Anyone know if Target has the game on its shelves yet?

Capo2002 08-03-04 11:18 AM

I've been playing the game non-stop and I gotta say this is the best single player FPS ever!. It's not just the graphics and the engine that are outstanding, the sound, the atmostphere, and the story really carry the game to a new level. I'm on the ninth level I believe and I've been playing with the lights off the entire time and the sound cranked, and there's been time's where I've literally jumped out of my chair.

Mok 08-03-04 11:34 AM

This game is Awesome! I only played it for 30mins before work and wow wow wow! I can't wait to get home and play, it scared the crap out of me. I highly recommend it.

Get Me Coffee 08-03-04 11:39 AM

I'm well into the game today. It just gets creepier and creepier!!! The graphics are amazing! I'm not a big PC gamer...but my computer can handle so I was like what the hell I'll give it a try. I love using the keyboard and mouse. You have so much MORE control with aiming!

I just wish I could use both the flash light and gun at the same time. It's DARK down there!

danw 08-03-04 12:07 PM

I'll probably go buy the game later this week. I loved playing Doom 2 with my brothers; hopefully this will be just as good!

Was anybody else surprised at how low the system requirements were? Honestly, I was expecting much higher.

Bandoman 08-03-04 12:43 PM

I just got my copy today. I can't wait to get home and try it out.

i found the flashlight thing frustrating at first too, but then i discovered that if you toggle the flashlight on then hit the flashlight button again (i think its defaulted to be the F key) you go back to the last weapon you were using. this works especially well if you have a mouse with thumb buttons like i do. now instead of painstakingly scrolling through to find the flashlight, i switch back and forth without having to barely move my thumb.

Ok, now I am more envious than ever. Two questions:

Will it play on a AMD 2.0ghz with 512 of pc 2500 with an ATI 8500 pro (64mb)?

When is the XBOX version due out?

I am definately not in the market to upgrade the computer so if not I will wait for the XBOX release.

Bandoman 08-03-04 12:57 PM

I looked through the booklet and did not see reference to any control to quickly switch between 2 weapons/items. Does the F key work just for when you're holding the flashlight?

Your video card is pretty much one of the lowest supported cards, so you'll probably have to run it at low resolution and low details. So it will run, just won't be as pretty :)

There is no date for the Xbox version... some say it'll be done by the end of the year, others say it might slip to next year.

PaulDE01 08-03-04 01:15 PM

I just picked it up during my lunch break. My rig should run it OK at best.

P4 3 ghz
1 gig Corsiar 3500 XMS DDR Ram
Audigy 2
Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb - pretty pathetic.

Can't find the Nvidia 6800 Ultra GT anywhere though I am not surprised.

Mok 08-03-04 01:23 PM

My computer is only a 1.2 ghz(below minimum requirements) and I am shocked it runs pretty well on low settings. I did not have the money to upgrade so I thought I would give a shot and it worked. Now that is not saying I won't run into problems later on in the game, but what the hell the game is amazing.

neiname 08-03-04 01:28 PM

I just picked it up as well. Hopefully my rig will run it:

Thinking Machine laptop (686 prototype)
Artificial intelligence Risk chip
5GB Ram
GeForce3 Ti 200 32mb

What's my limiting factor?

the F key will bring out your flashlight, hitting the F key again will return you to whichever weapon was previously equipped.

Thanks birrman. That should come in handy.

EBGames has it listed to ship October 4th. I think I can wait until then. If it slips then I may have to pickup the PC version and a new videocard.

Get Me Coffee 08-03-04 01:47 PM

I just stop playing. My location right now is ALpha labs - Sector 4. I haven't had too much trouble with the ammo....just need to make my shots count.

Bandoman 08-03-04 02:17 PM

BTW - mine came with three discs, although it was a four-disc holder. I assume mine isn't missing a disc? Can anyone confirm?

Just the three discs. You're not missing anything.

Bandoman 08-03-04 02:31 PM

Thanks.

Weird, my Amazon preorder hasn't shipped and it says that it ships in 2-5 days now... What the hell? They should have tons of copies of this....

5GB of Ram -eek-
You're gonna need a better video card.

vhgong 08-03-04 06:23 PM

My EBgames still has not gotten it in yet. This is official, i will not pre-order it from shitty places like EBGames ever again. Die EB die!!!!!!

DVD Polizei 08-03-04 06:23 PM

Yeah, that's like putting Z-rated tires on a Ford Escort. :D

In any case, I won't be buying Doom 3 for a while. I'm gonna wait until there's a special or something. I've seen it online for $45. And it may go even lower or a Prima Guide might be bundled with it in a few months.

I currently only have a dual 1Ghz Mobo with 1GB RAM, and a BFG 5900XT OC video card, but I should do ok. A faster processor would be nice though.

vhgong,

I bet you get it from EB sooner than Amazon. Amazon sucks ass for pre-orders.

Bandoman 08-03-04 06:30 PM

It runs a little choppy/slow on my PC, but it looks cool. I've been killed a couple of times already.

Wierd. I got an automated voicemail that my $5 preorder of Doom 3 just came in yesterday. Too bad I can't buy it and play it cause my computer would blow up just by installing the darn thing. Looks like I'm at least 2 or 3 weeks before I can play it when I upgrade the old 'puter.

Is EBgames related to Gamestop? That's where I preordered it.

DVD Polizei 08-03-04 06:59 PM

Debaser,

You can always send it to me and I can break it in for you. :D

BigPete 08-03-04 07:44 PM

I'm playing on an Athlon 1700+, Geforce3Ti500, 768 mb of ram. It's working alright, I guess.

I probably would but I never picked it up. So ha! :)

Get Me Coffee 08-03-04 09:18 PM

For the ones playing it....

Where are you guys at? I just made it to the communications tower...

Debaser 08-03-04 09:27 PM

How many hours so far of enjoyment?

Get Me Coffee 08-03-04 09:29 PM

I would say about 6+ hours so far.

trigun 08-03-04 10:49 PM

I wasn't expecting a Street Fighter Alpha 3 joke in the game. Any other game parodies/tributes?

As the standard will be changed when Halo2 is released! :)

This game is indeed amazing! I wouldn't say ground breaking...it's still a FPS, but with the smooth graphics, creepy level design and interesting story ...it's one awesome game. It's a great horror shooter!

Honestly, i hope all games would set standards like that. If Halo 2 can set another gaming standard, i am all for it.
I think as gamers, we have everything to gain if makers makes games like these.

Been playing it for a bit today... so far so good. Great atmosphere, and of course the graphics are top notch. The aliasing is a bit more noticable then i thought they would be, especially after HardOCP's hardware guide said Anti-aliasing wasn't that important. The characters look great, especially their faces. Very detailed, except for some blocky heads. The game is VERY dark. It's incredibly hard to see enemies, and since you cant have a flashlight and gun on at the same time, its really easy for guys the get a jump on you. The sound is great... a lot of ambient sounds, screams, and voices. Glad i have 5.1 speakers on my PC.

So far the game runs well on my computer at 1024x768 at High Quality. A few dips here and there in frames, but nothing too dramatic. I'm ususally hovering around 40 frames most of the time, with some drops to the 20's and some rises to the 50's.

My system:
Mobile Athlon XP 2600 @ 2.33 ghz
1 gig RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro

Damn. I've got an overclocked 9700 pro, my XP 2100 running at 2.5ghz, and 512mb of ram and mine gets about 20fps constantly at 800x600 medium settings. I wonder if that extra 512 really helps? I was running other shit too, and I believe AA and AF were on, I should check it out again.
