Doom III - Leaked

Here are some links with info on the Alpha version of Doom III.

Site 1
Site 2

I haven't tried it yet. I have heard that is runs very slow (12 fps) without tweaking the config files.

It's not a demo, it's an illegal leak of a very early build of the game.

I know that, but "demo" has far fewer letters.

I think this is the same version that was showed at E3.

I figured you knew that, but I wanted to emphasize that it was an illegal leak, and shouldn't be downloaded.. 'course that's just my opinion

This is the same type of thing that happened back when Q3 was being developed. The IHV test got leaked and that is what happened here also. As it was leaked by a video card company (supposedly) then this is probably an alpha form of the game to test video drivers and what not as well as performance. I messed around with it a bit, looks good, but runs damn_slow right now...

Why am I having so many problems finding it on the Newsgroup mentioned? I only found part 8 and 10 posted over and over.

Actually - alot of them are text files rather than compressed files. Should I be concerned?

You have to download some donkey program for this one... and a few people have suggested it might not be real.

Click on this link or copy the URL and enter into the address bar and wait... You also might want to try a download tool that allows you to resume, cuz my first attempt cut me off.

HOLY CRAP! I'm sh***ing my pants! This game is hella creepy. I'm running at default resolution and it still looks fantastic. It's really choppy - it's smooth when I'm just moving around, but when I fire, it chops. Anyway - it's amazing. This is most definitely playable and it's 3 maps. The second like I posted above is where I got it - you have to wait for about a half hour before the download starts... nevermind about using a download tool - won't work. Once the download starts, it's really quick.

Here's my system spec... if yours is much lower, don't expect this to run.

Athlon XP 2100
512MB PC3000 DDR Ram
GeForce 4 ti4400

I've read that it's run on a 1ghz machine or better with about that much ram and at least a GeForce 4 or ATI 9700. You can try if your card is only one generation removed. Since this is an alpha, it's going to run choppy and slow on even the fastest machines... it's still playable though. Once the final product is out, it'll probably run smooth like milk on mine.

Thanks for alerting me to this edstein.

This will probably push id to release a demo soon.

Oh yeah - anybody know how to change the key config?

Ok, first off the posts are probably yEnc coded. So you'll need a dedicated news reader like Newsbin Pro or Agent to be able to get the files and actually use them. I actually got it from alt.binaries.games and it was in 20 .rar files. Download them all, extract the Doom_III folder from the rar file and startup the game...there is even a .txt file in the folder to tell you how to start the map (as using the menu will only result in a crash).

OH, and to change the key configurations, look in the main folder (base folder, I can't remember) and look for the doomconfig.cfg or something like that...it should have all the key binds in there and loads on default.

Here is a link to slashdot board with a lot of tips to help get it setup right.

I think I will wait for the beta. Trigger, how about posting some screen shots.

Instructions for playing Doom 3 demo:

1. Unrar (duh)

2. In your Doom_III\base directory, open the runact.cfg file.

3. Comment out the last line. In other words, add the "#" sign in front of the string "devmap $e3_intro" so it looks like the following:

#devmap $e3_intro

4. Launch the game using the main exe.

5. Press the tilde key to bring down the console (just like Q3)

6. Type the following: exec runact.cfg

7. Hit enter, and then go grab a soda. Seriously, it takes about 5 mins to load all the crap.

8. Once it is done, you can launch the intro movie, or play yourself.

9. From the console, use the following commands:
map e3/intro (Loads intro movie)
map e3/e3_1 (Loads first map)
map e3/e3_2 (Loads second map)
map e3/e3_3 (Loads third map)
map fred/e3bathroom5 (won't work for some people)

Changing controls:
From the console, type: bindlist

This will list all the currently bound keys and their functions. Use the page up and page down keys to scroll through the list. The controls for standard movement are not bound to the regular WASD config, so type the following to put it back to normal:
bind w _forward
bind s _back
bind a _moveleft
bind d _moveright
Check out some of the other bindings, God mode and give health are already bound for you

Checking FPS: type com_drawfps 1
third person veiw - pm_thirdperson 1

other commands to play with http://folk.uio.no/magnusn/doom3/cvarlist.txt

Okay - I've got it up on Kazaa... I changed the name so it wouldn't get hammered... do a search for "dogfarts" and you should find it.
