If Wii's virtual console is just single player and no online functions at all, then i doubt ill get one till its bargain basement price. If the virtual console is online and you get to play games with people co-op through it, then that will make a huge difference to me.

Michael Corvin 07-15-06 10:07 AM

You will be able to play the Wii online. The VC is just to d/l games.

Actually it's been mentioned in nearly every gaming magazine and numerous website articles speculating on the console war.

With the low price, unique games, and virtual console, the Wii is the logical second console.

Other than the rich, and single geeks, most people are going to be loathe to spend $1000 or (or $800 for the respective tard packs) to get a PS3 and 360.

So gamers wanting more than one console will be more likely to get either a PS3 or a 360. It's easier price wise, and it makes more sense game wise as there will be more overlap in types of games on the ps3 and 360 compared to one of those and the funky Wii lineup.

kvrdave 07-15-06 02:02 PM

And damn if you can't keep me away from Nintendo first party games. I wouldn't mind if they were just a software company, but if I have to buy their console (and the GC is actually my most played of the last gen), then I will do it. And it looks like they may make some goofy stuff that I could get my wife interested in. Double bonus.

Josh already responded to this, but think about. Most people who buy games have more than one console. With the prices of the 360 and the PS3, buying one of each of those is too expensive for a majority of gamers. Thus, for a second choice, they get the Wii.

Actually, I'm still not convinced I'll need a 2nd console to the Wii ;)

fumanstan 07-15-06 05:40 PM

Of course, it could also be with the higher costs of the PS3 and 360, people could decide to buy one and only one console, rather then spending another 200+ dollars for a second.

Supermallet 07-16-06 12:05 AM

A lot of peoplpe look at the price of the PS3 and then think 360+Wii=price of PS3, but with more variety and game choices.

the so-called "Wii60" is looking better and better as an option

They might think that, but it doesn't mean they'll purchase both. It's all speculation, and speculating based on "well ususally people have two consoles, so they'll buy the two cheapest ones this generation" just doesn't really seem all that strong, especially when the 360 and PS3 are a decent amount pricier.

Josh H 07-17-06 01:51 PM

It is speculation, but in the poll here, and discussion on other forums, it seems like the 360/Wii combination is the most popular at least among the hardcore gamers posting on net forums.

It may well be different for joe six pack casual gamer though, and all that can ever be done there is speculate.

I'd say thats most likely to be a poll of US developers. No developer is japan is excited to code xbox 360 games. So that list is skewed unless you're looking for more racing games or FPS's.

But regardless, it's just a poll and it shows some interesting results - which was the point of the post. And are you positive that no Japanese devs are excited to code the 360? Or is that an opinion?

Qui Gon Jim 07-17-06 06:59 PM

Who gives a damn who wins in Japan (aside from those who live in Japan)? What if the devs were revealed to be EA, Activision, and the GTA people? It is very telling that only 20% of those polled thought the PS3 tools were good.

Fandango 07-17-06 07:38 PM

I'd say the people who care about some amazing games not made by US developers give a damn.

Qui Gon Jim 07-17-06 08:27 PM

How about caring about all kinds of games? Without big sales of titles many of us find mundane, there would be no exotic Japanese titles. Things have changed. The US is now the primary market for software houses. If PS3's entry cost and difficulty level are too high, then there is no "taking chances" smaller, niche-ier projects. If a console doesn't get a wide installed base, then those cool innovative titles won't come.

So while I wouldn't play an EA Madden or MLB title (and I love both sports) I understand the importance the sale of these titles means when I want to play one of those "original" Japanese titles.

Exactly. 99% of the games I've enjoyed in my 20% years of games were made by Japanese developers.

While I agree, I would say that nearly 90% of those were available on Nintendo, so I don't necessarily see that as a big benefit for Sony.

I am the exact opposite. :nopanic: FPS and action games are my favorite genres. :johnwoo: Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Metal Gear are about the only Japanese games I care for, and that's probably because they play more like the traditional western developed game than the traditional Japanese game.

Josh H 07-18-06 12:16 PM

Yep, definitely the exact opposite as I loathe FPS and action games. :D

Sony has had a lot of big time system selling games from japanese developers like Square-Enix; Konami, Capcom, Namco etc.

Not doing as well in Japan and potentially losing exclusives from these and other companies would be huge for them.

Qui Gon Jim 07-18-06 06:23 PM

Not nearly as huge as losing support from EA or Rockstar. I say this as a person who's favorite games are all developed in Japan. The US is the #1 market. If PS3 does not take off then the devs will either shift to Wii of XBox out of sheer financial necessity.

Keep in mind what a coup it was for Sony to get Square to jump ship, and how many thought the bridge was burned forever. Lo and behold, there is money to be made on Nintendo platforms and Square and Nintendo put aside their differences.

Josh H 07-18-06 08:07 PM

Agreed, losing Rockstar or EA would be bigger, but losing the big japanese developers would be a big blow as well, as games by those companies are million sellers in the US and Japan (probably Europe as well).

Qui Gon Jim 07-18-06 08:25 PM

For the point I am trying to make, it is irrelevant what region the game came from. My point is that if the PS3 bombs huge in the US, then we will definitely see developers switch to either Wii or XB360. If PS3 is successful in Japan and bombs here, they will still support all viable platforms, even if one is XB360. They cannot afford to ignore the US market. There will be exclusives for sure but anything capable of selling will be ported over.

Please note that my post was in response to a reply Blitz made about a poll that doesn't skew well with his fantasy of Sony world domination. Typically, and predictably, he attempts to discredit anything and everything that places Sony in a bad light. There are a handful of people who whole existence seems to be BD's success and if PS3 falters, BD is done.
