I mean popularity doesn't mean that you'll like something just because it's popular. CSI is not at all popular on this board, like most network dramas revolving around police or lawyers or whatever, but they get ratings from a certain demographic. I liked Friends fine but I probably don't like it as much in hindsight... and the other two are basically railed on in this very thread (ie: Chuck Lorre productions... I do like his after credits cards though)

I hear ya. I'm not big into what the general public seems to enjoy when it comes to entertainment and pop culture, in particular reality tv, America's Got Talent (does it?), Masked Singer, etc., and the shows you mention as well. Just couldn't care less about them. Some people really get off on them, though. More power to them. It doesn't interest me in the least. To each their own, I suppose.

I understand the sentiment that 1 hour procedural dramas for many are predictable and unsatisfying. I get that. No one likes the same things. But, for me it's all about the characters. As long as you write good and memorable characters, it makes following their stories fun.

Gil Grissom who is played by William Petersen on CSI is probably one of the most iconic characters on network TV in the last 20+ years. Same goes with Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson on the Law and Order series. They have been around for almost 25 years.

The last good sitcom was the original Night Court.

Arrested Development, Parks And Recreation, The Office, 30 Rock and the other shows like them were not funny. Smug is not funny.

That's perfectly fine. You don't have to like what's popular. Nothing wrong with that. It was just a weirdly worded statement so I was wondering if it was CSI in particular, crime procedurals, or popular TV shows that you didn't like.

What I don't like is people being contrarian just because being different makes them feel special. Not liking a popular thing solely because it's popular. I can't stand contrarians.

During Seinfeld's original run, I wasn't watching much TV, so I never saw it. But two of the guys in my office watched it religiously, and the next morning at work they would talk about that week's episode, and I would laugh so hard I almost cried just listening to them talk about it. Years later, I watched some of those episodes in reruns and realized that it was much funnier listening to Boris and Tim talk about Seinfeld than it was actually watching Seinfeld.

I had to look it up to get the exact dates, Night Court ran from 1984 to 92. Do you mean everything after 1984 was trash or after '92 (for instance, Cheers and Married with Children outlasted it). Even so, man I'm not sure I've heard anyone say that; you didn't like any sitcom after that time?

Damn near every drama (or comedy-turned-drama) being 45+ minutes per episode is just shameless padding. Most should be a tight 25-30 minutes instead.

The Cowboy Bebop live action was an acceptable remake, was entertaining, and deserved a second season to flesh out the rest of its ideas.

Based on the first few pages of this thread, I guess genuinely enjoying Twin Peaks: The Return is unpopular :lol: It’s got more FWWM vibes with even less fan service. I dug it.

Better Call Saul season one was terrible, but every subsequent season built the series up to be more satisfying than Breaking Bad by the time the finale came about.

I watched a sitcom on Paramount + (with ads) and the run time was listed as 19min. I felt ripped off. :(
