So how hard is it to mod an Xbox for Mame if I were to buy a second one at this price? What are the good sites, and has anyone done this? Am I going to need to crack it open?

Why do you need a second XBox to mod? Just mod the one you have right now.

On one forum I saw it mentioned that there is a 4/14 release date, but I find that HIGHLY suspect.

Hopefully the green system turns out to be real, so I can put it next to my tangerine N64 and my purple Gamecube. If only the rumors about the aqua Genesis had turned out to be true...

X-Box for $149.99 - $30 MIR @ FYE
FYE has a good deal on the X-Box this month. $149.99 - $30 MIR = $119.99 + Tax. I think that it's good through April 28th.
They also have All Star Baseball 2005 for $39.99 - $15 MIR.

Even with the mod chip turned off, Microsoft is now monitoring xbox's that have large or altered hard drives. It's only a matter of time before those get banned as well.
My brother is going to get me a new epprom so I can reflash my bios and I should be back on Live soon. If I get banned again, I will just get another xbox for that use only. With the price as low as it is now, I can justify having two. Now to find a av rack that can support the weight of both.

I bought one at FYE for the $119 after rebate price so I could have a Live machine separate from my modded one.
If you don't have an FYE near you, you can see if you have one of the other TransWorld Entertainment stores (Coconuts, Wherehouse, etc) near you. The rebate is good at all of their stores:
