Sony is a hype machine. Accept it. It's only going to get worse.

I remember owning my DC and reading Sony's press releases seriously wondering if buying a DC was the right choice. Yes they even got to me. (No more!) Sony is a hype machine, say it with me...

Specs this far before launch do nothing for me.

Hype or fact......I'll need to see it run something next gen before I go running down the street praising the PS3.

Ummm... Coming out a year early didn't hurt Sony too much, did it? What killed the DC was the fact that it used basically 1.5 generation technology, not next generation. Sega probably had a larger "fan base" than Sony. What they didn't have was many good third-party games to expand that fanbase. I also think not having a DVD player hurt them more than you'd think, especially in '99 and 2000 when DVD players weren't cheap and in everyone's house yet. It also didn't hurt that the PS2 was backward-compatable. Sega was also way aheard of the curve in regards to online gaming, though

I remember developers saying how difficult the PS2 was to program for, and look where that got Sony.

Yeah programming for the PS2 is basically a training exercise for what the PS3 will offer. Distributed computing is the way to go when it comes to getting massive amounts of data moving around and number crunching.

i am always super weary of hype like "100x a p4 at 2.5Ghz" or whatever. IBM can obviously make very high end stuff... but AFAIK, they havent released a super powerfull consumer grade/priced cpu that has been able to topple Intel (or amd for that matter). They do help Apple make stuff... and maybe if these puters werent hamped by apple they might actually be worth something... but i dont see their processors taking over the entire pc world either. at any rate, the next gen systems will undoubtably be great, hype or not.

So this is weird. IBM did the chipset for the Gamecube. Now they are doing this with Sony. I wonder what that says about the next gen chipset for the new Nintendo system. They may get another company to develop it for them.

Maybe AMD?

Personally I am more interested in my PS2 games being able to be played on it and what games will be coming out for the PS3. If the games look good again i will buy the PS3 close to launch.

meh, Ive never seen anything on ps2 that blows the dc out of the water with respect to graphics firepower. If DC is "1.5", so is ps2... especially compared to xbox.

Sega probably had a larger "fan base" than Sony.
wha? any "fan base" advantage that sega had over sony whithered away with the fumbled launch of the sega saturn. By the time dc/ps2 were in the game, sony had a HUGE advantage thanks to PS1s total domination of that gen of consoles.

What they didn't have was many good third-party games to expand that fanbase.
well, we agree here...

in japan probably (ps2 is the best selling dvd player in japan), in the us? probably not much of a factor.

Sega was also way aheard of the curve in regards to online gaming, though [/B]
true dat.

Looks like this article is a little dated -- one year to be exact.

I doubt it will be much of a factor. Nintendo has already stated the GPU will be done by ATI again, I think it's likely they will work with IBM again.

Nintendo and MS would take a year jump start for one reason: PS2. The year start Sony got killed both of them and I'm sure they would love to return the favor. Problem is Sony will not let anyone get a jump on them. Its not going to happen. I would imagine the PS3 is pretty far along in the developement stage whether it uses this chip or not.

For those of you weary of Sony's announcements trying generate hype, Nintendo has announced they will be doing something next year!! Nobody know what it is and it's a surprise. And it's going to be, uh, something. Maybe this is the "bombshell" announcement for 6 months ago that never happened.

Fact of the matter is that everyone releases press statements to try and get the public hyped. Everyone who was talking smack about the PSP announcement can't say that this Nintendo announcement is any better. The analysts were unimpressed.....

MOD EDIT: Please do not bash other consoles. There's no need to call the X-Box a Crap-Box. Please read this thread for more details. -namja

I second that emotion! (pun intended). Why do all the threads about console X turn into a defense for console X or a console X sucks thread? I know I'm guilty of the same thing but it's hard not to get defensive or offensive when you disagree.

Back on topic, Cell is a joint venture between Toshiba, IBM and Sony so the next Nintendo chip could very well still come from IBM. I have an friend here in Austin who was working on Cell for IBM. Haven't talked to him in a while though....

That article is so old. Here are some more current ones.

Oh yeah, and PS3 WON'T have the cell chip. It's old news... PS4 is what it will be in.

Look at the paragraph directly to the right of the Lessons Learned box.

There are tons more sources for this and it's been verified by Ken Kutaragi.

the last two articles are only quoting the first one you posted. Either way, it is interesting as this is the first I heard of cell not being in the PS3. At this late point in the development of the new consoles, how can they find a suitable replacment chip that will compete with whatever M$ and Intel will put out. I finally see why people have speculated that the PS3 could be out in 2006 instead of 2005. Thanks for the article, good read.

Wow, you really need to get up with the times. The Cell has been confirmed to be in the PS3. That article was proven false. Try visiting a real PS3 website like:

http://www.ps3insider.com

There they actually show you were Sony has said the Cell will be in the PS3. God, one misquote in one article and you deny every other thing that has been said about the issue.
