I just hope we don't see a rash of games like Wrestlemania that required you to have Live to fix all the bugs in it. I'm hoping that was a rare exception and will not become common on the Xbox360.
The extra content could be a negative like I said and it won't appeal to everyone, but I think its a good strategy by MS and probably something Sony will do as well on the PS3.

Backwards compatibility isn't really something I'd save as a surprise. It's not like it's some new, revolutionary feature. It's almost somethign that should be expected of future consoles after the PS2 had it.

I mean, the Xbox, the game, Live kit, broadband access, etc. I'm spending $500 bucks for something and told that I have to work harder. Here's my paradox: How the hell do I work harder on a game when I'm busy busy working to pay for the damn game.
So now my point.
The download content scares the hell out of me because I can really see games giving the advantage to the gamer that has invested the extra dollars to get the latest car, weapon, or whatever. So now again, I'm in a situation that I have to invest money to be on a level playing field.
Furthermore, the thought of games being released prematurally is far more "real" to me. Like so many PC games that get rushed out the door only to try and be "fixed" later, I can see this becoming a problem. Or what of the developer that chooses to specifically release a game shortened because they know they can sell content later on? Surly there is a balance here, I hope it is met and doesn't go the wrong direction it could so easily do.

My assumption (I'm not a video game developer): 2 approaches, either backwards compatibility via hardware or a software emulator, which would require a VERY powerful machine to emulate an Xbox.

Those few pages on Gamespot were a great read. I really enjoyed this part:
The newest iteration of XBOX Live for the XBOX 360 will include enhanced communication options, like "ubiquitous" voice chat. What this means in plain English is that you no longer have to be in the same game session or even in the same game to be able to voice-chat with a friend. You'll be able to send and receive messages and voice chat requests no matter what you're doing on the XBOX. Conceivably, one person could be playing a game while the other could be watching a movie, and both could still chat with each other. Even if you're logged into a four-player split-screen match on one XBOX 360, the system is intelligent enough to send a message request to the correct person on that box (it will illuminate the ring of light on the recipient's controller) so the other three people can continue to play while the social butterfly attends to his messages.
It's the little tweaks and features that I winning me over more and more. I'm sure the system is going to be amazing and the games will look good. I'm just glad there will be so many little things to do on Live and with the system in general.

Live is definitely where the magic is with this system. I like the online community aspect of it and MS is really expanding it big time with the new console. I think Sony will copy it somewhat, but Xbox Live is what is going to set them apart from everyone else and it may be a big part of their success or failure this time out.
Communicating with friends, playing games with them online, just going to watch other people play games online, downloading tons of extra content like demos and add-ons and integration with your PC. They are really doing just about everything with Live and the wireless aspects of the system that you could ask for.

MS is definitely doing everything right in that area. Online gamers should be in for a treat with the 360.
I'm even mildly intrigued about it and I don't like multiplayer gaming and can't get broadband (have satellite with year contract, and DSL isn't available at my place for some reason).

Yeah. I just did it because of their trade-4-get-an-extra-40% credit that is going on thru the 18th. I traded some extra xbox controllers that were gathering dust and a game or two. You usually get $10 per controller but this raised it to $14.

I used to feel the same way...until I now see how almost impossible it is to get a couple of friends in the same room at the same time at a decent hour to play a few hours of video games. As console gamers get older I see online play becoming the standard and playing with a friend in the same room becoming passe' (except for teen-agers who have the time).

2 years ago all the guys who worked for me would come over and we'd have a great time. This year I have two of those guys left. In another year who knows but I do know that those with Live will never be that far away at all and I welcome anything that adds to the experience when we play.
I'm married, with no kids and my wife is great about having people over but we still can't get together like the old days.

I've just never been very competitive with games for one, and on top of that most of the game genre's a enjoy are single player only affairs like platformers and japanese RPGs.
But like you, I have a ton of respect for what MS is doing in the online arena. It's a great setup for those into multiplayer and online gaming. And as others have said, great for those with kids, friends that have moved away etc.

However, I totally agree it is hard to meet up with friends to play games so I probably will dabble more and more with online. For some reason playing multiplayer on the DS and PSP interests me a lot more than consoles so that may be my gateway there. My biggest obstacle is probably the fact most people play FPS and Sports games online and I never find those fun to play that way. As weird as it sounds the idea of finding people to play Bridge and Chess online with on the DS (with the Ultimate games coming out) interests me a lot. (If I can find anyone that is)

As I mentioned in previous threads, Halo 3 has now been confirmed to not be a launch title, but will rather be released at the same time as the PS3.
So don't expect to see any footage of it at E3.
"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

Good, maybe that will force Sony to launch with some games worth playing this time and it won't be like the PS2 with nothing remotely worth shelling out $300 for a console to play until Gran Turismo 3 came out 6 months or so after launch.

I like this strategy for a couple reasons.
First, it will give them time to really do Halo 3 up. I'm guessing they'll take the same engine and just revamp the hell out of it for the next gen system. Then Halo 4 will be the new egnine.
Since Sony's exact launch date is a mystery, they can put Halo 3 out there whenever PS3 comes out. If PS3 goes out earlier, so does Halo 3. If PS3 goes out later, so does Halo 3.
Finally, I imagine they could put a $50 price drop on Xbox 360 to tie it in with the PS3 launch. Now you have the lowest priced next gen console. Plus you could do other tie ins like a Halo 3 version of the console that is bundled with Halo 3. Crazy stuff like that.
They have a lot fo work to do if they want to have a chance in the next generation, but I like their battle plan. Luckily for us gamers, like Josh Hinkle mentioned above, it will force Sony to have some good titles at launch, not half baked demo games that involve shooting fireworks. IMO they need to launch with something killer like GTA 4 with totally new engine.

They will use these games to extend the life of the PS2 until the PS3 is released. It makes consumers pick between a $50 game they love for a system they already own, or a $300 system + $50 game for Xbox360.
This is actually a more difficult decision for consumers than next year if Microsoft is $50 cheaper on the console side. $300 for Xbox360+Halo3 is not that different than $350 for PS3+game.

This also goes the other way. Sony will be throwing huge games out this fall to compete with Xbox360. Socom III, Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts 2, etc. These games have huge sales potential and they know it.
The only thing that Sony could do to trump Xbox 360 is Grand Theft Audio 4 when Xbox 360 launches.
Also a $50 drop may or may not happen, but they'd be stupid not to do a Halo 3 bundle for $300 with a different looking console, and take some of the wind out of the PS3 sails.
As a gamer, I'd like them to have equal marketshare this time. If Xbox 360 is smoked again, we probably won't see an Xbox 720, and unless someone stepped in to compete against Sony (unlikely) it would be a bad day for gamers, even gamers who only like Sony & want to play Sony games.

Yeah, theres' a lot of good games coming out on the current consoles this fall.
I couldn't imagine buying a new console this year. Even if Nintendo came out with one and a Mario, Metroid and Zelda game I'd still probably pass for now.
Too little money and too many good games coming out on the systems I already own, not to mention games I own and haven't played and games I haven't got around to picking up yet.
I'll be more than happy and occupied with my GC, PS2, X-box and DS until AT LEAST fall 2006. And hopefully that will continue in to 2007 and the first price drops on the PS3 or Revolution and first or 2nd on the 360.
