Not true. You can still have wireless LAN gaming with enough players to call it a party.

The edges of objects look blurrier (is this a word?) when playing it on a 720 or 1080 HDTV. This is why I pull out my Sony SDTV tube to play it. On the other hand, Half Life looks so sweet in 768 lines and higher resolution.
Sound goes to Halo 2. Right from the beginning the orchestration of the soundtrack and main theme are quite memorable. I'm sure you can hum Halo's main theme song if you wanted to. I can't even tell you what Half Life 2 sounds like.
The Havok engine is so damn good I think the game was designed just to show it off. I mean, size, weight, buoyancy, friction, distance, angle of projection, etc. All these things come into play in Half Life 2 and are believable. Now lets look at Halo 2...the MC feels like he is floating when he jumps.
Gameplay, well, I had more fun dual wielding in Halo 2 than I did with the gravity gun in Half Life 2. The gravity gun just got interesting for the last couple of levels but it was already a little too late.

I can always give you the number to my pharmacist if you're still interested.
iI agree both games that I used as an example are great for what they're on, and sound on half life two and counter strike source is just as impressive as halo 2 IMO, but I’m running an SB platinum and a gigaworks speaker set. The thing that jerks me most about this whole thing is I game on both so I can play the games I want to play. I had halo pc before I had an Xbox so that shows you I was behind, now if I had played halo Xbox before hand I never would have gotten the pc version. Gearbox totally ass rammed a great game. That is why I am happy to see valve doing their own convert of half life 2 to Xbox and doom 3 was a great convert as well, but I have the pc version and didn't like it much anyway. One game though I can tell you look awesome on both is star wars republic commando. the Xbox in HD looks great, but my PC with everything turned up and on at max res 1280*1024 17" DVI LCD. Looks so good it makes me want to hug a wookie.

To say the least I game on everything but anything Nintendo makes, the hay day of Mario is long dead and they haven't done anything I’d like to play beside Mario kart.

Apparently this IS Half Life 2 (no wonder it looks like it). Its a user made map called DM_Depot Beta by Robert Briscoe.

You're right...I searched for that HL2 map in Google and came up with this screenshot:

I hope Perfect Dark will not disappoint. Honestly I still sometimes play this game on the 64. It is absolutely painful with multiplayer the framerate is absolutely horrendous. I thought it was pretty innovative. The secondary weapons function and host of options lent many a late night. I actually like this game more than most of todays FPSs. If they don't screw it up and make it like every other FPS it just might be a system seller.

That and backwards compatability. Is there a final word on this yet? Will it be backwards compatable if you purchase the HD option?

Kind of lame that the barebones one is only $60 less than the one with the DVD burner, HDD, etc. for those like me that don't want the DVD burner, Tivo etc.

Looks like I'll just wait for that one to hit $200 (my limit for consoles) or less before even thinking of picking one up.

Not much point in getting the barebones one to save $60. Of course maybe later on it will drop in price more than the other one, guess we'll see.

I was hoping the prices would be $200-250 for the barebones, $300-350 for the high end model.

But if these game lists are an indication of what the game line up is going to be like (i.e. mainly appeal to PC gamers like this gen) then it's a moot point for me anyway. But with all the rumors of increased Japanese support for the 360 I'll wait and see what else is annouced.

Well I'd have to say $360 is pretty darn close to what you were hoping for.

I want to wait, but I think I'm going to start saving some pennies for the fall. Skip some fast food here and there at $5 a pop and I'll be there in no time!

Yeah, but I wasn't considering the full model at all.

I'm more dissapointed that the standalone is $100 more than I was really hoping for. I was really hoping for $199 and $50 or so to get an HDD add on and backwards compatibility.

Now it sounds like $299 and no HD add on (unless I'm misunderstanding on the latter).

I have to admit the difference is so slight I think MS might have been better off just releasing the $360 version. However, I understand why they did it. That $299 price point is kind of important. Every console that launched above it failed badly. They want to make sure and get as much of the market as possible. I'm betting most people that get the $299 model end up with the HDD anyway unless its not available as an add on.

Frankly, expecting a new console (bare bones or otherwise) to be priced at $199 at launch is pretty unrealistic. Sounds like you were setting yourself up for disappointment from the get-go.

I'd be surprised if any console this generation is below $300. The Nintendo one might be $250 but I wouldn't hold my breath for a $200 model.

Wow! You're a little too optimistic there.
Even at $299.99, how much do you figure they're making on the console?

Looking at the rumoured specs, surely they are making a loss again, even without the HD. But hard to say for sure.

All consoles make losses when first released - unless they are released by Nintendo. Nintendo is notorious for never taking a loss on their consoles, which is sort of a necessity if you think about it. Companies like Microsoft and Sony try to make back that money through accessory and software sales. Nintendo, which doesn't have as many selling titles as MS or Sony, can't rely on that factor as much. Not a slam against Nintendo - just an observation.

I know Sony finally broke even a few years after launch, but I'm not sure if Microsoft ever did. Sony continued that trent with the PSP. They are taking huge losses on the hardware, but plan on making it up with accessory and game sales. Eventually, they will break even and anything beyond that is pure profit. Its a risky business model, but necessary for this business.

With the aggressive nature of Microsoft's price cuts, we may see a slight price cut within the first year. Then again, they could continue to sell it at $300-$360 for 1.5 years and force Sony to cut the price on their 6 month old console at E3 2007.

The latter would probably be the better strategy since they will be unchallenged for a full year.

Well, the GC launched at $199 so there's a chance the Revolution will as well, but I concede that is unlikely.

And I'm not really setting myself up for dissapointment as I don't plan on buying any of the 3 at launch.

But the cheaper at launch means the cheaper at first price drop, so I was hoping for $250 at most for the 360 at launch so it would problably hit $200 in a year.

But they'll charge the most people are willing to pay, and early adopters are hardcore gamers who are willing to pay more.

I just can't bring myself to pay more than $200 for a console being a pretty casual gamer as that's already a good chunk of change that could go toward my other hobbies.

No offense, but you sure do post a lot in a video game forum for a casual gamer.

I post from work, no way to game here.

And keep in mind this is a DVD site and my main hobbies are movies, sports and music, so this site gets most of my web time as I can keep up to speed on all those in the appropriate forums, as well my secondary hobbies like games and books.

That said, I used to be a hardcore gamer, so I'm still very interested. It's the direction gaming has taken the past couple gens that has turned me into a casual gamer. But I still like to discuss it, especially the next gen stuff as I'd love to see a lot of innovation that might rekindle my interest.

So are the FPS games on the "MTV" show all that's they're going to have at E3 as well? I hope they've got a bit more to show next week and for God's sake a little variety. If they're only a few months from launch there's got to be more software to show.

Well, Perfect Dark Zero is pretty much confirmed to be there. Besides that, I wouldn't be surprised to see yet another DOA title and possible a sequel to Ninja Gaiden from Tecmo. You won't see Halo (maybe a teaser), because I believe that game will be released when Sony launches the PS3. Maybe a Mechassault or Crimson Skies. Besides that, there will probably a Tony Hawk game (big surprise there) and a bunch of other games you won't care about.

I'm basically the exact same way. Grew up addicted to games. Still buy systems at launch and games but really don't play them too much unless I get hooked on a game, which hasn't happened in a while. This forum is great cause I can discuss many of my interests in the same place (games, DVD's, movies, sports...etc). I also sit in front of a computer all day at work, so I'm here a lot.
