One thing I'm wondering... if Madden doesn't drop its price... that this could backfire. Its a psychological thing... in the minds of a lot of people, $20 games are automatically inferior to $50 games (even if the quality of the $20 game is just as good).
I'll probably end up getting both now if ESPN is $20. I've been too used to and addicted to Madden's gameplay to change now.

I don't see how a high-budget title like this can recoup with such a low MSRP. The NFL and NFLPA licence fees alone must be very high. It's a great strategy to introduce new gamers to their line; it might work even better to syphon business away from EA's permiere franchise this year (as it did for me). I assume they did this because with Madden on Live, they probably figured to have a much smaller share of the market than last year, but again, I can't imagine they'll be making any money this way. We shall see, I suppose.

I'd buy Madden for PC but console is ESPN all the way. Can't beat Xbox Live, especially with the new league system this year.
Plus it's usually cheaper on PC, and the price drops fairly fast.

Currently, there is a promotion with Coca-Cola where you collect bottle caps with codes and then enter the codes online. I think with 10 codes you get a $10 certificate to use on ESPN games. So far I only have 1 but if this new price remains it looks like $10 ESPN titles for this summer!

Over at the OS forums, it looks like EA may be going to react to the price drop. They posted some sort of survey asking if a person would buy Madden for 29.99, so there's a slight chance that Madden will 29.99. Both NFL games for 50 bucks total. That will be a pretty good deal if it happens.

Something tells me that ESPN Football won't be eligible at that price. Then again, if all the 2k5 games are $20, maybe they will.

2005 ESPN NFL Football
You can use your $10 certificate on 2005 ESPN NFL Football beginning 9/9/2004.
But it also says on items $29.95 and more so they contradict themself.

This may be a great strategy. I don't have the numbers exactly but I'm pretty sure Madden is the only EA Sports game that Sega struggles to gain any market share against. If they sell only NFL cheap, they can win over some customers, possibly long term, and recoup some of the losses with full price on the other sports games. Besides, a home that buys your game and the competitions is better than one that buys just the competitions. I am not going to lie about my bias, I have been a VC fan ever since the Dreamcast days. The main reason I bought an Xbox was b/c at that time there was a lot of talk of Sega/VC partnering up with Microsoft. I had been the biggest EA Sports fan until I got my Dreamcast with the sports games. I'm hoping this will lure some people to at least give NFL 2k5 a try.
Personally, I'm hoping what everyone has been predicting for a while comes of this. I've heard that with system prices falling, the pressure would be on the video game producers to cut prices. Hopefully, we'll see an end to the $50 standard.

Longtime Madden player here, but for $20 I'll try ESPN.
