Love the additon of the analog stick, as I said earlier, that's one thing that would get me to upgrade. But in all, a cool idea for a fan mock up. |
Yeah, that's a flat one in a little hole, more or less similar to the one on the PSP.

Oh, and no, I still don't have my DS (still waiting for my BB rewardzone coupons). 5 games, no console. |
I broke down and bought Electroplankton on Ebgames.com just now. It looks like it's back in stock in all the sites I checked.

I bought Electroplankton off of Overstock.com, but it's a pre-order set to ship on the 25th. I only bought from Overstock because of the 10% off thing for all customers, and then I had the $5/off coupon from that misprice from last year that I never did use.

Shocking high score and good review for Touch Golf at IGN. I loved the old T&E golf games on the 3DO, but honestly had no hope for this game considering how bad most sports titles have been on the DS. Now this game has moved onto my buy list. Thumbs up to Nintendo and T&E for delivering a solid golf experience. Something EA fell well short of.
The game currently has a 77% at Game Rankings with only GameSpot disliking it so far. |
Like many rumored system redesigns and concepts over the years (grumbleSegaNeptunegrumble), it's way too cool to actually be real.
Although I suppose there could be a clip on plate to cover the buttons when folded under, but then you're looking at something easily lost by the youngins. |

New Details on Metroid:
Nintendo DS: New Metroid Prime: Hunters Multiplayer Details Seven modes of play, computer controlled bots, and more! By Jordan Ringo - 01-24-06 Metroid Prime: Hunters, originally scheduled for a November 2005 release, was delayed in order to give developers time to add online multiplayer through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection – something that was originally not going to be included in this handheld behemoth. While the delay was a sweet and sour announcement of epic proportions to many Metroid fans, most hard feelings eventually subsided after the thought of competing head to head with gamers around the globe finally sank in. Nonetheless not many details have come forth regarding any specific multiplayer details – until now. Various European media outlets were given the chance yesterday to visit Nintendo’s UK Headquarters. Upon doing so it was revealed that online matches via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection would be able to support up to four players at once. Additionally, Local Area Network multiplayer battles (close-range wireless) would be capable of the same. The only difference is that offline multiplayer boasts computer-controlled players known as "bots". In total there are seven different multiplayer modes to choose from. They are as follows: Battle: This is the most traditional mode of play. Like your standard deathmatch mode, four players will be pitted against one another in a free-for-all competition. Players can either set a limit based on time or number of kills. Survivor: Similar in style to Battle mode, each person battles everyone else. This time around, however, players have a set number of lives. Once a player runs out of their pre-determined number of lives, they lose and enter a "spectator mode" until the last man is standing. Bounty: In the single player mode, an artifact known as the Octolith is a prized possession. In Bounty mode, each player must locate the Octolith and bring it back to their individual base for points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. Capture: Very much like Bounty mode, but players are split into teams. Each team has a base where their Octolith resides. The goal is to capture the opposing team's Octolith and bring it back to your base. However, like your standard capture-the-flag multiplayer games, if your Octolith is stolen you cannot score unless it is safely returned. Prime Hunter: At the beginning of the game, one of the four players is randomly chosen to be the Prime Hunter. The goal is to remain the Prime Hunter for as long as possible. If this player is killed, the person responsible assumes the Prime Hunter position. Defender: Like your typical King of the Hill multiplayer mode, Defender has each gamer competing to control a specified location on the map. Whoever holds the point for the longest total period during the duration of a game session wins. Nodes: In this unique mode of play, various Nodes are scattered throughout the map. Each player must attempt to activate as many Nodes as possible. Once they are activated, they cannot be stolen or activated by an opponent. The player with the most captured Nodes at the end of the match wins the game. Throughout each of these seven modes, various options can be fine-tuned for customized play. For example, gamers can select their weapon set, whether or not "friendly fire" is on, and if the radar should be enabled, to name a few. More exciting is the news that 4 players can have a go at multiplayer from a single game cartridge. This means that if a happy Nintendo DS owner has three friends with DS’s, but none of them have a copy of Metroid Prime: Hunters, this player's friends can simply download the required info and get on with their multiplayer mayhem. The only restriction is that each of said gamer's friends can only play as Samus Aran... which brings us to the topic of selectable characters. As seen at E3 2005, gamers can choose from six different species of bounty hunters besides Samus herself. A description, along with a FMV movie for each character, can be found at the game's official website. Lastly, while Nintendo promises that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection matches can be played with people on and off a given player's Friend List, it is still unknown whether or not specific friends can be chosen from that list. This has been the largest critique of the online component in Mario Kart DS. As of now Metroid Prime: Hunters is scheduled for a March 20, 2006 release. More details are sure to surface as the release draws near. Copyright © 2002-2005 E-mpire Ltd. Co. |

"No plans" for DS redesign at E3 - David Yarnton Tom Bramwell 16:30 25/01/2006 Nintendo UK boss pours yet more cold water on DS redesign rumours Nintendo UK's general manager David Yarnton has reiterated that the company has no plans to announce a redesigned DS unit at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published on the website today, Yarnton said, "If I turned around and said to my staff that we're doing something new they'd probably throttle me." Pressed on the issue of a possible redesign for the high-flying handheld, which recently broke through the one-million-UK-sales barrier, Yarnton said, "That's been rumoured, I don't know for how long, but we haven't got any plans at the moment. Nothing I know of." Yarnton also had encouraging words for retailers, speaking at an event at the Science Museum in London yesterday. "You know, we've got plans for long-term that we're going to invest in it and in the past, I wouldn't say it's been neglected, but change is happening. "I find one of the challenges we have as a company is resource as far as, you know, we've got 16 people at Nintendo UK which I think a lot of people don't realise for the amount of business we do. But we're looking at improving that resource. We don't think we need to grow too much more, it's just being responsive and working closely - as I say we had a trade presentation this morning and we presented to them a number of initiatives as far as simple things like in-store... I mean, we go out to stores and look and we're the poor relation in some respects, so we can't expect them to do that unless we give the more support so we're working in that area." For more on that and Nintendo's ambition for Wi-Fi Connection and Revolution read the full interview on GamesIndustry.biz today. Chris |
No point in putting out a DS redesign at this E3. The big topic for Nintendo is the Revolution. Next year's E3 would be a much better platform for a DS redo.
|
I imagine if they do a redesign, it would come out next holiday season and just be annouced a month or so in advance.
You don't need the big hype machine for a redesign. Just put it on shelves in place of the old model and have some adds pushing the redesign. No need for an E3 unveiling as they need all the focus to be on the Revolution. |
Has Lik-sang ever responded to this whole redesign mess they started?
|
As far as Metroid is concerned I really hope they improve the lobby for the wifi aspect of it. It really stinks in MK but at least the game lends itself better to it. With Metroid I believe that the differences in skill and the options present will make a much bigger difference. We'll see.

Considering it came out only last year it'd be very silly of them to release a redesign so soon. I hope they take their time and do it right. I want to see PSP quality screens and make them larger, then longer battery. Personally I think the size right now is fine. It fits in my hands and pocket nicely.

Why? I wish Nintendo would release an updated model every 6 months, I'd buy it every time. Why? Because they improve for the better.
|
I'm in no rush for a redesign. Like I said, unless it ads an analog stick, or something else that effects gameplay, I'd pass and spend the money on games.
Sure the screens could be better, buttons a little bigger etc., but that's not enough for me to shell out $130-150 for a new model on my grad student budget. :D |

I think the DS is fine. The screens are bright enough and large enough, and the battery lasts 10 hours or so. The PSP has a bigger and brighter screen, but the battery only lasts 3 or 4 hours for games, and IIRC less for movies. So it was a trade off based on existing technology when they made it. Not to mention it costs $100 less than PSP. They could probably put out a model with bigger and brighter screens in the future and get the same battery life due to technology advances. But it wouldn't be because the original wasn't build to stand the test of time, as the original is still fine. But just that technology would have advanced to allow the upgrade with the same battery life at the same price point. |
