Re: 2025 Emmy Awards Discussion

The biggest surprise of the night was learning Nate Bergatze has $250,000 to donate to charity.

He's an extremely successful stand-up comic. And he's good at it too. Some of his specials are great. But whatever skills he may possess, they don't include hosting.

I liked is "George Washington" opening and everything that came after was terrible. The jokes weren't funny, but the main problem was, his timing sucked.

The next time someone hires him to host, maybe they should try his own charity idea. Every time the audience does not laugh they start deducting from his salary.

Awful, awful show.

Not only was the Boys and Girls Club countdown stunt tacky, but they spent too much screen time on it. They're basically scolding the award winners while presenters like Jennifer Coolidge stand up there and stammer for five minutes, they sing the theme from a forty year old tv show, and even eat up a lot of time commenting on that stupid countdown.

I was amused to see The Bear get completely shut out.

And Bargatze earned a spot in the Worst Hosts Hall of Fame. Yikes, that was bad.

There was a really weird bit where Nate came out in a "Canadian Tuxedo" and introduced Sydney Sweeney. He seemed genuinely confused about why he was wearing it. I assume (?) it was a "great jeans" joke about her 'controversial' ad campaign, but maybe it was cut? In any case it was strange and awkward.

Edit : Apparently it was a sly, subtle joke?

The whole show was strange and awkward.

Everybody involved, from Bargatze to the presenters, seemed uncomfortable and off. I wonder if, after what happened last week, the producers did a shit-ton of rewriting at the last minute and nobody had time to rehearse. It's almost like they were reading it from teleprompters or cue cards blind.

Yeah, I'm a fan of Bargatze, but aside from a few funny elements on the opening sketch, the Emmy appearance wasn't good. Hosting a show like this is either not his thing or there were mitigating circumstances behind the scenes we don't know about that made it more challenging than it should have been. Either way, I doubt he gets another hosting gig for anything.

I'm a fan too, but this was a bit rough around the edges. It probably didn't help that he did shows in Colorado on Friday and Saturday instead of you know, rehearsing.

Thing is, his humor is about being awkward, weird, slow development, self deprecating, etc. He doesn't really tell jokes and he doesn't deliver punchlines. I thought that his hosting was very true to his brand of humor, it's just that his brand of humor is TERRIBLE for an awards show host.

Oh I agree, I'm a fan of his standup and yes, his hosting gig was very true to his style of humor. But for the majority of the audience who aren't familiar with his standup, I'm sure a lot of them were "What the hell is this?"

Oh, totally! My GF was one of them, lol. And I always thought he was a strange pick, and when he started I was like "ooh, this is pretty cringey", but then realized that he was just doing his normal stuff, and it was cringey because host of the Emmy Awards is not a good vehicle for his shtick.

Never seen him before and this was my response. Just neverending thoughts on "why is he so unfunny and who thought he'd make a good host?"

I only knew him from instragram clips, especially his George Washington, which I think is hilarious, but I've seen some clips from his standup I liked, too. For the Emmys he was just the wrong kind of comedian.

Wonder how Steven Wright would have been as a host back in the day.

Sam Kinison would have killed hosting the Emmys, Oscars, or Grammys.

His standup is great, I think, but never in a million years would I watch his standup and say "Nate Bargatze would be a great awards show host!"

He's popular with audiences across political divides. He's generally well-known, but not for anything controversial. He can be trusted not to do anything to cause trouble. He is still "on the rise" enough to be willing to host the Emmys.

I don't know that Wright was ever famous enough to host the Emmys, and if there was a time when he was, the Emmys were still watched by enough people to eliminate him from contention.

They never would have let Kinison near an Emmy show, even as a presenter.

Re: 2025 Emmy Awards Discussion

Hey, the Television Academy just announced their first new award in almost 20 years :

Television Academy Announces Plans for First New Major Award in Nearly 20 Years

Legacy Award Will Recognize Television Programs of 'Profound and Lasting Impact'

The Television Academy today announced the creation of the Legacy Award, which will be presented to television programs that have made a “profound and lasting impact” on audiences and remain relevant to society, culture and the industry.

The Academy last introduced an award of this significance with its Television Academy Honors Award in 2007, recognizing programming that drives positive social change.

Candidates for the Legacy Award shall be selected annually by the Governors Award committee (to be renamed the Special Awards Committee) and presented to the Board of Governors for a vote. Entries may be made by members of the Board of Governors, the Special Awards Committee or individuals who may suggest recipients in a letter to the Television Academy.

As with the Governors Award, engraved Emmy statuettes will be bestowed upon the recipients of the Legacy Award.

“The Legacy Award celebrates groundbreaking programming — programs that have stood the test of time delivering stories that continue to engage audiences and featuring iconic and timeless characters with multigenerational appeal,” said Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “The award allows the Academy to honor more of television’s rich history and acknowledge the storytellers whose work has resonated with viewers and continues to entertain legions of fans around the globe.”

Legacy Award criteria highlights:
  • A minimum of 60 episodes aired across a minimum of five seasons.
  • Continued or sustained relevance, influence or inspiration:
    • To a genre of television.
    • To an existing or new audience.
    • To society and culture.
  • Franchise properties must be considered as a whole and awarded as such.
  • Award may only be bestowed on a program once.
The award may be presented during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies, the Emmy telecast, Televerse or the Hall of Fame ceremony.
__________
I assume it has to be still airing during the eligibility period. Stranger Things will NOT be eligible because though it ran 5 seasons, it didn't have 60 episodes. Game of Thromes WILL be eligible since it will have either one or two series in the franchise airing during the eligibility period and they would all be considered Game of Thrones for this award.
