I don't mind.

Seriously, though. You can be less volitile with your posts. People are apt to listen to you if you don't come off so abrasive.

lets just hope all the next generation consoles will have 1080i, DTS or DD5.1, a built-in hard drive, and goOD GAMES

With the exception of the good games, I can almost guarantee that this will happen.

No kidding. No need to be so defensive over video game companies, especially when the one your defending has sold 50 million+ more than the competition.

Bingo. The DC failed because sega had very few fans left. They screwed over their fans 3 times in a row with the Sega CD, 32x and Saturn, leaving many not wanting to take a chance on another Sega system.

Which as you said, was complicated by Sony's dominance with the PS1.

its worth noting, that Sega only really botched Saturn here in the USA... in japan the system released over 1100 games and some of them are very very good. If you like 2d shooters or 2d fighters at ALL, the saturn is the system to have. It has over 50 of each. Radiant Silvergun and Soukyugurentai alone are worth the price of admission.

Wow, you really need to get up with the times. The Cell has been confirmed to be in the PS3. That article was proven false. Try visiting a real PS3 website like:

http://www.ps3insider.com

There they actually show you were Sony has said the Cell will be in the PS3. God, one misquote in one article and you deny every other thing that has been said about the issue.

How is PS3INSIDER.COM a "real" PS3 website? Looks like a fansite. Do you write for it? I saw that article there and it was written by a "Josh". The source in the article was just a generic link to bloomberg.com as well.

All I've seen is articles saying that it won't be in the PS3, and they were verified AFAIK, although I never spoke with Ken myself.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the more passionate members of the forum as well as respect their opinions even though i don't always agree.

I guess my point is that Sega had a more devoted fan base. Sega could turn out those quirky SEGA games like Panzer Dragon, Space Channel 5, that maracas game and fans would eat it up. They also were always closely tied to the Sonic franchise. Of course they lagged behind Nintendo, but to a lesser extent they had product identity and loyalty
Sony on the other hand has no "typical" profile, no signature character, weak first party line and therefor as I said, not as devoted a fan base. What they did have was millions of installed users and lots of third party support. That said, their launch was pretty weak with very few must-have titles or well known franchises. Really all there was on that front was Madden 2001 and Tekken Tag Team. Still, they managed to create a "hype" frenzy around Christmas time and the rest, as they say, is history

I think there is a distinction to be made between the kind of "devotion" we are talking about. Sega does indeed have some devoted followers who cant wait for the next SC5/Seaman/JSRF-style game, there is no question about that. Unfortunately this group of devoted individuals isn't large enough to make Sega a leader in the console-making world. Nintendo can survive by making consoles that are rarely the most powerful... and dont have the best 3rd party support etc simply because the people who like Nintendos first party stuff are numerous enough to literally carry a console. Sony, on the other hand, has a different kind of following. Most agree that their 1st party stuff isnt exactly the cream of the crop. What sony DOES do well however is promote consoles and woo good 3rd parties. This is Sonys strong suit, and over the last 6-7 years, they have been the best in the business at the business of selling consoles. Because Sony can do this, they have devoted supporters who will buy their consoles. These devotes dont expect any 1st party games from sony to be great... if they get a few, then its a bonus... but its not expected and that doesnt matter so long as Sony is able to sign all the good 3rd partys that can be had.

at any rate, there seems to be many types of devotion... and its a very hard thing to measure/guage. Worse still, especially if you're a console maker, game player style devotion can be nearly as fleeting as a fad... just when it seems that one developer/company is going to just keep on rolling, someone comes and knocks them off their perch.. stealing all the old company's "devoted" followers while they fly by...

am i the only one who thinks that we won't have to wait until late 2005 or 2006 for the next generation of consoles to be released?

i think x-mas 2004 is entirely possible... but 2005 is more likely.

No, I don't work there That is where I get my PS3 news from and find them very reliable. They keep away from the bull that clutters most fan websites.

I really wish Sony (or whoever) would do this with their Cell chip.

Come on, a hundred times faster than a P4 2.4, In a box (seemingly) smaller than a VCR at a price that millions of parents all over the world can afford during christmas time? We would be talking about a revolution not only in gaming but in the entire tech industry.

I may eat my words but I seriously doubt it.

well, they did say the PS2s emotion engine would rival intels chips in power etc. safe to say that didnt happen. Intel/AMD spend millions and millions and millions to stay on top of the consumer-grade processor world... that kind of investment pretty much means that you prolly wont get bushwacked by some technology that is both cheaper and 100x as powerful as what you are working on. All of this sounds like nothing more than EE II-style hype.

I don't think we'll see any new systems until late summer/fall 2005.

Sony has no reason to be in a rush, MS has said "when the PS2 launches we'll be their with the X-box 2" so they don't seem to be planning to jump the gun. And I'd be shocked if Nintendo came out with something first.

Actually the way they are talking recently it seems like they are going to pull another Dreamcast. Something about revealing something big next year at E3.

Actually back when the PS2 came out it did outdo the Pentium in terms of 3D performance and rendering. You can't directly compare the two through benchmarks because the architecture is so different. There are some good but very technical articles online if you want to read about them. Kind of interesting actually (if you're a EE like me). The author even says that PS2-like architectures are the way PC's will probably evolve eventually.
