PSP interest has suffered because the game library sucks balls (as you pointed out). It had little to nothing to do with the wait.
People were hyped during the wait and excited as hell when the got one and now it's died down and owners are bitching about having nothing to play. |
Will the PS3 play Blu-Ray movies, have they said yet?
I don't know why but I really like the fact that they have included an SD and CF mem slot. I wonder if it will have the same media center features as the XBox 360. |

The PSP was released in Japan in December. 3.5 months later, it was released in the US. The European launch was delayed because of the piracy issues and wanting to ship all with v2.0 firmware. Expect that the PS3 will launch in all territories by winter 2006.

The PS3 media center capabilities are a little different than the 360. With the 360, it is meant to connect to a Windows Media Center. You will be able to stream media from your Windows Media Center PC to your 360. The PS3 will be the center in Sony's setup. You can play all types of media on your PS3, or you can use your PSP to stream media off the PS3. Microsoft has designed it so your Windows Media Center PC is the center of your entertainment center. Sony has designed it so the PS3 is the center. Microsoft has allowed the 360 to access the media on your Windows Media Center, while Sony has allowed the PSP to access the media on your PS3. |
I myself don't mind the wait as I can line up all 3 systems better. I know I'm picking up one of the new systems but am still undecided. Since I was burned by the very first Playstation (heating problems, disc reading problems, etc) and if they take the time to make sure things work when released or to have something better/cheaper all the better.
Granted I'm in a different situation than most as I'm just picking up one for my son. I don't have the free time I used to have :( The only things I can play are a PSP or a DS on my subway ride to work. |

1. The idea of these "set top box" consoles is to eventually control the hometheater marketshare, or a large portion of it. 2. Most people have no knowledge of how to, or no interest in, hooking up their PC to their HT set up in the living room. |

Why would I want to transfer anything to my xbox360 or ps3 for viewing. The exception being the PS3 for watching blu ray movies on. I might not even do that if its going to be cheaper to install a bluray drive on my pc. Are we just supposed to cut our PC out of the loop and use our consoles for everything? Why? |

The possible muse for the new Playstation controller: http://www.vidgames.com/ps/hardware/alpspad.jpg You can also read the review where it is called "the best feel of any controller out there". I remember seeing this before, but for some reason I don't remember posting it in here. - Carmack expressed interest in developing a "Super Doom" for PS3. It was also mentioned that he prefers developing for the Xbox360, which isn't surprising considering how similar the 360 processor is to PC processors. - Itagaki (Team Ninja) has expressed, similar to PS2, that the PS3 is too difficult to program for. Its a tired excuse/double speak for "Microsoft bought us!", but they still haven't announced their prized Ninja Gaiden series as a 360 exclusive. |

Also, is the first game any good? The original for PS2 got: IGN 7.0 Nicely presented, but ultimately shallow, Genji delivers tame action for the short amount of time it lasts. In the end, it's Genji's empowering sense of ninja-like flow that makes Kamui use refreshing. But since all those interactions are canned, slowing time eventually becomes plodding and redundant. It's good then that Genji at least features stylish visuals and amazing music. So while the underlying gameplay may not be exciting, the rest of the package still merits trial. This is a decent first effort from Game Republic, but it doesn't do much to distinguish itself from all the other third-person action games. The story isn't particularly engaging, and the characters aren't developed enough to make you really care about them. Genji looks and sounds great, and the play mechanics are solid enough; but the game is way too short to make it worth more than a rental. |

- Sony says they didn't have any playable games because they wanted attendees to get the same experience with the videos that US gamers had at E3 (IMHO, that is bullshit). - MGS4 trailer was a late addition - Originally, February was going to be the first time gamers would get their hands on the games, that event has now been slotted with a "surpise announcement". |

New fatal inertia trailer (new to me at least). Can't tell if it's CG or in game. Either way it's not super impressive compared to some other stuff I've seen. What's up with the finish line fairies at the end?

If they don't have at least 2x it will be looking fairly sick for them early on... 1x won't support streaming detailed environments, particularly 1080p.

Factor 5 developer presentation for Lair:
http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20...waugh_01.shtml Choice quote: He played a recent extremely high-resolution trailer in real-time, occasionally pausing to swing the camera around or turn on or off various effects. To be fair, the scene in question was clearly a cut-scene, calculated to show off just how many polygons the PS3 can throw around; it's still a lot of polygons, though. Each model, Worch claimed, contained somewhere between 100,000 and 170,000 triangles. Each had a bunch of other special maps and lighting applied, and the main character was built up with "over ten textures". He compared this to an estimated 10,000 for characters in Gears of War and other recent high-res games. The high-res models, meanwhile, that got dithered down to produce the in-game models, ran up around 5,000,000 triangles. |

The only way I see $300 making sense is if they anticipate a MS price drop and are launching at $300 to be competitive. Looks like a big wait and see and thanks for the info. |
From Game-Science.com http://game-science.com/news/001249.php :
Diamond reports developer discontent with PS3 tools The latest issue of Japanese economy magazine, Weekly Diamond, reveals that developers are unhappy with the state of PS3 development tools, and software is likely to be late in coming for the hardware. The article states that PS3 dev tools have only just started shipping to developers this month, while 360 tools were shipped last summer. Furthermore, SCE has not yet announced the price of the console, so developers are unable to predict what audience they are targetting games at. President of Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura, says "We are unlikely to see games exhibiting a level only PS3 can achieve until the end of 2007." The article goes on to compare the benefits of PS2 as a cheap DVD player when it launched in 2000, with PS3's Blu-Ray playback capabilities, the main difference between then and now being that the industry is currently deep in a format-war for next-generation video, and that Blu-Ray movies still don't exist. It is therefore deduced that the number of users who will pick it up as a cheap Blu-Ray player at launch is somewhat smaller, and that sales of game software will be key for the system. |
For smaller developers, I'm sure that they are just getting their dev tools. Larger game developers always get them first. That's not new in the industry.
The announcing the price thing is retarded. Microsoft waited until, what, two months prior to shipping to announce price. I didn't hear developers whinning about that. It's all fluff. I do agree that Blu-Ray will be less of a factor for video only users, but for gamers it could be the feature to tip the scale for them to buy a PS3 over 360 or REV. Its hard to tell how effective the move will be until we get closer to launch. |

On the other hand, Kutagari has said previously that the PS3 would be expensive and that people should want to work extra hours to get one. That kind of talk is the only thing said officially in regards to price and "expensive" is far to vague to plan for. |

If this "news" above is accurate, it could be that Sony has still not divuldged the PS3 price to developers even under NDA. This wouldn't surprise me at all. Despite the fact that it looks like the Hi-def format for DVD's will be blu-ray, there are still a lot of uncertainities in the cost of the hardware itself. Sony is likely working like mad to somehow offer it competively. Estimates put the drives in the 1.2k range currently... |
To be fair, you don't know if Microsoft waited or not. They could have easily informed developers under NDA. In fact, evidence supports that fact in the accurate price rumors that came 6 months prior to the official price release. |
I still cannot see them coming out around $300. Aren't HD-DVD players like $500+ by themselves?
