Gamestop or EB should still have demo's unless employees are the ones Ebaying. RE 4 is now second on gamestats.com list of highest rated games (behind Zelda: OoT and ahead of Soul Calibur). It's that good.

Just started playing last night, I must say I am impressed. I really think Capcom needed to take the series in a new direction, and they definitely have. The battles are intense, and I have just been fighting villagers so far. I am a little over an hour in, just got past part where you first meet the shopkeeper and fight some villagers on bridges (chapter 1-2?). Never saw the chainsaw guy, maybe I am not that far yet.
Some changes were real simple but I think make the game much more enjoyable for me. Ample bullets and save points make this more an action game, but with so many villagers coming at you it still keeps the "survival" aspect.
I also like the much more open environments rather than the hallways and narrow streets of previous games. It makes it much more enjoyable, especially with the more agile villagers as opposed to zombies.

This is the greatest game ever(for me, of course).

I just reached Chapter 5-2 last night. I just did one of the greatest action scenes ever in a videogame and one of the best Boss battles ever.

Enjoying the game so far. One complaint... the merchant has every weapon under the sun, but he can't sell me any ammo??? WTF?
I haven't read any spoilers, but I'm seriously hoping we can win an unlimited Magnum or Grenade Launcher for beating the game under certain settings (like in previous games). That's my favorite thing from the past RE games: the ability to go back through the game and blast the hell out of everything with one shot.

As mentioned above, learn to use the pistol/kick combo, and also be sure to use the knife whenever an enemy is on the ground.

argh I'm at a part that is really pissing me off.
Any tips? I just don't see how this part is doable given the weapons I have (riot gun, Red9, and not much else).

If anything, trying going to a previous save point and conserving more of your heavy duty ammo.
For the longest time I was stuck at the last act of Chapter 3 where...
Spoiler:
After I figured this out, last part of that act really creeped me out. Man I love this game.

Shoot, RUN, shoot, RUN, shoot RUN. Keep doing that til they're all dead. If you're getting cornered, a good idea is to aim for the kneecaps, make them all fall over, and make a beeline to somewhere safe. That's my best suggestion for any situation where you're being overrun by guys.
If Ashley is there, running isn't always a good idea, so just aim for the kneecaps with your pistol, and use the shotgun when a bunch are close to you. If you're low on ammo though, well, that sucks.

I have two questions for those past Chapter 1 (basically 2 and beyond). Are there any of the treasures or items you find that should be kept and not sold to the merchant? (Beyond the ones that go into your key items automatically).
Also after the lake... (Spoiler....)

once you get across the lake, does it matter if you go back to the merchant on the other side of the lake before or after the waterfall? I Tried going back to get the boat after going through the falls and it was much harder with dogs and such.

I have never gone back to visit the Merchant, because he keeps appearing in new places as the game progresses.

Thanks Kingsmoth. The merchant on the other side of the lake (to the left) - I never visited him - is there really a reason to? (I'd have to go back to a save game from a bit ago). Going back through the dock area there were wolves and all sorts of nasty stuff that wasn't there the first time.

I don't see a point in going to the guy across the lake. I went to him before going to the falls, and he didn't really have anything special that you won't find with the other guys. There might've been a couple barrels to smash open though, I can't recall exactly.

Can you guys explain to me how to effectively do the pistol/kick combo??
I shoot the zombies and they stagger and I walk up to kick them but nothing happens and I end up getting attacked.
Is there a sure fire way to do this??
Also, whats a good way to open the boxes and kill the snakes before they bite you?

The pistol/kick combo isn't a given, sometimes you can't get there before they quit staggering around. I like to shoot them in the knees, which either makes them fall completely to the ground or to go on one knee. If they go to the ground, i knife them to death. If they go to a knee, kick them, and then knife them to death. As far as the boxes go, I'd just use my knife and keep hitting the button in case it is a snake. Be careful not to slice the egg that the snake would leave behind though!
And to get Ashley to give you heck about looking up her skirt, tell her to "stay" at the top of the tall tower and jump down. (early town in the game.) Wonder why she says this when she tries to lead Leon on by touching her chest when you just stand there for a minute, lol.

well i followed the tips posted here and i was able to do pretty well with the section i was having trouble with but i still couldn't pass it. I think buying the Blacktail (the 15 shot capacity 9mm) helped as I could cap them in the knees very easily. However,
