They must expect big things...dumping the show into a mid-July slot. SyFy product the past few years have had a nasty habit of falling face flat their second seasons. Can't wait to find out what radical changes they've made.

Looks like The Ark season 1 is back on Peacock. I have a few episodes left to finish from it. Probably getting it back up before season 2.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

I finished bingeing season 1 on peacock over the last week. I like the characters and there's always a fair amount of action, so it's an easy watch and entertaining enough as a melodrama.

The science is really, really terrible and I almost gave up on it after the first couple of episodes because of that, but I've just accepted now that the science will continue to be stupid. So very stupid.

The other thing that really bugs me is how... unprofessional, I guess, the ship's inhabitants are. They're in this crisis state and they complain about rations and steal drugs from the clinic to hold a rave? And they blame the crew for everything that is clearly beyond their control? And these people are supposed to represent the cream of the crop of humanity, specially chosen to populate a distant world? Man, we're fucked as a species if the best of us act like these people do. I am reminded of the truly terrible sci-fi show "Another Life" starring Katee Sackhoff that also showed a spaceship's crew just acting like complete idiots at the first sign of a crisis. This show is at least better than that one, IMO.

Regarding some of the characters:

Garnet - I like that while she's got some enhanced abilities because of her DNA alteration, she's not supergirl or anything, still mostly human. I have to believe that her clone twin will make an appearance at some point, having jumped on one of the other ARK ships.
Lane - one of the more complex characters. I disliked him at first, then he started to win me over, then he mutinied and I disliked him again, then he redeemed himself.
Brice - gotta have a brash, handsome rogue, I guess. The disease he had was more of a plot device than characterization.
Alicia - very annoying at times, but also kinda cute. She's the stereotypical "genius" character who spouts technobabble, but at least in this case she's not flawless and makes mistakes sometimes. I've noticed the character generally speaks with an American accent, but you can often hear the actress slip into a vaguely British accent.
Angus - a likeable character, but his "aww, shucks" personality can be annoying
Eva - I like her, she's competent and loyal and smart. And, wow, really beautiful.
Trust - I wish I could say he's a caricature of a egomaniacal oligarch, but today he seems all too believable.
Maddox - kind of a cartoonish villain, even down to her wardrobe. If she had a mustache, she'd be twirling it. The actress seems like a Walmart-brand version of the great Shohreh Aghdashloo.

I guess season 2 will be airing in a few weeks. Despite my criticisms, I did enjoy the show as mindless entertainment, along the same level as Stargate: Atlantis or Defiance, so I'll keep tuning in.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

Talk about a show that seems to have had no press leading up to Season 2's first episode. I just watched the episode on Peacock and at least one major character was basically written off the show (but I bet will not be all that missed by anyone who watched the first season), but so far so good.

Phantom, I think you might be wrong about the quality of the show cratering compared to season 1 (especially if like Cellar Door, you just accept that the science will be bad but still enjoy the character interactions on the show), but you were right that it feels like it was quietly dumped on the schedule in the middle of summer. I am going to google and try to find/catch up on some articles about this show (I found some links with posts about the show a few weeks back, hoping to find more now that the show has started up again).

ETA: At least the Syfy Channel, as one would hope, has a lot of posts up on this show, and After The Ark videos are back!

(spoilering just in case, but nothing here beyond season 2 episode 1)
Spoiler:
Yeah, that was a quick exit for that character (we're talking about "Cat" right?). The actress has become a regular on the CBS show FBI: International, so I wonder if she had scheduling conflicts between the two shows.

Ah ha, Cellar Door, that seems to explain why she left the show. If you watch the 4th episode via the Syfy app, you might agree with me and a lot of the shows fans that this is the best episode yet.

^I liked episode 4 a lot, too. Some of it felt very Trekky.

Oops, I was mistaken and I was actually referring to episode 3 there.

But I've just watched episode 4 and I thought it was very good and also kind of Trek-ish.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

This has been a very solid second season. It's the type of reliable, meat-and-potatoes sci-fi we don't get anymore from episodic television. The cast has grown on me, even the British actress playing the nerdy computer expert whose American accent comes and goes with each scene.

I like how it seems each season has been completely plotted out in advance, they aren't winging it from episode to episode. I was surprised by the recent death.

Hoping it gets more seasons, though we are nearing the point where they will have to address reaching their destination. Doubt the crew will find a home at this planet.

So glad this thread got bumped, as this season is actually pretty darn good. Fingers really are crossed that we get another season.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

I ended up stopping the first season after a few episodes and waiting until the end of the season to binge it all. I watched the first episode of this season and decided it would be better to wait until the season end and do the binge thing again. I like this show quite a bit, but It works better for me that way.

^I'm enjoying watching it week to week. It gives me something to look forward to.

Very good season so far. I like the GSA vs EF tensions.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

Good season, though the season finale fell a bit flat for me. Seemed like they only had 20-30 minutes worth of story they needed to pad out a full episode.

I won't spoil anything but the season finale sets up which cast members are disposable for a third season. Of course the worst actress in the cast makes the cut, while 2 of the more interesting characters are sidelined likely indefinitely except for guest appearances. I did find it funny how several of the actors with only bit parts at best (security woman #3) look like they'll be major cast next season.

Looks like they decided romance will be on the backburner next season as they split up all the couples.

It was a weird season finale. I was kind of thinking it didn't get renewed, but in the last few minutes, they set up that cliffhanger. So who knows.

As showrunner you'd set up a cheaper budget possibility for the network and producers when they're considering renewing or not. That's why they set up that final coda at the end where half the cast gets stuck on the planet off screen.

I think there's a good chance we get 2 more seasons. Cast starts getting expensive once you move past a season 4 on most cable productions.

I wouldn't assume that the characters left behind on the planet are going to be sidelined. The show could run parallel storylines, one following Ark 1 and one following the characters on Trappist. Or the writers could contrive a reason for the gang to all get back together, like maybe they have to abandon Trappist for some reason or Ark 1 has to return to Trappist and stay to help defend it against some threat.

What I want to know is when is Ian going to stop walking around looking like some homeless guy?

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

How much of the cast returns will depend on the budget. If ratings are decent, they'll keep most of the crew. If not, I expect several cast members will see if they can get a better gig.

Trask is the character I think we might lose early next season.

Re: The Ark (SyFy) -- From EP Dean Devlin -- Premieres 2/1/23

I just read on TVLine that The Ark has been renewed for a third season!

As folks are well aware I have posted a lot in this thread because this show quickly became a favorite that I loved to watch. No news on any cast reductions, but for now I will just be content that we are getting a third season of a surprisingly fun show to watch.

The actress who plays the doctor in this show has a small part in the new season of White Lotus on HBO MAX.

Glad to hear this has been renewed!

The last episode of season 2 aired in early October. Took 5 months to officially announce the renewal. Obviously this means it likely won't premiere until 2026.

Excellent news! I've really enjoyed the first two seasons, which is a rarity these days. So many shows lose the plot in its second season.
