Re: The Conners (ABC) - Season 5 Thread

Thanks for the tip. I sampled 1-2 episodes from each season and what an improvement! The colors are fantastic. But the eyes do look a bit wonky from time to time in scenes that aren't close up. I can't believe "The Conners" will be coming to end next month. And that it's been nearly a year since the last season. It's such a same they are doing only 6 episodes. It just feels so incomplete. They could have/should have done at least 12-16.

Actually, that sounds like just about right to wrap up everything. Season 6 was only 13 episodes. Honestly, I kinda forgot to even watch the last four episodes and finally caught them on Hulu. It's time. It was a brilliant turn to rework the show once Roseanne trumped herself off of the return.

No, I agree it's time to end. But 6 episodes feels like such a whimper.

Six gives them enough time to wrap up already-going storylines, without having to create too many placeholder new ones just to fill time.

Maybe Jerry Garcia will return from his gig on the fishing boat in Alaska

Yeah, too many shows stretch that final season with a lot of excess "wrapping up" crap. Like did I really need to see Sam Malone check in to rehab for sex addiction and reveal that he wears a toupee?

I thought the finale was fine.

Unless I missed it they didn’t acknowledge DJ, other than him being in one of the clips in the montage at the end. I read they weren’t contractually allowed to show Roseanne in any of the clips.

I agree, it was a good ending. I even had my eyes well up at the very end when everyone was telling Dan goodbye while he sat on the couch. The part about Jackie rejoining the police force is a stretch tho. Isn't she in her 70's on the show?

Nice ending. Very moving. I can think of only one other series finale where most of the cast were openly crying like that. It's a shame they couldn't bring Fishman back even for this one episode. Just feels odd they completely erased his character. Not even a mention.

Re: The Conners (ABC) - Season 5 Thread

I thought the whole last 6 episodes were pretty underwhelming. The wrap up of Darlene and Becky storylines felt very uninspired. So Becky has issues with commingling finances and managing money and Darlene still can't communicate well with anyone she sleeps with. Check and check! I would have rather seen more effort shown into their family relationships instead of just tossing off a few old dated clips from 30 years ago.

Agree that DJ should have at least popped in. I wasn't expecting Estelle Getty because her final episode was pretty near perfect. I hope her character is still out there being a hobo but chances are her dead body is lying unclaimed in some morgue with no ID.

I respect the choice to NOT award them any money. It was such an obvious red herring through these 6 episodes leading to the finale that they were due a big settlement for her death which would set Dan for life as a millionaire and change the family's lives forever. Of course they couldn't do that given the fan backlash to Roseanne winning the lottery in the first go around.

Ending up at the cemetery was great. The individual goodbyes to her grave were the only part of the show I wanted to see. But the moment was kind of ruined by Harris giving her grandmother a kiss off and just walking away. It would have been nice to see Mark's version but his goodbye with Darlene was spot on for any parent like Darlene who can't let their kid go live his own life.

Looking back The Connors was really NOTHING like the original Roseanne show. They really just took the characters and setting and built a different show and vibe around it. The Connors was never as good as Roseanne but it was fun watching where these old characters ended up. So credit given to Sara Gilbert for taking the reins and giving us 6 more years. I hope now she made enough money to retire as an actress. Id be happy not seeing her dour face on TV again.

Yeah, I agree. What an underwhelming final season. This was the best they could do? So many uninspired storylines. Ben being pulled away that long to open up an office for a hardware magazine....seriously!? Jackie becoming a cop again was a fun idea but completely unrealistic. It could have been a desk job at the very least. I never bought Becky being with Tyler. There was just zero chemistry there. I'm glad Dan didn't hit the jackpot with his settlement. That would have been too close to the Connors winning the lottery. I'm also glad we only got to see Beverly Rose once this short season. But as you mentioned, "The Connors" was nothing like "Roseanne". How could it be? I think I laughed a handful of times watching "The Connors". But it made me smile, and I enjoyed being with these characters again. "Roseanne" is one of my all time favorite shows (except for that dreadful final season, and the subpar season 8). It was relatable, hilarious, daring, and topical. I loved the reboot with Roseanne. And so sorry she ended it's run with those unfortunate tweets. Can you imagine how great this show could have been had she still be on it?

That last season she did (before she got the boot thanks to her racist tweets) wasn't all that great for her, Most of the time she sat there looking out of it and reading off of her cue cards mostly. I doubt she would have gotten any better to last. She should have went to a funny farm, rather than back to her Macadamia one.

First, she's never been a great actress. Just great on the show. And I didn't find her performance that last season bad at all. It might have been a little stiff, but she hadn't done anything like that in a while. She was funny though, thanks to the scripts and talent that revived the show.

I just finished the series finale. While I can't dispute any of the negative comments posted above, I admit I did enjoy this final season well enough. It wrapped everything up well enough for me. It was time.

Estelle Parsons judges you.

Best keep your eye out for Bonnie & Clyde.
