George Wendt, who bellied up to the bar to portray the beer-quaffing everyman Norm Peterson for all 11 seasons of the fabled NBC sitcom Cheers, has died. He was 76.
Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home, his family confirmed early Tuesday morning.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” a rep for Wendt said in a statement. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

One of my favorite lines from cheers:
Sam: "What's happening Norm?"
Norm: "It's a dog eat dog world Sammy, and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear"

If this isn't a poetic coincidence. Wendt died on the same day Cheers ended 32 years ago.

Ratzenberger's a couple years older and looks like he could drop of a heart attack at anytime as he's gotten huge.

That sucks. 2025 just keeps kicking us in the face.
Memorable playing against type as killers in a Masters of Horror ep and 90's COLUMBO he starred in. I also liked him in the 80's cult classic HOUSE which I really need to revisit.

One of my most used Cheers lines I use in everyday life comes from Mr. Peterson. It's in the episode where Sam, Carla, and Norm take Robin Colcord's boat out to race. They find a bomb on board, meant for Colcord. They try radioing for help, but it doesn't work. Sam starts lightly tapping on the front of the radio wondering why it's not working. Suddenly the entire guts of the radio just falls on the ground. Norm points at it and says, ever so helpfully, "There's your problem right there, Sammy"
RIP, Normie.

Sad news. Cheers is on of my Top 3 sitcoms ever. It’s sad the sitcom stars I grew up with are starting to die off. First Kirstie Alley and now Wendt.

RIP. I grew watching NBC's powerful Thursday Night lineup at the time. Including Cheers and the Cosby Show.

I am honestly surprised he lived as long as he did. I only vaguely remember watching some Cheers as a kid. I am sure it would be a lot funnier now as an adult.

Last year, I watched all of Cheers and then Frasier for the first time as an adult and I loved them both!

Weird fact. The Final episode of Cheers air on this day in 1993. I'll always remember what got me hooked on Cheers was in reruns. I watched some episodes when it originally aired but one summer one of our local stations aired reruns late night on Sunday from 11pm-12am and then Monday through Friday 1030-1130. I fell in love with Cheers through those reruns. RIP George Wendt. He always seemed like such a kind and good man in everything he did.

I think Wendt is one of those actors that always seemed older than they were. He was only 34 when Cheers premiered. I was just a kid during Cheers’ run but I would have thought he was in his 40s or 50s.
