Played the game for a few hours and there is alot I don't like about this game but strangely I keep playing it, dunno why.
Problems for me for online play only are:
1. I have the control sensitivity all the way to max except the Dead zone slider which I left untouched. It still doesn't feel right, meaning reaction time is still to slow for my liking. The controls aren't necessarily bad if they were just for a single player game. They are very slow though when going up against human opponents where every movement counts.
2. Alot of the multiplayer maps are to damn dark. I have had to put the games' brightness slider to it's max and turn up my brightness a little to even see anything besides my character and outlines of the enviroment.
3. The actual control layout is kinda annoying. L3 is default switch fire rate. I have a tendency to push the left analog stick down while moving and it changes the ROF on me. You can move it to select but that makes it even worse since L3 brings up player stats instead of ROF change.
4. I'm not sure on this one but if it's possible I haven't figured it out yet. It seems you can't type out a message while in game only talk or those taunts.
5. Also annoyed when I'm aiming right at someone pumping them with lead, at point blank range, and then me getting shot a couple of times and dying while the other person lives. That's a tad annoying. This is most likely my bad aiming though, it was strange at PBR though.

6. Apparently, at least for me, the Auto Join feature that scans for games to automatically dump you in, doesn't work. When I use it I get bumped off the network back to the single, multi main option screen.
7. The graphics are horribly aliased using component video wires. It's hard to see characters moving far away because of the shimmering that goes on.
8. This one isn't major but it's damn annoying. Everytime you want to go online there are a million different screens you have to go through and tons of loading just to even get connected to the lobby area. There's no reason it should be that cumbersome.
Most of this is probably just nit-picking to some people. I just happen to be anal about alot of things.

I'm still gonna play it, since I do want to like it, but some things just annoy the hell out of me. Hopefully BB will have the Sony usb headset tomorrow or Friday so I can actually talk.
I noticed teams can be unbalanced regarding the number of players on each side, which effectively ruins any enjoyment. Does the game have a auto balance system in place?

Please add me. I'm "Crotch-Rot".
Galanthas - I also noticed some of the same issues that you noted. The L3 fire-rate/stats is pretty friggin annoying. I was very happy to hear that they moved the fire-rate selector away from the L3, but what did they do? They put the friggin stats in it's place! And the controller's stick isn't concave like the Xbox, so I'm pressing down on it to find grip for my thumb, and everytime I go head to head against an enemy, the friggin stats come up and I die!
Also noticed the lag. I could shoot a good 10-rnds into a tango and he's still running around. I've watched my team mates empty an entire clip into a guy, watch the guy run around the corner, and then he'll fall down dead. Hopefully, Sony will tune the servers as time goes on.
And finally, you can't add friends unless they are also online with you at the same time. How stupid is that?
I still enjoy this game way more than RS3 though.

hmm, sounds like you didn't have the first game, as alot of these things were there also..anyhow, here's what i think about your notes..
1. haven't played with these yet on the new game, but i think once you get used to the movemnent you will adjust..
2. i agree the maps are too dark, but when i turn up the brighteness on the game, i can definately see a great improvement..i had to do this with the first game also and reported it to sony when i beta tested...
3. i had this problem last night also, and it was a huge problem on the first game, the fact that it's 2 clicks of L3 makes it better but not a sure fix...
4. no offense, but who wanst to type while they're playing? the game is made to be used with a mic, no doubt about it. i see it being an option for people like you who don't have a mic, but not something that i care too much about..
5. another problem from the first game, although it seems to take more hits to bring someone down now..easy fix is to go for head shots, practice will also make this less of an issue eventually..
6. i never use this, so i'm not sure..
7. i sorta know what you mean, but there are scopes on the guns that allow you to see those enemies far away, the game also has a progressive scan feature which could help..
8. agreed, but still nothing that bothers me too much..i have games that aren't online capable and have to go through the same amount of screens, so i'm used to that type of stuff..
give it time, it might grow on you, and the mic will definately make the game more fun..i must admit that i have no other console, so i have nothing to compare this game to, but i for one, thinks it's alot of fun..
my major gripe so far is the fact that it takes 3000 kb right off the bat to save anything..i had to take a half hour just to back up some things to my sharkport, this and Jak 2 are making me buy a new memory card, aghhh!!!
for the guy looking for a router, i use a wireless linksys (wired to the ps2) and the thing works great with everything i own (2 wireless laptops, pc, ps2, and replaytv)..i got the router and wireless card combo for about $100 at best buy, so i'd definately suggest that..

Nope, didn't own the first Socom. Mainly because I don't really like the analog aiming control when against human opponents. Couldn't stop myself from buying this one since I needed another online game to justify the PS2 adapter purchase.

I'll get somewhat use it to eventually but I don't see the akwardness going away completely.

You shouldn't have to set the games brightness to max and fiddle with your TV's brightness to see players in the distance and objects in the enviroments.
3. i had this problem last night also, and it was a huge problem on the first game, the fact that it's 2 clicks of L3 makes it better but not a sure fix...
It's not just two clicks unless my controller is broken. I was holding L3 down to switch between the RoF modes.
4. no offense, but who wanst to type while they're playing? the game is made to be used with a mic, no doubt about it. i see it being an option for people like you who don't have a mic, but not something that i care too much about..
No offense taken heh, I don't have the mic yet(waiting on BB to get it in) so I felt real lonely last night not being able to talk/type while playing, like I usually do on PC games.(not comparing pc to console games, just the in game chat functions)
5. another problem from the first game, although it seems to take more hits to bring someone down now..easy fix is to go for head shots, practice will also make this less of an issue eventually..
Hard to go for headshots when it's hard deciphering player from enviroment with the shimmer and aliasing that is going on(for me at least), but I would imagine it will become less of an issue later with more practice.
6. i never use this, so i'm not sure..
7. i sorta know what you mean, but there are scopes on the guns that allow you to see those enemies far away, the game also has a progressive scan feature which could help..
You shouldn't have to go into scope mode to see players in the distance. I'm not talking players across the map either. You shouldn't have to have Progressive scan to see. Component works fine in all the other games I have and I would imagine alot of people don't even have component as an option.
8. agreed, but still nothing that bothers me too much..i have games that aren't online capable and have to go through the same amount of screens, so i'm used to that type of stuff..
None of my games on the PS2 makes you jump through this many loading screens or login screens except maybe Drakan and GTA's first load. Load times usually don't bother me, it's just that there is to many loading screens in this one, IMO of course.

I plan on giving it alot of time. I do want to like it and hopefully the problems I have will eventually go away. But at the same time it did give a bad first impression and I normally would stop playing but the game compels me to continue playing.

The L3 fire-rate... you either double-click or hold L3 down to change fire-rate. I find myself unintentionally holding down the L3 during the heat of battle. I'll have to work on thumb control.

Is the Logitech headset compatible with SOCOM 2? I have played a few games and I can't get voice to work at all. I turned the radio on and nothing. Can anyone help?

deadlax - When you press the "O" button, do you hear a beep in your headset? This is an indication that your mic is on. When you release the button, you'll hear another beep.
However, I was in a server last nite where the voice comm just stopped working for everyone. We were in the lobby, voice comm just died and people were typing instead. It didn't work at all thru that game. Next game, everything was back to normal.

Played a little more earlier. Did a little better, my kill/death ratio was better than 50% in a couple of games. I still hate the aiming though. Also the player models for terrorists and seals are way to similar so I keep getting killed since I couldn't tell in time if they were friendly or not(I know crosshairs turn red on enemy, not always point straight at someone).
Picked up the official headset at BB as well. It seems to work fine, at least the listening part, I haven't said a word yet heh. Maps are still annoying being so dark but I have set my TV to max picture and brightness while playing to fix it a little.
The game would be loads more fun if I could use a mouse.

Gal, it's definitely not a perfect game. I actually prefer Ghost Recon and the Xbox controller (better analogue stick positioning) but the run and gun is fun. Try something like Ghost Recon online and you may do better and have more fun.

Don't have/want an Xbox and I don't think my PC will run the newest ones since I have a crappy vid card at the moment. If it's similar to the original Rainbow Six I wouldn't like it, that one was a tad slow gameplay wise for my tastes.
*edit:Just noticed that Ghost Recon:Jungle Storm is being released on the PS2 and will be online. I'll give it a rent when it releases to check it out

I think the more you play SOCOM (2), the more you'll like it. It's actually pretty damn addicting.
