I can't wait to play this game but have no choice. It doesn't get released at my end of the world until March. But hey, a game that good can only look better in PAL resolution, right? (just trying to console myself)

Are the controls that much improved? I have read the reviews, but most are written from he perspective of someone who has played RE games from the get go. The first time I attempted a RE game was the remake on the GameCube.

I was in the same boat as you. When the Resident Evils first came out, I used to love watching my friends play it, but, I could not get over the tank like controls. It bugged the hell out of me that I could not just turn around on a dime, instead, I have to stop, spin around on an axis, then walk foward again.

I am only 20 minutes into the game, but, I do not feel the controls are much improved in this respect. It still controls much like a tank. I will say that the are improved. The camera stays behind you which is nice, but, like a previous poster said, a strafe option is desperately missing.

I do not mean to turn you away from this game, so far it has been an awesome experience, and since the controls are better, I think it's a great game. I just don't feel the tank like movements have been taken out. I still wish it controled more like eternal darkness. Ah well, definitely go out and get it if you're on the fence.

That tin and prologue book are not worth $20.

But thats only at Fry's. Typically everywhere else the game is $49.99 like any other new release. So the Gamestop Collector's Edition is only 10 bucks extra.

Josh H 01-12-05 02:20 PM

It was also that price at outpost.com, so anyone could order it for that price.

Leechboy 01-12-05 02:22 PM

Is the Collector's Edition sold out already? It is going for $70+ on ebay.

No, not at all. I was just at Gamestop, picking up Mercinaries and they had STACKS of the RE4 tins. And none of them were for pre-orders.

PokerMan 01-12-05 04:22 PM

yes but the Tin from gamestop is limited , to only 48,000 , only while supplies last it not something that will always be on the shelves to buy....

so if ya want it go get it before the weekend hits.. and people get payed..

plus you can no longer order it from there webpage... so good luck all..

asianxcore 01-12-05 07:18 PM

picked up my pre-order from EB games today. hopefully I'll get a chance to play this weekend. got the making of resident evil 4 DVD with my pre-order, as well as the playable demo when I first pre-ordered it a couple weeks ago. not too bad for 49.99

Thanks for the link.
This was a nice read, time consuming, but very well put together.

Holy crap this game is good. I've only played for a little bit, but god damn is it a good time. I had my reservations about no zombies, but I could care less now. Atmospheric, great control, love the ability to buy stuff, and hot damn is shooting things fun. So far, I'd say this exceeded my expectations, and I'm a die hard Resident Evil fan. This more than makes up for the long wait we've had for this game.

that's just not true. the controls are nothing like tankesque! my story...i have had the Gamecube since debut and was ok with most the games, especially Metroid, but the games were all fruity and no real Mature games (I am not sure if "Eternal Darkness" came before or after the first RE-make) but I was eagerly anticipating "Resident Evil" for the cube, having never played or really heard of the series prior. It looked awesome in previews and it was horror and true M rating. I couldn't wait. I got it first day, put it in and hated it immediately. I never played a game like this and the control was just so frustrating. I gave it maybe 30 minutes and then sold it outright, never to have another RE game again. Then I read and saw previews for this in videos and said this looks different and more to my control liking. i like the standard 3rd person control scheme like ED which i got and loved to death. then the first day i was interested which was like last week (not even knowing it was coming out this week) i went to Gamestop, put down $5.00 and they had and gave me the demo disc. i popped it in and loved it right off the bat. played it many times which for me to play anything more than 30 minutes lately is something special.
i loved the controls, the look, and the shooting constantly. i knew this was my new game. haven't played the full version that i got yesterday, bu i can't wait and know it will be just more of the giddy same fun that i have always loved in every other game before it.

REbirth came out about two months before Eternal Darkness.
I didn't even have a GC but I pre-ordered REbirth when it was announced and it sat on my shelf until the GC price drop in May.
Anyway, I played last night up to the lake(awesome sequence), messed around a bit then killed myself. The game is quite challenging compared to other RE's, which is great. Upgrading weapons is a nice feature. I'm glad to say I've only encountered two puzzles so far(both very simple), and that there has been tons of action going on keeping the pace way up.
Spoiler:
It was funny having an interactive cutscene - I sat the controller down when the scene with Leon and Luis started, then when the guy came in with the axe it started flashing "press A/B to dodge", so I had to quickly nab the controller off the floor before I got owned.

So far this game has far exceeded my expectations, and looks to bump itself into my "best game ever" position, previously held by REbirth.

sniper308 01-13-05 11:03 AM

Picked it up last night at GameRush with their trade 3 get any new game for $29.99 deal plus you get the credit from the trade. I also got an RE4 T shirt with it (totally unexpected as I did not pre-order).

I have been a fan of the series for a long time and like others have posted picked up the RE remake before I even had a cube.

Looking forward to playing it.

slop101 01-13-05 02:02 PM

I kind of wish you could control the camera, swinging it around and stuff - it should've been easy to implement since everything is in real-time - it's a small nit-pick though, especially since the placement of the camera makes the controls finally work right.

"In Soviet Russia, camera controls you."

msdmoney 01-13-05 02:13 PM

I picked my pre-order up at gamerush last night, but haven't had a chance to play it yet, and probably won't til next week. They were out of free shirts for pre-orders, but I didn't care, I didn't even know I was supposed to get a shirt.

nickdawgy 01-13-05 06:01 PM

I just got back from out of town, gonna go pick it up today

Glad to hear people are liking it.

darkside 01-13-05 08:07 PM

This game just gets better and better. I can only play it in small doses though. It is just too intense to play for hours at a time. I'm on chapter 2-2 now and can't wait to spend the weekend trying to finish it.

Best game I have played in awhile.

sixerb 01-14-05 01:59 AM

You guys are lucky! I live south of Indianapolis, and they didn't receive their shipments yesterday! So now I have to wait until in the morning to try to pick it up again!! Oh well, more time to play MP2 before it collects dust in the wake of this game.

slop101 01-14-05 08:47 AM

I can't think of a more intense video-game moment than getting decapitated by the chainsaw guy for the first time.

It's one of those moments that I had to yell for my non-video-game-playing roomate to come and check out - he was impressed.

slop101 01-14-05 10:09 AM

Oh, and today's PA is sorta relevant:

Once again, Penny Arcade generates not a speck of laughter.

Probably won't be as intense for the rest of us, now that it won't be unexpected!

Please use spoiler tags.

darkside 01-14-05 10:46 AM

I'm starting Chapter 3 and some of these boss battles so far have been unbelievable. My hands were shaking after finally getting past the one at the end of 2-3. You really have to get your reflexes ready at all times since dodging is almost as important as shooting in this game.

Sad that I am probably playing the game of the year for 05 in January. Every action game after this will probably seem mediocre.

Are you fucking kidding me?

There's a guy running at you with a chainsaw - it's even on the cover.
What the hell else did you think was going to happen?
Jeeze!

Well, perhaps just damage? I didn't know they'd actually show a decapitation.

I haven't received my copy yet, so if it isn't too much to ask, please use spoiler tags on plot/scary/intense moments.
