I agree on the controllable camera bit. I haven't played NG (other than in EB for like 5 minutes) but I much prefer games where you have total control over the camera, to one's that are static or can only be centered behind you.

I mean, the camera swinging behind my character with the right trigger is nice and all, but only for some situations - often I want to swing the camera around to the side so I can view my surroundings. Ugh - it's just bad... no way around it.

I know that I'm in the minority, but I play just fine with the camera. The game is not hard to me because of camera issues. The game is hard because it's hard. As a matter of fact, my only gripe about the game is that the actual levels are harder than the bosses.
It's one of the best cameras I've seen for a 3rd person hack n slash game.

I agree - using the right stick to control the camera doesn't really make sense for this game, while it does for games like Splinter Cell.
Ninja Gaiden is all about fast action - a frenzied ballet of death. If you're stopping and taking the time to adjust the camera with the right thumbstick, then you're breaking the whole flow. Between the right-trigger camera recentering and homing attacks (a+y is your friend), I had almost no issues with the camera system.
Once you get used to it, mopping the floor with half a dozen glowing teleporting demons in under 10 seconds becomes second nature, and one of the most fun bits of gaming I've had in recent memory.

As you say, you don't have time to fiddle with the camera, so you're stuck with either a static camera, which can be disorienting when all of a sudden the camera moves when you corss the room and you're walking the opposite direction from the way you were a second before.
Or you get something with limited control like NG, which is better, but still annoying as hell to some.

I say that to say this - I suck at video games. I've only been playing about a year and my hand-eye coordination just isn't up to par with most guys my own age(i'm 21), especially at college. I get torn up on any multiplayer game (except Rainbox Six 3 and Tiger Woods 2004, I can kick some tail there) and I can hardly ever beat a single player game all the way through. But when I saw the videos for Ninja Gaiden, I knew I had to play it, even though I heard how incredibly hard it was going to be. I pre-ordered it through EB with a great deal (trade-in any four non-sports xbox games and get Ninja Gaiden for $9.99)(the games I traded-in were really crappy games that a friend gave me). So, the day it comes out I pick up Ninja Gaiden and head home to play. Needless to say, I was slaughtered very early on and my bloodshed continued for days on end.
But you know what, I kept playing, and I got better and better, and I after about 28 hours of gameplay, I beat it. Most satisfying gaming experience of my life. Then I went through it a second time and flew through the sucker hardly ever being killed.
Now, if an unexperienced crappy gamer like me can beat Ninja Gaiden, and enjoy it, I'm sure just about anyone with any experience can get through it. The gameplay is just so addicting. And its not that the game is that hard or that the AI is cheap, it just takes some getting use to. Same thing with the camera. I hate hearing people whine about the camera. For this type of game the camera is as good as it can be, and like everything else with the game, the camera is part of mastering the game. Once you get use to it, the camera is great. As has been said many times, all you have to do is pull the right trigger to reset the camera. Anyway, that's just my two cents. If you don't like it, that's fine, and you're free to voice the issues that you have with the game, but don't complain about it.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. NG is obviously a very popular game for a reason. I will continue to disagree with you on the camera, but I totally agree with you that most anyone could get through this game if they were patient enough.

That would mean that you would have to get your fingers off the face buttons, which are the ones you attack with. They could have let you control the camera with the right analog stick and use the left and right triggers for the 2 slash attacks, but then where would your block/roll button be?

I don't think it would be difficult at all to block and take half a second to swing the camera around with the thumbstick and then attack. You would only need to adjust the camera a couple times during a fight. I mean, you're blocking anyway. Or at least - I am. And at times when you're not engaged in a fight and you have to shift your camera around you so you can see from the side what you're jumping towards - thumbstick camera controls would be a tremendous help.
I never really had a problem with games like Resident Evil where the camera doesn't move and you can't control it. I'm fine with that. But in games where the camera follows you and you can control it, it's almost essential that you get thumbstick control over it... this game even moreso since there are so many jumping puzzles. To its credit though, at alot of the jumping puzzles (not all of course), the camera automatically swings to a good spot for you. I'm not saying it's the worst camera ever - it's just one of my gripes and a minor frustration. Something that could've been improved on for sure IMO.

What jump are you missing in the lava pit?
