I still don't understand why many of you are buying a new system to play old games!?! -confused-

What is so hard to understand? Just because a new system comes out the other doesn't magically disappear and cease to exist.

1.) Unfinished games I currently own
2.) All 360 games will run SRP for a while, so in between big purchases I can snag some Xbox games for a bargain.
3.) It would be nice to sell the old box to cut into the price of the new one
4.) Games that will still get play regardless if they are "old" Halo 2, Burnout series, etc.

As I mentioned in the other thread:
Just because the 360 came out doesn't mean I don't want to play those games now. That is just silly.

No one is buying a new system to play old games. We're buying it to play new ones. But that doesn't mean that old games are suddenly worthless and should never be played again.

I have games on my Xbox that I'll still want to play. NCAA Football 06 for example... there's no next gen version of that until next summer. I don't want both systems hooked up in my living room if I can help it, so I'd prefer that the 360 be able to play it.

Also, as the Xbox starts to come to an end, no doubt that 1) New games should get a touch cheaper, and B) used games will be plentiful. For the next 6 months or so, there won't be an amazing amount of new 360 games that I'll want to play, but there WILL be regular Xbox games that I'll want to check out.

Eventually I'd like to trade in my Xbox or sell it. But before that happens, I want to be sure that the older games I still enjoy will be playable on the new system.

So to some of us, this whole BC stuff makes perfect sense.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the old save games are not compatible on the xbox 360, so I hope you don't mind starting over. ;)

With half of my games not on that list, they're practically begging me to mod my XBox so that I can eliminate the most likely failure point. I wouldn't pirate any games; it would just be an insurance policy.

The most obvious (or atleast I would have thought) is the fact that you have an existing catalog of games to use w/the machine instead of just 1 or 2 you purchase w/ the system. As you start adding to your catalog of new games you'll probably play the old ones less, unless there is a particular one you really like and they don't bother rereleasing it.

I thought there was a recent article saying they found a work around for that?

I sold my xbox in anticipation of the 360, I have no other way to play my xbox games. The fact that most of my library is unplayable stinks, but I kind of expected shaddy support.

Would you guys mind posting the games you have that aren't listed? I would be curious to see what games you have that aren't going to be backward-compatable on launch.

As for me, I've got Halo, Halo 2, Test Drive: Eve of Destruction all ready to go. I hope that the Midway arcade classics get added, becuase those are some pretty sweet collections. Otherwise, I'll be happy w/ the new games.

My biggest complaints are RallyeSport games, PGR, and the ones I posted earler.

As someone pointed out, a lot of the games that are supported are the crap games that don't push the current xbox, so they are easier to bring over. I'm sure titles like Halo were top priority and thats why they made it already.

There was a rumor reported that saves would transfer via ethernet, but it was apparently just that: a rumor. The official BC FAQ says:

I've gotten rid of most of my older Xbox games but i was suprised to not see the Midway Arcade Treasures supported. They are something i will definately be holding onto.

Could it be that some publishers dont want their games to be 360 compatible so they can sell you a 'new and improved' XBox 360 version? Could the publishers do that?

If that was the case, you would have seen that precedent started with Halo and Halo 2. Since Microsoft isn't doing it, I guarantee you that none of the other publishers will either.

It's just going to take time to get more games certified as BC. People have to sit and test these games all the way through in order to confirm that they'll work on the 360, and so it'll take time to do this. I bet by January we'll see another 200+ titles added to that list.

Personally, I almost never replay a game I have finished, so backwards compatibility is unimportant to me about 95% of the way. On the other hand, I can see why people would want it and it is a nice option.

But, backwards compatibility only started with the PS2. Thats why it seems kind of strange to me when people act as if we had since 1976.

Its not a deal breaker, it will just be nice to pick up some cheap X box games to go with a couple of new 360 games and not have to keep the old console. I'll just have to consult the list before doing so.

I very rarely replay games either as I don't have a lot of gaming time.

I'm glad Half Life 2 is on the list as I just pre-ordered it using the pre-order deal at Game Rush. I'm still amazed they did not hold that title and make it a 360 launch title.

I sold my Xbox + 16 games for $350 on Ebay and it helped me be able to afford the 360. You guys who can hang on to all your old stuff are lucky and must have a nicely expendable income.

You're forgetting about the Atari 7800. It is compatible with Atari 2600 cartridges. So maybe not 1976, but definitely 1986 :)

I think the fact that it is on the same medium (DVD) and essentially the same controller is what drives us to expect BC. Nintendo was so different everytime, it didn't seem to make sense.

And now games are supposed to be about content and fun factor more than technology. (I know, if this were totally true, then we wouldn't be so interested in the xbox 360) Anyways, I would like to play all my old games. Especiall in 720p. This is a major factor for me. Not deal breaker, but probably deal maker.

The Atari 7800 was backwards compatible with 2600 games.
The Game Gear was backwards compatible with Master System games (with an add-on).
The Game Boy Color was backwards compatible with Game Boy games.
The Game Boy Advance was backwards compatible with both Game Boy Color and Game Boy games (this was released after the PlayStation 2, but it was in development before the PS2 came out).

Damn. I was thinking about keeping mine, but I think I would take $350. I didn't think they would fetch that much.

Nintendo used the same medium up until the GameCube--cartridges. Sure, they were shaped differently, but that was only to avoid confusion and keep people from trying to play NES games in a SNES (etc.). The insides of the cartridges were basically the same, other than having increasingly larger ROMs as time passed.

From a technical perspective, the Xbox and Xbox360 could not be much more different. For the few (apparently) who understand the implications of that, BC was not expected and is just an added bonus.

That depends. Every game I ever bought was $10-$20, with an average price of probably ~$12. Bought the xbox(es) used and cheap as well. I would consider your position, buying a new console on launch, as being more expendable.
