Gromit - maybe try renting it?

I also couldn't get into the other REs, but I am loving this one (with a few minor quibbles). I did like Eternal Darkness, though.

Gamestop or EB should still have demo's unless employees are the ones Ebaying. RE 4 is now second on gamestats.com list of highest rated games (behind Zelda: OoT and ahead of Soul Calibur). It's that good.

I'll give that a shot. I've never had good luck renting games, I always end up checking a couple of stores over and over waiting for the game I'm interested in to show back up. It's worth checking though and I do have a $5 Blockbuster gift card.

Just started playing last night, I must say I am impressed. I really think Capcom needed to take the series in a new direction, and they definitely have. The battles are intense, and I have just been fighting villagers so far. I am a little over an hour in, just got past part where you first meet the shopkeeper and fight some villagers on bridges (chapter 1-2?). Never saw the chainsaw guy, maybe I am not that far yet.

Some changes were real simple but I think make the game much more enjoyable for me. Ample bullets and save points make this more an action game, but with so many villagers coming at you it still keeps the "survival" aspect.

I also like the much more open environments rather than the hallways and narrow streets of previous games. It makes it much more enjoyable, especially with the more agile villagers as opposed to zombies.

Wait until you reach Chapter 3, that's when the "survival" aspect really kicks in...
This is the greatest game ever(for me, of course).

Im on chapter 2-2 what guns should I have in my inventory? Right now I have the punisher, the shotgun, the TMP and the rifle. Having 4 guns seems a little too much.

Lose the TMP. There is no reason what-so-ever to even use that gun. The only use the TMP has is to sell whatever ammo you pick up for it. The other three guns are all you need....for now. Remember use your pistol/kick combo as much as you can. This will save you the shotgun ammo you will need later on.

I just reached Chapter 5-2 last night. I just did one of the greatest action scenes ever in a videogame and one of the best Boss battles ever.

I disagree. I kept the TMP, and it's a solid weapon. You can get along fine without it, but you find lots of ammo for it. And since you can't buy ammo, I prefer to just use the weapon rather than just waste the ammo and sell it off. If you upgrade it's pretty powerful and it's nice to a have a fully automatic weapon to just mow shit down. But...I think each person will find they have their own preferences. One of the great things about this game...it's got a lot of variety in how you play it.

Enjoying the game so far. One complaint... the merchant has every weapon under the sun, but he can't sell me any ammo??? WTF?

I haven't read any spoilers, but I'm seriously hoping we can win an unlimited Magnum or Grenade Launcher for beating the game under certain settings (like in previous games). That's my favorite thing from the past RE games: the ability to go back through the game and blast the hell out of everything with one shot.

In my game I've only been carrying the Punisher, Shotgun and Rifle. In the game I'm playing at my friends house, I've also been carrying the TMP, but have only used it a few times. It is useful in clearing a crowd because you want to conserve shotgun ammo for later in the game.
As mentioned above, learn to use the pistol/kick combo, and also be sure to use the knife whenever an enemy is on the ground.

argh I'm at a part that is really pissing me off.
Spoiler:
I just beat the "wolverine" guy in the prison and have now made it to the little reflecting pool where there are hordes of guys. I have no idea how I can possibly beat all these guys.
Any tips? I just don't see how this part is doable given the weapons I have (riot gun, Red9, and not much else).

I tried to clear out the room first, then trigger "something", then go back to the pool room. Either there are just a ton of guys to begin with, or it's a neverending horde until you complete a certain part. I had a lot of pistol ammo (the pistol that starts with a B, don't remember the name), some shotgun ammo for the riot gun, and a little bit of rifle ammo for my auto-rifle. Died the first time, so when I replayed it...
Spoiler:
I just ran straight for the room to trigger the crank, only killing guys who were an immediate threat, then I let Ashley work the crank while I tried to keep us safe.

If anything, trying going to a previous save point and conserving more of your heavy duty ammo.

For the longest time I was stuck at the last act of Chapter 3 where...
Spoiler:
Ashley is stuck in the wall trap. The first time I went through it, I tried to shoot the metal rings holding her captive, thinking they'd break. But I guess the bullet went through the metal and killed Ashley. I tried again, just in case I accidentally missed the metal and shot her, but the same thing happened. So I figured that wasn't what you were supposed to do. I ran around the room for at least 30 minutes, double and triple checking everything, but nothing. I tried going out the only door you can leave (where the merchant is) to see if I skipped anything. I gave up for the day, and tried it again today. Again, for at least 30 minutes I checked everything again. Finally, I just tried shooting the rings again, but this time at the part where the metal is connected to the wall, and it worked! I really wish Capcom had made it so that if you shoot any part of the metal ring, it would break.

After I figured this out, last part of that act really creeped me out. Man I love this game.

Shoot, RUN, shoot, RUN, shoot RUN. Keep doing that til they're all dead. If you're getting cornered, a good idea is to aim for the kneecaps, make them all fall over, and make a beeline to somewhere safe. That's my best suggestion for any situation where you're being overrun by guys.

If Ashley is there, running isn't always a good idea, so just aim for the kneecaps with your pistol, and use the shotgun when a bunch are close to you. If you're low on ammo though, well, that sucks.

Spoiler:
I used the handgun, shotgun, and rifle for this section, but you can get away with just the handgun and shotgun.
With the first wave I used the rifle and popped off a few guys before the rest got too close. If you don't have a rifle, either try and snipe a few with the handgun, or wait until they crowd you and hit them with the riot gun. Make sure to keep an eye on the guy coming up on the right side, I forgot about him and he's the one that nailed me. Be certain to take out the shields, you don't want to deal with them in a crowd.
Once Ashley started the cranks, I would simply run around avoiding the guys. I would keep an eye on Ashley, and when a guy got near her I would shoot him in the leg with the pistol if I needed a quick shot, rifle if I had the time to scope. I eventually got overrun by guys, so I popped them all in the legs as they surrounded me, then took off and kept the pattern going. She was grabbed a few times, but I was able to make it through only being hit once.

I have two questions for those past Chapter 1 (basically 2 and beyond). Are there any of the treasures or items you find that should be kept and not sold to the merchant? (Beyond the ones that go into your key items automatically).

Also after the lake... (Spoiler....)

once you get across the lake, does it matter if you go back to the merchant on the other side of the lake before or after the waterfall? I Tried going back to get the boat after going through the falls and it was much harder with dogs and such.

The only treasures that should be kept are the ones that have openings to place jewels into, which will greatly increase the value.
I have never gone back to visit the Merchant, because he keeps appearing in new places as the game progresses.

Thanks Kingsmoth. The merchant on the other side of the lake (to the left) - I never visited him - is there really a reason to? (I'd have to go back to a save game from a bit ago). Going back through the dock area there were wolves and all sorts of nasty stuff that wasn't there the first time.

I don't see a point in going to the guy across the lake. I went to him before going to the falls, and he didn't really have anything special that you won't find with the other guys. There might've been a couple barrels to smash open though, I can't recall exactly.

One time Ashley was on a platform above me and I looked up her skirt. She covered herself and said "Hey! What are you looking at!".

I'm such a perv.

Can you guys explain to me how to effectively do the pistol/kick combo??

I shoot the zombies and they stagger and I walk up to kick them but nothing happens and I end up getting attacked.

Is there a sure fire way to do this??

Also, whats a good way to open the boxes and kill the snakes before they bite you?

The pistol/kick combo isn't a given, sometimes you can't get there before they quit staggering around. I like to shoot them in the knees, which either makes them fall completely to the ground or to go on one knee. If they go to the ground, i knife them to death. If they go to a knee, kick them, and then knife them to death. As far as the boxes go, I'd just use my knife and keep hitting the button in case it is a snake. Be careful not to slice the egg that the snake would leave behind though!

And to get Ashley to give you heck about looking up her skirt, tell her to "stay" at the top of the tall tower and jump down. (early town in the game.) Wonder why she says this when she tries to lead Leon on by touching her chest when you just stand there for a minute, lol.

well i followed the tips posted here and i was able to do pretty well with the section i was having trouble with but i still couldn't pass it. I think buying the Blacktail (the 15 shot capacity 9mm) helped as I could cap them in the knees very easily. However,
Spoiler:
I got to the point where you have to boost ashley up onto the ledge so she can turn the second crank. Guys kept coming for her and I was out of rifle bullets and I kept missing so they dragged her away
