For the guys who really like this game, I really recommend the original Syphon Filter for those who have not played it. I can't believe how much playing this game reminds me of playing it.
Of course it has PS1 graphics, but I never cared much about that sort of thing.

Holy CRAP! This game is intense and hard as hell. I've never seen a game jump into the action like this... Getting attacked by 20 villagers at one time, each person taking 2-5 shots to kill them.
I'm not sure I'm good enough to play this game.

I'm still struggling through it.
Saved at the start of Chapter 4-1, but haven't touched it for a couple of weeks.
I got through chapter 3 without too many problems though, and I'm doing pretty good on Ammo, so I plan to keep plugging away.
I'm still a bit underwhelmed, but I definitely like it more than past games in the series. Still not my cup of tea though really.

That first part, when you first get in the village, and the villagers all come at you (including one or two chainsaw guys), was a total bitch when I first played it.
I eventually developed a strategy where I would run around, collecting as much ammo and health as I could, and when I did that, I'd barricade myself in the house between the cow barn and the church. In there, they can only come at you from one direction, and it should be easier to pick them off, provided you don't run out of ammo.
But that's just one way to do it. There are a couple of other dead ends there, too--which are also good places to set up shop once you've got all your stuff.
The shotgun, on the second-floor of the two-story house, is a good thing to pick up, but doing so also triggers one of the chainsaw guys, so whether that's worth it or not is up to you.
Hope you stick with it--it really is an amazing game, once you get into it. Easily in my top three from the last generation.

I'll stick with it.. though I think I'd enjoy it more if it was less frantic. It only cost me $8.65 though.. so it's hard to complain. The graphics are amazing for last generation though.

A couple of tips I'd recommend would be to practice shooting the humanoid enemies in the legs, and then to run up and kick them when they drop to their knees. This should save you some precious ammo on your first play-through.
I'd also suggest buying the treasure maps when they're available to you. They seem expensive, but you'll make it all back plus some when you use them to find all the hidden treasures, which you can then sell for much-needed weapon upgrades.
And try to shoot all fifteen blue medallions, instead of the requested amount (ten?) to get a nice little bonus.

It was easy for me because I love shooting games, so picking up the controller and capping ganados in the head was like second nature for me.
The village was the hardest part in the game, so you are past the hardest part. Yeah it is kind of weird that they would put the hardest section in the game at the beginning. There are a few other segments that can be challenging but nothing like the village.
I agree with MWB's tips. Shooting them in the legs to make them stumble, and then kicking them is very effectve when they are in groups since your kick will hit them all and knock them all down. When you are fighting one or two at a time, I prefer to go for headshots since you hit their weak spot for massive damage Sony style.

Yup, definitely looks at some FAQs if you need to. I was struggling with this game until I developed some better strategies of fighting. For example, if you just stand there and keep shooting your gun, you're probably gonna die. You need to run away sometimes, you need to shoot them in the legs too. That will either bring them to their knees where you can run up and smash 'em to the ground, or if they fall over you can whoop out your knife and slash away to conserve ammo. Once I mastered these tips I was able to finish the game w/o too much problem. Still took me about a year though cause the game scared the crap outta me, haha...

Yeah, it definitely does get easier (aside from boss battles) after the village.
You rarely get that overwhelmed, and you'll have a lot more weapons and ammo.
I needed to pick it up again and pound through the last couple of chapters.

Most people complain that RE4 had very few scares compared to the previous games. IMO, the only real problem with RE4 is that it abandoned the "survival horror" and became a pure action game.
If you thought RE4 was scary, go play the Cube remake of the original game. RE4 will seem like a Disney cartoon in comparison.

Chainsaw wielding maniacs, one swipe and you're dead. Hearing the villagers yell in the distance, freaky cause they are fast little buggers, unlike the zombies from previous games. The creepy monks in the castle with that ominous music. Getting trapped in the house and all those villagers breaking in... People scare differently and this game was definitely unnerving, haha...

Ok. I finally got a shotgun. Nice. I've gotten a little further now, but I just suck. I'm always getting hurt. I think next time I see a merchant I'll just invest in a lot of first aid spray.

You could have gotten the shotgun for free in the village at the beginning. I wouldn't spend too much money on first aid sprays or you might not have enough to upgrade your weapons later on. Are you picking up the herbs? They refill your life too.

Of course it has PS1 graphics, but I never cared much about that sort of thing.

Did you guys see that according to a recent Famitsu, Capcom will soon be re-releasing RE4 for the Wii, at least in Japan?
Pity the Resident Evil fanatic. Not only has the poor guy had to buy two chainsaw controllers and brave two Resident Evil movies (and now suffers cold sweats anticipating the third), but according to Famitsu, he'll now have to buy a third version of Resident Evil 4, this time for Wii.
An intrepid NeoGAF member translated the info from the most recent issue of the Japanese magazine. The new version (presumably the unannounced game that Capcom hinted at last month) uses the Wiimote for aiming, naturally, but also uses it for stabbing zombies, as God intended. There's no word yet on whether or not it will reach North America, but a listing for the game briefly appeared on Gamestop's site, and the thing's already been localized once, so it would seem like a lock.
The scans say that the game will also include a trailer for Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles which we know is due out before the end of 2007. Also, the Gamestop listing had the game set for June 25, so maybe you'll be whiling the summer days away holed up, slashing zombies -- suntan be damned!
