Re: Star Trek: Picard (S2 E04) "Watcher" - 3/24/22

I thought this was another solid episode. Definitely laughed at the STIV reference/cameo and I also caught the Dixon Hill reference.

I still don’t understand the “commercial breaks” that occur throughout the episodes - really weird.

I liked the Guinan and Chris scenes. I hope he encounters that ICE guy again. I was expecting Chris to turn the stun gun on him and break out.

I figure it’s a good sign if the episode finished and I want to know what happens next immediately.

Too far to think Agnis will become Borg?

I read somewhere that all the new streaming Trek shows like to “cut to commercial” because it’s the way they shot the older shows. It’s unnecessary now, I’m not sure why they still do it.

Im tempted to think Agnes will be the next Borg queen.

Yup, would make sense that was Agnes in the first episode as the Borg queen (calls him Picard and not Locutus too)

I stopped short of suggesting she was the new Queen, because that sounded too extreme, but looks like I’m not the only one.

I continue to be creeped out by Annie Wersching as the Queen. Would be hilarious if she told Agnes she needed a new pair of legs. I actually assumed she’d lift them from Elmore.

Paramount+ runs ads during the show if you have the lower cost subscription. So shows on P+ are made to have commercial breaks. I guess they could just cut to commercials between random scenes, but most of the original stuff I've seen on P+ has obvious places where the commercials would go (since I have ad free). Is Halo the same way?

I forgot P+ has a commercial tier. Does Halo and their other originals have “cut to commercial” edits? I suppose they do, I just never really looked for it. I wouldn’t pay for the commercial tier, when my $10yr subscription runs out in a couple of months I’ll just subscribe on and off like everyone else and binge what I want. P+ still has so little worthwhile content for me I don’t think that would take more than a month.

This thread convinced me to jump into Picard Season 2 and just by-pass season 1. I started with the first 2nd season episode this past weekend and am all caught up. Really enjoying the show and I was almost hoping the cute Dr. who helps out immigrants would pull a Catherine Hicks from Start Trek IV and say surprise as she hugs someone being transported back to the ship. Also loving how they have integrated the Borg Queen into the show.

Re: Star Trek: Picard (S2 E04) "Watcher" - 3/24/22

I finally watched this tonight. It decent, but I kind of cringed at the callback to Star Trek IV with the punk rock dude. That IMO was so poorly executed. And 38 years later, the odds of him still being some Mohawk 1980s punk rocker But other than that it was mostly entertaining.

Star Trek 4 definitely exists in Picard's world including this version of 2024 before things get screwed up. Picard made reference to Kirk and his crew in the 1st episode doing time travel multiple times. I guess the records of the event and bringing back Spock were part of Starfleet's history and records.

I did like the younger actress who played Guinan.

I did notice how they shot the chase sequence with the LAPD and Raffi/7 and avoided to show images of the then Staples Center, which is now Crypto.com Arena. They kinda blurred the background and used long shots. Probably had to do that once the sponsorship changed when the episodes went into post to avoid conflicts.

So finally catching up, I’ll need to find the other episode threads but for now I’ll say this is a massive improvement over the first season.
It’s got all the right callbacks and the dialogue, especially between Raffi and Seven, is just so much better.
I loved seeing the bus punk again, for those who don’t know, he was Nimoy’s assistant for years and he even directs other things (he did the recent Muppets Halloween special). It was really cool to see him.

I also got Gary Seven vibes, I really hope they run with that.

And I gotta say “I’m not the worst driver here” was an amazing line. Wish she had mentioned learning to drive from Tom Paris.

what’s the Gary 7 connection? I vaguely remember that TOS episode. Wasn’t the Enterprise stuck in the past near a USAF base?

Is worst drive a Voyager reference? I bailed on that part way through so don’t know all the nuances.

Re: Star Trek: Picard (S2 E04) "Watcher" - 3/24/22

Gary 7 was an alien observer on Earth during the 60s and the episode Assignment:Earth had Kirk and Co travel back in time to observe a rocket launch. The two parties interact, hijinks ensued, yadda yadda. It was supposed to be a backdoor pilot for a new series.

On Voyager, Tom Paris was an aficionado of old cars, driving them on the holodeck and such. The implication is that Seven apparently learned how to drive from him.

I was on the site Gizmodo, and it appears there is a cute Easter Egg in the episode. You can call Q's number and get berated by him for a few moments. I have not called, but I did listen to the video recording and it made me laugh. I am really enjoying this season of Picard, and I say that as someone who skipped Season 1 and for the most part I have been told that it is not necessary to catch up to enjoy this season. With the exception of Discovery, which I have no interest in catching up on, I am a fan of the all these Paramount + Star Trek shows (both live action and animated).

Doh, posted in the wrong thread. Also, I would have noticed that Bando already had a post up on this Easter Egg if I was paying better attention, lol.
