

Same with me. No interest in the PS3 for those reasons, and also no interest in the 360 due to the game library looking the same as the X-box which largely gathered dust for me.

I don't think it would hurt either. We've (IMO) not gotten any benefits out of having 3 big consoles versus two. Game and console prices have soared and we're getting (again IMO) less quality games than we got in the NES/SMS, Genesis/SNES and N64/PS1 error. Though I may be biased there due to just not liking the direction mainstream gaming has taken in the past decade.
