Turn off Anti-Aliasing. You don't need it and it's a big hit on your framerate.

How do I do that?

System>Advance On the Doom 3 menu

Thanks.

Man, this game freaks me out sometimes. Nothing like walking down a hall and hearing someone whisper "Come over here" out of my rear speakers. I'm really glad I bought some 5.1 speakers. Really helps with the immersion.

Get Me Coffee 08-04-04 10:01 AM

"THEY STOLE MY BABY" Freaked me out!

joeblow69 08-04-04 10:12 AM

anyone else a little disappointed in doom3 yet? I'm about 2 hours into it, and already I'm really tired of listening to all these boring audio logs.

jmj713 08-04-04 10:13 AM

Those with lower-end machines, don't worry. According to an article I'd read, it will run even on very old, low hardware. And it will even look good, too.

jmj713 08-04-04 10:14 AM

joeblow69, did you ever play System Shock or System Shock 2 for example?

Debaser 08-04-04 10:28 AM

Is the atmosphere like System Shock 1 or 2?

If it is more reason to drool over the game.

Are the monsters scarier than the monkey things?

I forgot what the name of the game was but there was a game for the Playstation(FPS) that had monsters that looked like the spider heads in 'The Thing' and at the time I was playing on a GXTV(small monitor designed for games so you have to sit real close to see everything).

You would see these heads sprout spider legs like in the movie and I'm crouching to avoid detection so I move real slow. You have to enter a room with maybe two or three of these creatures to get somewhere. One of them sees me and scurries toward me so far not a big deal but I'm moving slowly as hell. Then it leaps towards me and I literally jump out of my chair. I tried playing 5 more times but I was scared shitless. I couldn't take it cause fast moving bugs always creep me out.

Is Doom 3 anything like that?

Doom 3 has some bug/spider-like things that creep me out. They start coming out of the floor and from webs on the ceiling. I hate those things. You can hear all their legs clicking along the metal walkways. They like to leap as well. Freaky things.

I played both and thought they were excellent. The big difference is that the audio logs in SS and SS2 were actually interesting. It wasn't a chore to listen to them.

Crap man. Thanks for the warning.

I guess I'll pick up depends.

cartman 08-04-04 10:43 AM

Joe: After you click play to listen to an audio log, you can hit tab to close the PDA and keep on playing, and the log will continue to play as well. Makes them much easier to bear.

I think as gamers, we have everything to gain if makers makes games like these.

I agree. I really like Doom 3, but it would be great if all the new FPS I played were better than the last. I'm really hoping Half Life 2, Halo 2, and Stalker all turn out great.

I found that out an hour or so in as well. Makes it at least easier as all you're really listening for is a key code.

Is it possible to hook up my Onkyo HT to my computer to play Doom 3 in 5.1 audio?

CRyan 08-04-04 01:01 PM

Depends on what sound card you have. Do you have an optical out or 5.1 analog outputs?

New Catalyst Beta 4.9

This may help people with ATI cards for better performance, but try it at your own risk.

I haven't gotten to those guys yet, but I've seen pics of them. They are creepy. I'm sure they'll be even more creepy when I run into them in the game.

Did you notice the bloody footprints walking down the hall?

Get Me Coffee 08-04-04 03:28 PM

This website helped me http://www.omegadrivers.net/

I have a Dell 9100 and the drivers worked for shi t! Now my ATI Moblity 9700 is smokin'! I have it on High settings and it's running fine.

Ketamine 08-04-04 07:34 PM

Hear of anyone running it with only 256MEG RAM? My last desktop was bought when Half-life came out and was trying to wait until HL2 before I buy a new one. I do have a lap top P4 2.0 with GHz 256 RAM and wanted to know if I could get by with this for now. I know, I should just buy a new computer since HL2 is close but I really can't swing the money right now.

neiname 08-04-04 08:54 PM

Now I'm pissed, I finally picked it up today and teh 3rd disc is damaged... Arrrrggggg

Jeraden 08-04-04 09:04 PM

I was getting a lot of crashing. I upgraded to those beta 4.9 catalyst drivers and my crashes went away. The intelligent scan only gives me Medium quality. I think thats because I only have 512mb of RAM. I can play on the high quality setting ok though, just a little bit of stutter now and then. Its a pretty cool game so far.

Get Me Coffee 08-04-04 11:00 PM

I just reached
Spoiler:
Hell
and it sucks!! All your good guns are stripped from you!!

mljones99 08-04-04 11:31 PM

I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia and it runs pretty good on high quality on my machine. My computer is a Pentium 4 1.5 with 256 megs of RAM. Slows down a little when there is alot going on on the screen.

shaun3000 08-05-04 12:14 AM

Turning AA off helped my frame rates quite a bit.

trigun 08-05-04 12:19 AM

Surprised nobody's complained about the heavy handed scare tactic of not being able to use the flashlight and a weapon at the same time. You'd think marines protecting a poorly lit environment would have some weapons equipped with lights (or at least watched Jack Bauer use a pistol and flashlight in a few episodes of 24).

Debaser 08-05-04 12:42 AM

I don't know the story of Doom 3 so maybe this doesn't fit into the story but it would be cool if you could meet a NPC Raver whose still high on Excstasy and she lights the way with glow sticks twirling around as she can't stop dancing. It would be a great demo of a moving glowing light source.

According to the lead programmer, Robert Duffy, Doom 3 autoselects the detail setting based on your videocard memory. 64 MB gets low quality, while 128 MB gets medium quality and 256 MB gets high quality. Apparently, ultra quality is intended for cards with 512 MB or more.

ZakVTA 08-05-04 05:42 AM

What cards out there have 512MB? Is it referring to using Nvidia's SLI technology or Alienware's dual video card thing?

The Wildcat VP990 which goes for ~$600 has 512MB DDR, but it's designed as a hardcore high-end CAD product.

areacode212 08-05-04 07:54 AM

Are there any homages to the original DOOM? Like, say, old-school DOOM music, or recreations of E1M1?

I thought of this too. I'm rather underwhelmed by this game. The graphics are awesome, the sound is great, and the gameplay is from 1998. No secondary fire, few weapons, underpowered weapons (the shotgun feels like I'm firing a pump action BB), cheap scares, and the game is so damn dark. Why make such pretty graphics and then have you run around in the dark all the time?

As I've heard elsewhere - the Doom 3 engine is great; I can't wait for someone to make a game with it.

All the original monsters from Doom are back and they look cooler than ever.

djbrown 08-05-04 09:46 AM

Will my setup handle this game well?

Pentium4 2.53 GHz
512 MB RDRAM
64 MB GeForce TI 4200
48x CD ROM

I know very little on where my graphics card fits into the hierarchy of good vid cards, etc.. though I imagine the 64 MB is a bit on the low end.
