I think they will have a hard time getting parents etc paying 500-600 bucks

sureAV421 05-08-06 09:40 PM

wow. what a letdown. No HDMI (only 1 on the 60GB). what the hell are they doing?

Setzer 05-08-06 09:41 PM

Those same parents didn't mind spending $800 or more for a 360 on ebay last Christmas. -rolleyes-

maingon 05-08-06 09:43 PM

that wasnt the average parent, and most were probably hard core gamers, and that was probably a small amount of peopel buying them at that price

Setzer 05-08-06 09:47 PM

If most parents are going to have a hard time spending $500 on a PS3 then they're going to have a hard time buying a 360 for $400. So, how is Microsoft going to succeed? Seems like they're doing just fine to me.

Yep!!! Either pony up for the $599 sku or No 1080p output, no option to carry multi-channel PCM audio due to no multi-channel analog outputs, and no option to pass Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD or DTS HD bitstreams.

Is this in response to the motion sensors?

This to me is the biggest news. For people wanting this to hook up to an HDTV and use for movies and games the $599 version is a must. There is no DDplus, DD TrueHD or DTS-HD support listed either. All you get is 5.1 and LPCM support.

Still don't see how they are getting 4 million of these out the door by the end of the year, but maybe Sony is farther along that we have been lead to believe.

jeffdsmith 05-08-06 10:04 PM

I'm so confused, didn't they say the PS3 would have dual HDMI outputs? I remember people discussing it etc.

So is there now only one HDMI output?

Sony does this and it always irritates me. They promise stuff and then start stripping things away before the final product is launched. Not only did they reduce it to one, they took it completely off of the $500 model.

Even for $600 thats still going to be somewhat cheaper then a stand-alone Blu-Ray player and there is the little extra inclusion of a freakin next generation game console. That makes the Playstation 3 still a higher price value then any stand alone high definition player.

Indeed. Here's the original fodder:

Clearly two outputs. I guess all that talk about multiple screens at ####x#### resolutions was BS. Its a shame really, because about the time this hits I would be able to afford two new HDTV's for it. (And GT whenever it comes)

Blitz6Speed 05-08-06 10:15 PM

Even the PDF file has 1080p listed for BOTH, so who cares if HDMI is there or not? As long as 1080p is capable via component, who cares how you plug it in?

Gallant Pig 05-08-06 10:15 PM

The dual HDMI thing was BS from the start.

However no HDMI in the $499 version is a huge disappointment. I wonder how the general public will react to this. Which version will everyone want?

I want to know too--can we watch our Blue Ray movies over component with the PS3? Its hardly a difference with standard DVD

raven56706 05-08-06 10:21 PM

if it is over component video 1080p..... no tv will show it.... remember most tvs only can do 1080i....

No, no you cant.

Gallant Pig 05-08-06 10:26 PM

You won't even be able to use a component connection to watch any Hi Def DVD format. Blu Ray or HDDVD.

I think they are talking about the games in 1080p?

The general public will not care or even know what it is.

hail2dking 05-08-06 10:28 PM

Here's a theory (although a poor one) the HDMI NextGen output is HDMI 1.3, the AV Multi Out is component/composite/HDMI 1.1...perhaps?

That is my assumption as well. There is no way that movies will be viewed in hi def through component cables.

 Sticker shock!

This is true, but Sony was also using this to win their war with HD DVD and now I'm really not sure. $600 is the minimum for this if watching Blu-ray movies is important and it still has other limitations like no 6 channel analog which means you will have to have a HDMI compatible receiver to get any sound better than standard 5.1 sound. Not to mention there is no way of knowing exactly how good it will be as a movie player.

Considering the HD DVD players may be under $400 by November the PS3 doesn't seem to be the home run for the Blu-ray group it once seemed.

Now video games is another story and many consumers wanting a game system may have no issue at all with the sticker price come November.

The toshiba HD-DVD player does it. As long as ICT isnt turned on the disc, it will output its max over component.

Why's that? I thought you'd still be able to watch blue ray movies over component as long as the individual blue ray disc doesn't have that one flag set that forces downsampling over component?
